East Tennessee Weather

Update:

I'm going to separate this into 3 Regions of Tennessee.

West Tennessee - Enhanced risk for Severe Thunderstorms. Timing = Afternoon into the early evening. Main threat will be destructive winds in excess of 70 mph. A few tornadoes are possible.

Middle TN - Slight risk for Severe Thunderstorms. Timing = Early evening into the overnight hours. Main threat will be similar to West Tennessee. An isolated tornado or 2 can't be ruled out.

East TN - Marginal risk for Severe Thunderstorms east of the Plateau. Timing = Overnight into the morning hours of Wednesday. Main threat will be gusty winds of 40-50 mph (with an isolated storm or 2 producing in excess of 60 mph). Tornado threat is near 0, but it wouldn't shock me if a brief spin up happened in an isolated area.

A couple of things to note:

1. Time periods listed are an approximation, and they can change as we get closer to the storm

2. As always, The strength and location of this system can still change.

I assume that most of the people in this thread know the difference between a watch and a warning, but for those who don't, I'd like to explain each watch and warning in detail.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch:

This is issued by the National Weather Service in Norman, OK for areas that are in favorable conditions for Severe Thunderstorms in and around the watch box. When this watch or any watch is issued, its not the time to panic and run around with your head chopped off. Just be aware of the conditions in your area, and be prepared to seek shelter when the storms are near. Another thing about this watch is that the NWS includes the line in all of these watches "Severe thunderstorms can and do occasionally produce tornadoes." What that means is that just because you're in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and not in a Tornado Watch, that doesn't mean that there is zero tornado threat. I've seen many times where a Tornado Warning was issued inside of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

Tornado Watch:

This is issued by the NWS in Norman, OK for areas that are in favorable conditions of likely seeing a Tornado. Like I said in the other watch, you shouldn't panic when this watch is issued. When a Tornado Watch is issued, it is highly recommended that you come up with a plan of action in the event of a Tornado warning being issued. If you have a sturdy shelter, a basement is the best place to be in. If you don't have a basement, then an interior closet or bathroom can be used. If you live in a mobile home or trailer, it is highly recommended that you plan to either go to a Neighbor or a nearby business that has a sturdy shelter.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning:

This is issued by local NWS offices (for East Tennessee, it's Morristown) when a severe thunderstorm is imminent or occurring. When this is issued you need to take shelter immediately. The interior of your house is the safest place to be in a severe thunderstorm. Stay away from windows.

Tornado Warning:

This is issued by the local NWS office when:

1. A Tornado or rotation has been indicated by radar. This doesn't mean that a tornado is on the ground, but there is a good chance that there could be very soon if it's not already.

2. Someone has spotted a funnel cloud or a tornado on the ground.

When this is issued, you need to immediately head to your designated safe spot, whether that be in the basement, closet, bathroom, or another nearby building.

In conclusion, it's important to take all watches and warnings seriously. These are not issued for the fun of it or to incite mass panic. These are issued to keep you and those close to you safe and ready for the upcoming storms.

Here in my part of Crossville we ended up with 8" of snow with over 20" drifts in places from the snow last Friday! It was a pretty snow and the cutoff from big to small amounts were very stark depending on what side of the county you were on.

The SPC should issue an updated outlook in about an hour or so. Hopefully there's not an upgrade to a moderate risk.

Right now looks like everyone in northwest AL, west TN & KY, middle TN, and especially north MS (like myself) will be under the gun. Everyone stay safe and be prepared.

Update:

From Knoxville and areas west, the marginal risk has been upgraded to Slight risk for Strong to Severe Thunderstorms. Still a marginal risk for those East of Knoxville. As far as timing of the line, it will reach the valley between 2 and 4 am Wednesday at this time. Main threat will be strong to damaging winds up to 60 mph. Localized flash flooding is possible in areas that receive train like bands of moderate to heavy rain.

A wind advisory is in effect from 4 pm Tuesday until 10 am Wednesday. Sustained winds of 15 - 30 mph can be expected, with gusts between 40 and 50 mph possible, especially in the hilltops and mountains.

tornadic activity for Memphis and Nashville on 2/2/16

There's a threat for a few tornadoes. Even though it won't be an Outbreak, people should be prepared for some potentially rough weather tomorrow in the enhanced risk areas.

Alert!

Tornado watch in effect until 7:00 PM CST for folks in West Tennessee. A few tornadoes and damaging winds in excess of 70 mph is possible.

It's awfully sunny and warm in East Tn. Hopefully that doesn't play a factor in the weather tonight.

We just set a new record high in Knoxville at 75 degrees. Even though it's warm and sunny, the dew points and humidity aren't very good for bad storms at those time.

It sure weakened coming off the plateau though.

More like strengthened. Between Nashville and Crossville, there was no Severe T-Storm Warnings or even a Significant Weather Advisory. Once it reached the plateau, it became Severe and started to significantly increase speed. It did weaken some once it hit west Knoxville, but we're still getting slammed with very heavy rain. I expect a flood advisory or flash flood warning to be issued soon.
