I saw this and got curious. TVA claims that although the feds originally paid for their set up, they are now self-funded from the rates they charge.TVA was a vote purchasing scheme that FDR ran that subsidized the South at the expense of the rest of the country. You might see reduced rates on your bill but everyone else has to pay for it. Churning money doesn’t equal savings or efficiency.
No expert on the TVA but I don’t think they pay taxes and have some monopoly and other protections that private entities don’t have.I saw this and got curious. TVA claims that although the feds originally paid for their set up, they are now self-funded from the rates they charge.

I don't know about federal taxes, but they make PILOT payments on various things in TN.No expert on the TVA but I don’t think they pay taxes and have some monopoly and other protections that private entities don’t have.
I think it depends and is regional. In Texas the “grid” is managed by a nonprofit called ERCOT and they oversee the generation and transmission producers which are owned by private companies, municipal utilities, rural co-ops, etc … so yes there is some level of competition to the extent allowed by the manager, ERCOTI don't know about federal taxes, but they make PILOT payments on various things in TN.
Edit: Do other power producers compete with each other? I've never really looked into it.
That's the way it's been since the days of the Roman Empire.Probably not a good example. I live in Shelby County where the government is failing. Services are drying up but tax collection remains robust. The roads are in sh!t shape (as expected) with ever increasing revenues.
It seems as if you’re saying that if the government didn’t build roads then there would be no roads.
