Do you take Gruden at $50m over 10 years?

So Gruden has studied some new offenses which makes me think the evil genius might be designing his own type of hybrid offense...Could be interesting...The part about his wife not wanting him to get back into coaching is a bit glaring tho.

Why isn't there more talk about Butch Davis? I understand the issues at UNC, but he's proven to be able to build programs, has a defensive background, was named as UM coach to rebuild reputation in addition to W-L record, and should be able to recruit in the Carolinas.

Well knowing Gruden is a serious long shot I am on the Butch Davis bandwagon...I would have no problem with him coming to UT...He would certainly build a winner here.

That's apparently what Basillo is reporting. I don't care how inaccurate Basillo is, it's an interesting question.

10 years is a long time to be committed to paying out 5/yr

I personally would be a fan of a longer contract, assuming the coach was a proven commodity like Gruden. I'd love a contract that would essentially make Tennessee fans shut-up and swallow what happens the next 5-7 years with the same head coach so we can finally have some stability.

We are what's called "all-in" at this point. You can't win unless you go "all-in". Either disaster occurs, or you win the whole damn thing.

Yes: You take Gruden and Co for 90-100 million over the next decade. Remember that over that time the AD budget will exceed one BILLION. So in percentage terms one could argue it actually might be a deal.

If one concludes that over the next decade Gruden could get us to 3-4 SECCG with a couple of titles and 4-5 major bowls (BCS caliber or similar) how is not worth it?

I understand.

I will just say this. Gruden is a good coach. He's not god's gift to coaching and has not been in the college game for over 20 years.

Just because he has a cool nickname, is likeable and is great on tv does not make him the best candidate.

I think if Tennessee is willing to shell out this kind of money, they can do better

I think he may be god's gift to Tennessee though.

We have to have a national recruiter as coach. Sometimes I'm amazed at what Fulmer did while here. I think Gruden instantly raises the bar higher.

He just has the POW, the SHAZAM, the BOOMSHAKALAKA which is needed in the modern game, and especially needed at Tennessee.

He could be an average coach, and still be elite. He will bring elite talent to Tennessee, and that is 80% of the battle. If he can coach a lick, he will have us back in the hunt and in the mix almost instantly.

And dem gators gone be scurred.

I can guarantee you that Shanahan or Belichick have 100% control on who they draft or sign.

Shanahan doesn't have 100% control. He bartered 100% control between him and the GM. Snyder doesn't have the control he used to... he was convinced into relinquishing it.

Belichick does have the most control of any NFL HFC AFAIK as Kraft 100% trusts him.

It really does come down to the individual team. Some owners make decisions and relinquish others to their GM, some owners appoint themselves as the GM, some give full control to GM, some give partial to GM and partial to the coach but give themselves veto/override authority, etc etc etc.

TB's problems were more Ownership/GM than they were Gruden.

AFAIK the total pricetag was $100m over 10 years. From what Basilio was saying half was to Gruden and half was for his staff.

Here's some perspective:

Alabama's total staff salary was $4,130,000 for all assistants and $5,316,667 for Saban. That is $9.44m/year. That's pretty much the price of a top-flight coaching staff. Clemson's staff (not including HFC) is $4.2mil. LSU's is $3.8mil.

In the end if an additional $10mil over those 10 years makes the difference with just one win a year... that's a big difference between a BCS bowl and a non-BCS bowl. So, Gruden wants $5mil for his staff? Let him have it. That dude could probably put together a rockstar staff for $5mil between 9 assistants.

I know LSU's staff salary will be over $4mil as Chavis' salary will go up by a minimum of $200k.

Length of contract doesn't really matter to the coach, all about the buyout to get out of it. 10 years is a nightmare of a commitment for an unproven college coaching commodity. I want Gruden badly but that is a very difficult contract to sign IMO.

To me it really boils down to if the Tennessee Brass wants to win or not. Do they want to become a brand and bring in money and talent like they did in the 90's. If they do they will pay it and it will be chump change in the long run.

Look at BAMA. They went from mediocrity to a national brand again in 1 year.

If they want to take another chance on a coach that hasn't proven anything then we will start bleeding money as a program. Tennessee has one of the greatest fan-bases in all of football. We are not quitters and we DO NOT deserve to be taken for granted.

I'm not saying don't negotiate but let the man know we are serious about this football team. If he is interested we should be negotiating with his agent right now.

Alabama fans got really timid when Saban was signed for the (at the time) largest NCAA coaching contract in history. People balked at the length terms as well as the salary.

That's just where NCAA contracts, and specifically CFB, contracts are going.

If all of this is true ... and that is a big "if". It sounds like Gruden is putting together a dream team of a coaching staff. They could possibly dominate not only the SEC but also the NCAA for years and years to come. They could make there money back 10 fold. Could anyone say Dynasty.

It was right after he got fired from an NFL job. Does she have family around here?

basilio show today tb states that you do not give gruden what he is asking for. I disagree, program is at a serious crossroads. Either pay up and get program back in upper echelon or pay less and make a slow climb up. Gruden has potential to get back to upper echelon quickly based solely on name in recruiting

Oh I think if that's what it takes, you do it because we are circling the drain right now honestly. I still don't like the numbers though. I think Gruden is the closest thing to a home run hire as there is. Immediate publicity and national interest spikes the moment he is hired.

I think people need to take a step back, breathe a little, and ask when gruden became god's gift to coaching.

Tennessee needs to get the best coach they can, not the coolest name out there

I think you as well as all the opposing fans want anyone besides Gruden to come to UT. Weather he is the best coach out there or not you all know he would take 25 of the best players in the country at minimum the next 3 years. When you have 25 1st round draft picks every year you don't have to be the best coach in the game. Every coach in the SEC is rooting for ANYONE besides Gruden to land the UT job!

While Gruden would be a great hire, I would expect Hart & company to consider all options before going 90 million dollars into hoping Gruden can win here.

Gruden & Staff wants 90 million for 10 years.

Patterson & Petersen & Staff would have to tell me NO at maybe 44 million for 6 years.

It is documented that she has family in the Knoxville area.
That could be a huge factor in the decision. IF he has that fire back and needs to coach, it is almost all consuming in the NFL and heck even close to that in college. This might be the best situation for his family all the way around.

I would love to have Gruden, but at this point in UT's Program, I'm afraid we may have to settle for a coach that doesn't command such a high salary and notoriety.
We may all indeed be dissappointed, but that said, it still may take a coach as Gruden to pull the Vols from the ashes of the SEC to being relevent once again. Some folks just don't realize just how far down the Vols have fallen.
Go Vols

The last year or two has also showed that Gruden enjoys finding and trying to help build new talent. That is exactly what this team is needing right now. Finding talent is easy ... getting them to sign and being prepared to coach them to their full potential is the hard part.
