Dooley Wants Safeties at 215#+

That's right, but I was thinking more of M1V1 * M2V2 = M1V1 * M2V2. Conservation of momentum?

But then you have to factor in the coefficient of kinetic friction and angle when the two forces meet.

Queue discussion about Chris Johnson. That guy straight up defies the laws of physics.

I don't just disagree, I think it is absolutely retarded. Just about every good safety in the NFL right now is under 215.

How many Polamalu's are there in the world or Ed Reed's or Eric Berrys? You don't sound smarter than our coaches or other posters by making fun of Coach Dooley. This isn't high school, and that doesnt make ppl like you.

Dooley is saying this but he's not a bigtime defensive guy. He might be wrong, doesnt mean he's retarded. 205-215 is not a bad weight for a safety. Sorry you disagree, but Eric Berry is 211 right now. That's where Dooley wants his players from what I gather.

I agree with him that our safties are a little small, about like CBs right now, there's a big difference in 180 and 210. That's what Dooley is saying. IMO

Oh boo effing hoo. I could give a crap if people on this board like me. I don't like the vast majority of them. A lot of you guys need to work on that over-sensitivity thing.

Wanting bigger safeties to fit a defensive scheme is one thing, but saying you want bigger safeties to help tackle is another. There are plenty of safeties out there who are less than 215 who don't have a tackling problem.

I have the rankings of the 2010 class of Safeties, I am going to list name and weight, here is the link.

WalterFootball.com: 2010 NFL Draft: Safety Rankings

This weight is the listed weight before the NFL Draft, so college weight in my opinion.

I also am going to list their NFL combine 40 time.

Eric Berry: 211 lbs / 4.40

Earl Thomas, Texas Longhorns: 208 / 4.44

Taylor Mays, USC: 230 / 4.30

Nate Allen, South Florida: 207 / 4.47 (EST)

Rashad Jones, Georgia: 214/ 4.54

Chad Jones, LSU: 225 / 4.57

Major Wright, Fla: 204 / 4.49

Larry Asante, Nebraska: 212 / 4.63

Average Weight: 213.875
Average 40 time: 4.48

So, it sounds like to me, Coach Dooley wants a top 8 safety in the NCAA. I don't know about you guys but I would love to have a Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas on our team.

Seems like 214lbs doesn't affect speed too much...

Dooley clearly said 215 lbs., however.

You're right, I bet that 1lb difference will be HUGE! I was commenting to the average of those 8 players.

I could have said, "seems like 230lbs doesnt hurt speed, being that T. Mays runs a 4.30." But I wanted to speak toward the average to make my point.

Plus, I know you were just joking, so don't take my response as getting defensive. Or at least I think you were joking...

Did you even read the thread?

Enough to know that some people are stripping the comment from its context, parsing it down to a ridiculous level, and then proceeding to tilt with the windmills they've so carefully constructed.

We don't even have a DT at 215

This had better be a joke as well...

M. Hughes: 305
G. Clark: 300
A. Jeffrey: 294

I can keep going, but I really don't think you are serious.

It's kind of hard to tell without any smileys or lols though...

You might as well mention your own name so we will know for sure that you are talking in the third person...

Obvious joke, but it does highlight one of the real problems on defense. Interior linemen and LBs should be much higher on the priority list than finding bigger safeties.

Over the course of the game a bigger, stronger safety would have an easier time coming off blocks than a guy who is 20-30 lbs. undersized for his role.

how do you know they aren't?

Do you have a copy of Dooley's priority list at home? It's one comment on a radio show or at a press conference. Now you are saying it's one of his top priorities? Come on man!

You cant be taking yourself serious, I know I can't.

He's listed at running a 4.40 40 time on rivals.com... That's slightly faster than EB ran it at the combines (4.44).

Well, there is a huge difference between a time run at a camp/high school and the time you run at the NFL combine.

Regardless, Brewer has speed. There is a difference in that between track speed and field/playing speed. One is your natural physical capabilities the other depends on coaching. Being in the right place and in a foul mood.

It'll come for Brewer.

Jesus Christ, are you people really this ridiculously sensitive? Where in the hell did I say "DTs and LBs should be higher on the priority list because they aren't right now." Seriously people, pay attention.

Bingo. How fast can he run shouldn't be the question. How fast can he play is what needs to be asked.

We have, currently, 2 DTs commited (327, 255 and similar height/build to Montori Hughes so he'll be upwards of 300 when he hits the field) and 2 LBs that 6'2 and 6'3 and each weight in around 230.

3 have 3 DBs coming in (to cover CB, FS, SS) and the heaviest is 196. Dooley isn't targeting guys that big out of high school. No kid playing DB (unless he's from a pipeline school in FLA, TEX or Cali) is going to weigh close to 200.

Dooley was making a general statement about the team. I would imagine this would be his ideal range of playing weights (imagine a depth chart with actual upperclassmen here):

DT: 300-330
DE: 260-280
OLB: 220-235
ILB: 235-255
CB: 180-190
FS: 205-215
SS: 210-220

That's using a mix of what he's said in the past combined with what he's undoubtedly trying to build and that's a prototypical Bama 3-4. Also, bear in mind a 6'2 210 safety is a lot different than a 5'10 210 safety.

Bingo. How fast can he run shouldn't be the question. How fast can he play is what needs to be asked.

And he's been out of football for more years than he's had games played. He'll make mistakes this year, no doubt.

He offers an extremely gifted and, from what I've gathered, mature athlete in our backfield. Physical gifts are things that can't be coached. Game speed is... and his should come in time. He's just a bit rusty and got burned by some of the most talented players in the SEC, if not the country by taking bad angles and being out of position to begin with.

Yeah you didn't come across as sensitive at all

More like impatient with the utter lack of comprehension some of you are showing. The fact that some of you accuse me of twisting this stuff into something other than what it is is actually pretty humorous considering the responses I am getting.
