Dooley Wants Safeties at 215#+

So why are people arguing over one thing that Dooley said? This is one of the dumbest threads ever.......... 215 lb Linebackers are for the birds. Forget Chavis style defenders. I'm glad we are getting bigger on defense.

More like impatient with the utter lack of comprehension some of you are showing. The fact that some of you accuse me of twisting this stuff into something other than what it is is actually pretty humorous considering the responses I am getting.

Hey, I'm sorry. You must be a really cool guy since you are the "giver of sexy" so please accept my apology

Surely you jest. I'd much rather have Savion Frazier over a Dont'a Hightower or Brandon Spikes

What about guys like Raynoch Thompson and Kevin Burnett? Tennessee has had some good smallish linebackers. Hell weren't Burnett and Simon both in the 215 to 225 range at UT?

Living in the past I see. We need larger LBs. Let the small guys go to Mid-major schools unless they're just can't miss prospects. I don't care for a small team anymore. Look at South Carolina and Bama compared to us. They were so much bigger than us to the point that they just engulfed us at the line of scrimmage.

Pretty obvious Dooley feels this way too.

Simon was over 230 by the time he left. He was also barely 5'11. Burnett was probably about 225.

Raynoch was rare. Heard him saying that one of the reasons he hit so hard was because he was so small compared to other LBs. He said he knew he was going to be the hammer or the nail so he tried to always be the hammer.

I love the idea of having a guy with the smarts of Wilcox using some big and strong and fast players...

This is what I've been saying. When Wilcox gets his type players we are going to be a force on D. Think about what we've done this year with the talent that we have. Reveiz and Thompson making multiple Int's. Lathers on several big blitz's and the DB's relied upon heavily but we just don't have the talent. Imagine what we'll look like when we have 270 lb DE's, 300+ DT's, 250 lb LB's, 200 lb CB's, and 205-215 lb S's. Not only do they all have size but they have great speed and athleticism. A very big and athletic Defense...

All the Bammer safeties are around 205-215

You do realize this is the first time he has played football in like 7 years. Once he continues to learn the system, he will be a good one for us. Coaches love his athleticism.

Coach Fulmer is that you??? You usually say "working like heck he has great athleticism"

I'm sure Dooley would discriminate against them simply because of their weight. Never should have joined this argument and I'm leaving it. Hate on the guy all you want but if you actually care about UT football you better hope he can get the job done.

Tino is a CB here. We have 3 committed and are still looking at Orta and Marcus.

OK. :hi:

So we have 3 safety commits, right? Loften, Randolph, & Martin.

We have 2 CB commits: Thomas & Coleman.

And yet our top 2 DB targets are safeties: Orta & Marcus.

Looks like the coaches want to recruit 4 safeties & 2 CBs. It would give them the flexibility to move Waggner & maybe Janzen Jackson to CB next year.

Or am I reading too much into this?

Kevin Burnett was listed at 238 in his draft profile. He came here as a big safety and took a while to build up to his ideal playing weight at LB.

He's playing at ~245 right now.

One thing should also be noted:

While we were, on average, undersized a bit at LB... we were not, in our glory years, undersized at DT/DE. When Haynesworth and Henderson were here we had some 680 combined lbs. at DT.

That's probably more than our entire DL weighs right now.

Better be careful that you aren't taking literal or someone on this thread might point out that 600/4=150, and UT has never had 150 lb D-linemen. Because everything is taking literal by some folks rather than understanding a point :)

680/4=170. Da!

That's the thing, it all starts up front. You have those monsters up there and you can run 215-225 guys at LB all day if they can play the position.

I may be wrong on those guys, but it seems like they put on a substantial amount of weight in their combine preparations.

How about have those big guys up front and 225-245 guys at LB to clean up any mess. Bigger is better up in the front 7 more times than not.

That's a distinct possiblity combined by his comments.
