Do you trust Heupel ?

Maybe you should find a new team to root for because they aren’t firing Heupel anytime soon.
Losing season next year and anything is possible. Quit wanting to settle for mediocrity. The Vols deserve a coach who wants to win.

Coach Heupel is our best chance to beat ga and Bama next year. Thanks to Pruitt we have less scholarships. Now is not the time to be firing head coaches. I believe we should make adjustments on Defense, but nothing drastic

You would want the coach fired two years removed from an 11-2 season?
Coach Ed Orgeron was fired two seasons after winning an NC. College football is a "What have you have you done recently?" type of business. For the blue blood programs, NC's and playoffs should be the only measuring mark for job security and raises. I know the powers that be has let the Vols fall on hard times, but the program is still one of the big programs of college football.

Next year, the playoffs has been expanded to 12 teams. Let's see if a smart coach like Heupel can figure out a way to better his lot in life and be the 12th playoff team.

And Heupel doesn’t want to win? Is that your position?
Of course he wants to win. I question, "how dedicated is he to winning?" Now that he is a paid man, is he just content with winning at least 7 or 8 games and making a bowl game every year to keep the boosters happy?

He seems like a highly competitive person, as most coaches are. Not to mention, he’s early in his career. My guess is there’s a 0% chance that’s he’s content with 7-8 wins a year.

Edit: Also, no way are our boosters good with 7-8 wins a year in the long run either. We had a hellluva hole to dig out of so that’s why 8+ wins is ok for now.

That's simply a bizarre take. An 11-2 season followed by 8-4 after losing an NFL caliber QB and you say we're settling for mediocrity in year 3? Were you even a fan during our long walk in the desert for 15 years? We're damn lucky to have Heup and a lot of teams would be glad to take him off our hands.

Depends on each person’s standard. Mine will always be high. Last yrs SC game still concerns me even though team over achieved. Some concern this yr as well. I think Hype has the potential. Needs to upgrade some players, upgrade with a couple assistance coaches, better discipline (penalties). With playoff expanding their is a better shot. I’ve been conditioned to believe it when I see it.

That’s not a very fair comparison. Coach O took over an established program recruiting at an elite level from Miles and they waited until he had dropped to .500 two years in a row before firing him. Heupel took over a depleted roster and program in shambles. It’s not an exaggeration that most people thought they wouldn’t sniff a bowl appearance, let alone what happened last year, anytime soon. They were something like 20 players short of a full roster when he got here and we still haven’t had the opportunity yet to see how they do with a full roster of players they recruited and developed. Oh and they’re also basically missing a full recruiting class of depth. Yet despite all of that he’s managed to win 26 games in 3 seasons and here we are discussing why they “only won 8 games” this year. I fully understand that college football is a “what have you done for me lately” business but IMO he should at least be afforded the opportunity to play with a full deck before being kicked to the curb so we can return to our favorite pastime of discussing who to hire next.

CJH isn't going anywhere anytime soon. A lot of people have quickly forgotten about the 3-7 train wreck that this program was just a few years ago. The way people talk on here you would think that this program had competed for conference and national championships every year of its existence. Meanwhile, we haven't won the East Division since 2007 and haven't won the SEC Championship since 1998. The kids on this roster weren't even born the last time Tennessee won anything even remotely close to important. Yes, UT is a storied program with a rich, long history. It's also a program with a storied, rich, long period of absolute mediocrity. Does CJH have some glaring issues he needs to fix? Yes. Heupel is going to have to figure out how to evaluate and recruit the best up and coming assistant coaches. To me, this is the largest difference in coaches like Saban, and others, who are consistently successful. Being able to fill the void with great coaching talent when a coach on your staff leaves is going to make or break his time in Knoxville. It was painfully obvious this year just how much Alex Golesh meant to the offense. If coaches like Martinez are the best option he has and he can't, or won't, upgrade position coaches, then prepare yourself for continued mediocrity.

I’m proud of the boys and the season they’ve had. It’s not what anyone wanted or hoped for at the beginning, but the realistic posters on here called 7-5 to 9-3. Vols were not far from 10-2, IMO. Only 2 games they were not in by midway through second half were Georgia and Missouri, both of which are Top 10. If I could have one back, it would be Florida game. But thats water under the bridge now. They aren’t going bowling and the Vols have a chance to play in a nice bowl, which helps the youngsters with practice and helps the coaches, as well. I hope CJH does some work in the off-season with his coaches and the portal, and I believe he will do everything he can. He has the support, the facilities, the budget. And he has the drive. To insinuate that he is good with mediocrity at this point is ludicrous. I’m excited to see what the future holds and will support the Big Orange regardless.

That ain't exactly giving him a ringing endorsement, bud. Comparing him to Dooley, Butch, & Cornbread isn't exactly a high standard to meet. And, yes, I'm excluding Lane bc Lane has proven to be a significantly better coach than Heupel at this point.
Wasn't looking to give him a ringing endorsement since he still has work to do getting this program back to championship caliber where we all want it to be.

How is Lane significantly better than Huepel? Exactly what has he accomplished

The only thing I'm not sure about at this point is what he plans to do to fix the defense. It's clear that Banks and Martiniez have to go if we're gonna take a step in the right direction. I'm still not convinced he will do what's needed there.

You can’t say this for certain though because we had a different QB, different WRs and a different OL. Those are pretty large variables outside of the Golesh departure. My guess is the personnel changes were more responsible for the offensive deterioration than Golesh leaving. Of course there’s no way to tell for sure. I’m just saying you can’t point to just Golesh leaving as why we took a step back. Too many other variables changed as well.

That’s not really a fair statement. You could easily argue for 10-2 or 11-1 before the season started. We should’ve beaten Florida and before the season started we pretty much all assumed a win against Mizzou. Flip those 2 games and a prediction of 10-2 was certainly realistic. If we’re healthy all year maybe we even get there. 11-1 would be if you also predicted a win over Bama, who we beat last year and who had an unsettled QB situation. When reality came and we played the game we certainly had a shot in that one. Predictions of a win over UGA were the only “unrealistic” ones I saw. Then again, who defines what’s realistic? You define it as 7-5 to 9-3. I’d say anything 7-5 to 11-1. You could even maybe argue 6-6 as we were a few plays from being 6-6. We were closer to 6-6 than 10-2 actually.
