Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

I haven't read the whole thread, but the first person I thought of was..

th

He's a much better athlete than Eddie George. George was a powerful, yet slow plodding 3 yds and a cloud of dust guy. Jalen has great size like Eddie, but he has elite speed, 4.37 speed and great burst. George had neither.

George's senior season he had 2000 yds. If Hurd is close to the player George was, we'll be very fortunate.

I would like to see the arguments some of these guys have with their wives/girlfriend . But but does one or two inches really make that much difference ? Sorry I codnt help myself.:D

WAT?

That's a bit premature.

No. Didn't say better football player or running back.....said better athlete.

Eddie never had the burst, quickness or top end speed that Jalen has right now, and it's not close. What's to be determined is will his football career be superior to Eddie's.

1927( to be exact) of his career 3768 his senior year. I didn't make the comment that Hurd is a better football player/RB than George, just that he's already a better athlete. Eddie was a slower, powerful, at times plodding RB who at times was hard to tackle (other times it looked pretty simple) with decent speed. Jalen is a sub 4.4 guy with great quicks and elite top end speed... that's what I based my "he's a better athlete" comment on.

I agree 100% that if we get a 1900 yard season out of Hurd at any point we will be incredibly fortunate.

FYI 6:45 mark of the YouTube video in this thread shows Hurd running away from Josh Malone(2 runs). Very impressive because Malone is vey fast.

Two things - I know a former Vol who has seen Hurd play and he is very excited about him. "The real thing" is how he put it. Secondly, you think the UT coaches might have a better idea than us posters as to where they want to play him? I mean, I know sooo much more than guys who have devoted their lives to coaching football. I should be more than qualified to tell them when I think they're doing things wrong.

Good point you're bringing up....it was funny to read posts on here marvelling at the possibility that a 5 star WR would be slightly faster than a 5 star RB

If he can run over the LB, CB and Safeties like he does in his highlight video then I think he'd be a great addition to the team. The reason UT hasn't looked good for the past few years is that we haven't had a dominant down hill runner with breakaway speed that hurts the defense. Think this kid might just be that and can you imagine him in space against a LB or safety.

The argument is not about helping Auburn. It's about whether or not a tall RB, Jacobs, was/is an effective running back....which he has been.
I think the kid is a stud but I am not concerned with how he projects to the NFL.

We agree there 100%. Just have a bunch of guys, as evidenced by the title of this thread, wanting to say he's too tall to be a tailback which I think is wrong. Like you said...kids a stud.

I had the opportunity to play runningback in the big time. I have also worked with kids before I got out of football. Although he is tall, in college, a runningback of his stature is dominating as long as they play with leverage. He shows great leg strides, vision and plays with an attitude. He plays a little high, but with real coaching that will be corrected in spring at UT.Although,he may not be great in the nfl, at the collegiate level, should he play runningback, he has the potential to be a heisman hopeful. Brandon Jacobs by the way is 6'4. Eddie is 6'4. I have had the pleasure of meeting both of those men at different times in my playing days.

Adrian is 6'2. Eric 6'2, Herschel 6'1, chuck muncey 6'3. Marcus Allen 6'2. Fred Taylor 6'1...

Also remember coming out of highschool your height is listed a little taller and weight fluctuates depending. My guess is he is 6'2-6'3. He has massive legs and in college when u have legs like that it is very hard to be stopped. So I do believe he will be the next great back to step on our field where Our blood and sweat and tears was laid upon. Don't worry about height, worry about the attitude, and leverage.

But wait, but wait....this is a different time, a different game and I'm afraid that although all the other players are a lot bigger that if we have a big running back he'll run too high, get hit a lot more and harder and will get his knee blown out just like Marcus Lattimore. Move Jalen to OLB, to TE, to safety..... For the love of Pete, anywhere but RB!!

Funny but that's not what Jamal Lewis is saying who happens to evaluate kids in high school. He stated that RB's like Hurd will be the future of football because of their height. But of course you naysayers know what you're talking about and of course Jamal doesn't.

Dude, I have been advocating that Jalen's height is a non issue since damn near the day he committed back in March. You might read a page or 2 back in the thread for context. We're on the same page.

ESPN has him listed at 6-4. I'm trying to think of an elite tailback who was that tall and I'm drawing a blank. I'm not saying that an elite 6-4 tailback is outside the realm of possibility, but I definitely think there's a reason the average height of running backs in the NFL is 5-9; namely, a lower center of gravity allows for quicker changes in direction, which is something running backs have to do.

The tallest elite running back I can come up with is Eric Dickerson, who is 6-3. So it isn't impossible, but he's definitely the exception. And he was also just a uniquely talented player.

Am I overthinking this? Is Hurd definitely going to be a stud?

I'm late to the party. What did I miss. This should be good
