Dooley Wants Safeties at 215#+

CDD said in his presser today that our safeties need to be at least 215# so they can tackle big offensive ball carriers. He thinks Waggner (181#) and J. Jackson (190#) would be better at CB, but they need JJ at safety right now due to lack of depth. He likes Brent Brewer's size (205#) at safety.

We also have D. Sapp at 205#, but I've only seen him on special teams so far.

With that in mind, what is Dooley's recruiting strategy for DBs?

Commits
E. Loften (205#) > safety.
P. Martin (196#), add wt. > safety.
B. Randolph (180#) > CB??
T. Thomas (194#), add wt. > safety?
J. Coleman (175#) > CB.

Recruits
A. Walls (184#) too light for safety?
D. Crawford (180#) > CB.
D. King (185#) > CB.
R. Harris (160#) > CB.
K. Marcus (187#), too light for safety?
G. Orta (166#), way too light for safety. CB??

Can Walls & Marcus put on 20 to 30# and play safety, or is Dooley recruiting them at CB? Or not pursuing them at all (Walls?).

What do y'all think?

#17 Brewer is horrible...Did anyone watch the SC game??? This kid is a joke on defense.

You do realize this is the first time he has played football in like 7 years. Once he continues to learn the system, he will be a good one for us. Coaches love his athleticism.

I think you guys are parsing this comment too much. His point seems to be that UT needs to be bigger and more physical in the secondary.

Oddly enough... that's what Saban has gone toward at Bama.

215 might be an exaggeration but I am sure he would rather have his safeties closer to 215 than 175.... which is about where they are this year.

Crap.

I was looking for insight into CDD's recruiting strategy for DBs & I got 8 pages of arguments about NFL safeties & their weights. :banghead2:

My fault for mentioning a specific minimum wt. :blush2: :mf_surrender:

What I really wanted to know:

1) Will CDD move P. Waggner (181#) & J. Jackson (190#) to CB next year?

2) If so, will CDD recruit, say, 4 safeties & 2 CBs for 2011? Commits Loften (205#), Martin (196#), T. Thomas (194#) seem to be the heavier safety types that CDD is looking for. J. Coleman (175#) is a CB.

3) Are some safety recruits too light in CDD's thinking? Is commit B. Randolph (180#) better suited at CB??

4) Other potential recruits:
A. Walls (184#)
D. Crawford (180#)
D. King (185#)
R. Harris (160#) > CB.
K. Marcus (187#)
G. Orta (166#), way too light for safety. > CB??

Tino is a CB here. We have 3 committed and are still looking at Orta and Marcus.

Consistently irrelevant. You're trying to disprove a point that was never made in the first place. Did you even listen to the presser or did you just read the OP and have at it?

Did you read just that one post or the rest of the thread?

I don't just disagree, I think it is absolutely retarded. Just about every good safety in the NFL right now is under 215.

Almost as retarded as taking this kind of comment with an absolute literal pov.

How many good NFL safeties are under 180?

You are so interested in finding something to disagree with that you miss the main point: UT's safeties are too small.

I thought he said "ideal weight between 205 and 215". I think we're looking for a balance of about 2.9lbs/inch of height.

That gives a weight of 203 for 5'10 safeties up to 215 for 6'2 safeties. Berry is listed at 6', 211 on KC's website. That gives him a height/weight balance of ~2.93. Troy Polamalu (5'10/207) is just over 2.95 as well. Those are actually on the lighter end for most SSs. FSs, from what I can tell, are usually around 2.8lb/inch.

I believe he actually does know what he's talking about despite the best efforts of some on here. This isn't me saying "he'll win a NCG in 2012"... just saying there is a definite method to the madness.

Jackson would not play safety in the NFL unless he put on about 20 lbs.

utsports has him at 197

He's probably a hair over 190. Although UT is weird, some of the guys are smaller than they are listed, but I saw Montario Hardesty once and I think he was 8ft tall and 2 tons of pure granite. UT had him listed 6ft 215lbs and human.

If Dooley wants 215-pound safeties, then that can only be good, because I remember reading something in physics class about mass and velocity and momentum... :compute:

No. Brewer is plenty fast to play safety, he has been out of football for 5 years! When he gets a bit more in step with the game he will play with instincts instead of thinking about it.

Brent Brewer is a freaking stud. Art Evans has been doing football without stop and he gets abused. Brent Brewer makes $$$ playing baseball, then shows up at UT and his first year is playing well during the season.

I agree. I mean, I haven't clocked him, but watching him make a few tackles (hard tackles) vs. Bama, it it looked like he was flying to the ball...at least that's how it "seemed" on TV.

Not many 190 lb safeties hit like Janzen Jackson. I would take his closing ability and how physical he is over a bigger slower safety any day. But I'm no coach.

Two different coaches (Kiffin & Dooley) have now said Janzen is better suited at CB. Hopefully he'll get a chance to play there before his career at UT is over.

Janzen would be one of the best CBs in the nation if he could ever play it full time.

A Corner that both cover a WR and square up and hit (and hit hard) a RB is extremely valuable. A lot of cover corners shy away from contact.

We either produce a good FS or an amazing CB in the NFL Draft is the point that both Kiffin and Dooley are making. And producing draft-able NFL talent is a major focus of Fulmers, Kiffins and Dooley's staffs. It has to be due to how UT has to sell itself as a program.
