*****Early National Signing Day Thread*****

The real question is why is David Sanders the only 5 star in our class. We need to be getting 2-3 a year to stay in playing field with top of SEC.

Going off On3 Recruiting Rankings,

Tennessee is behind Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Auburn (WTF), Texas A&M, and LSU. They are barely ahead of Florida.

We should only be behind Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. Our recruiting is still not there. How are we letting Auburn, LSU, and Aggie out recruit us?

Because they are taking any and all troubled players, and several of them will not be on that team in the next couple of years for one reason or another. Most of the players that Josh has signed are still with Tennessee and will be until the graduate.

Now Who had the better recruiting class??

Star rating is all that matters to a large number of our fans.

Fortunately, it’s not a factor for our coaching staff.

Not really getting those 5 stars that Georgia gets every year. Was hoping we'd at least be top 5 this year. Talent matters...it just does.

I’d argue the portal is almost, not quite, as important as recruiting. It allows a coaching staff to fill in players that don’t reach the potential they thought, or injuries have thinned depth.
As far as talent being heavy in certain states, it still requires coaches to reach the potential. OSU has as many loses as Tenn and has a reported $20M invested in NIL. Florida, Louisiana, California are states loaded but no team from those states are in the CFP.

Coaching is more important than talent.

Alabama is the most loaded team in the country still but lost 3 games and really don't deserve a top 12 spot. That's the difference between Saban and DeBoer.

A&M piled up great classes under Jimbo and did nothing with them. They have 4 losses this year with still a great deal of talent.

LSU is a fixture in the top 10 in recruiting but hasn't finished in the top 10 in the final poll in the 2020s.

Florida is #12 in the nation on the talent composite. Oklahoma is 7th. LSU is 8th. A&M is 10th. FSU is 13th. We are in between Michigan and Auburn but have a far better team than either this year.

Top 15 classes are fine as long as your coaches are good at their job.

Additionally, there are very few OT ready to come out of HS. We had one, and ge got drafted. We simply lost Seaton.

Second place is first loser. Our coming in second place for kids showed this year. Management, and recruiting hasnt been good at HS level.
It’s been very good. We are consistently in the top 15 and have been outperforming that on the field 3 of the 4 years Heup has been here. We’re slowing down the process of losing main roster guys to transfer and have built a solid playoff bound roster with a lot of limitations with scholarship reductions already. We definitely have room for improvement, but we have gotten better at very quick pace. Just my opinion
Go vols 🍊 merry Christmas 🎄

Makes sense.. him signing that same day gives his teammates more spotlight. If he was not involved it would probably have a much smaller following by press.

I'm not sure how much sense this makes. The program that loses out will leak it.

Very Wrong. You need both to be elite but a bad coach can win a lot of games with a lot of talent. The best coach in the world can't win with no talent.

How would they leak something they have no evidence of? The programs he is not signing with are waiting to know also. Also its happened for years so its not like its some new idea lol.

Its the combination of the two that matters. Good coaches get fired for not having enough talent, and loaded teams see bad coaches get canned too.

Winning "a lot of games" to the tune of 66% win rate with perennial top 5 classes is an abject failure and is nothing to brag about. It's what got Jimbo canned.

What are you even talking about. Using an outlier as an example does not debunk the norm. A good coach can take average players and make them into a good team. A bad coach can take elite players and make them a good team. there are also many other variables in play this is not basketball where you have 15 players and a head coaches fingerprint on the results is outsized. In football its a huge staff with huge responsibilities a football coach in college or the pros or more a manager of his staff and its his staff that does the day-to-day. A good coach with a good AD can put together a good program. Life is not always as simple as fire one guy and fix all our problems. not saying there are not instances when a coach is just not the guy for the job. Just saying its more often way more complex than replacing one dude.

Hiring CJH alone was not what turned UT football around. It was hiring the right AD and the right coach and the right staff.

Need coach and talent. The deal with rankings based only on services findings are not all 5,4, or 3 star guys are created equal and the great validator of these numbers is 3-4 years down the road at the NFL draft. 5's are very limited in number and a safe bet, but half of the coveted 4's get passed by a talented mis evaluated subset of the 3's. So we can all use the numbers for probabilities on signing day, but only time can determine if you picked from the GOOD 4.s and more importantly the good 3's. Signing day starts based primarily on production and physical measurables thru a growing boys JR year do not justify over selling the future or be used to get in line at the bridges edge. Really need to apply each team's previously exhibited hit rate on each rating coupled with retention rate as a positive or negative multiplier and then start tracking each class/player and celebrate or moan after you have some data down the road.

Coaches need to scheme to their team's strengths - not to their own "philosophy".

It will matter until we actually compete/beat Georgia for most fans.

I don't think the Coaching Staff is doing bad at all, I just think it is hard to recruit in Knoxville versus other SEC locations like Athens and Tuscaloosa. NIL is helping a little for us.
