Eating and Drinking in Knoxville (merged)

Whoever recommended Pei Wei's, I appreciate it. Took my wife there for V day and we liked it.

There was talk about pig burgers on the "markeith ambles oci" thread a few weeks ago.. I stumbled across this link to get the original sauce... not sure if it's authentic or not? or if this is the same place that ppl were talking about....

buy the sauce.. BRO. JACKS BBQ SAUCE 1922

Info about bro. jack's bbq... Swank Pad's Best of Knoxville
The writer of that review gets major points for mentioning Chris's breasts in his section on Opal's. They were two of Knoxville nightlife's greatest treasures.

went to McDougal's for the first time in a few weeks last night. they got rid of the sauce bar and now charge for the different sauces.

My allegiance once again is to Guthrie's

McDougals should be toast shortly. Also, I heard Chili's on the strip is closing. Great Wraps is also vacant now. That place is going to become a ghost town

went to chilis tonight. it will be closed on wednesday.

so if u want poor quality food from a company that cant make up its mind as to what kind of restaurant it is go soon.

Good Riddance

Mcdougals in now closed.

Chilis closes today.

Great Wraps is closed.

Maybe the strip will become affordable to rent soon. Its right around $2 a square foot right now.

that's a shame... at times, there seem to be more homeless ppl than students on the Strip....

My niece goes there and when I've gone to visit I've been surprised at how it has gone downhill. She thinks I'm just over estimating how it was in the past but it used to be just swamped with the hottest people. I just think they (the students) don't party as much in bars anymore.

It certainly has changed in the past decade...my freshman year was 1997-98. Also the year of the football and women's bball national titles...the strip was awesome back then!! A good time to be had any night of the week, but Thursdays were ridiculous!

$5.00 dollar, big gulp's and nickle beer would do that

They need to put a Bojangles where McDougals is. Can't go wrong there.

I like Bojangles but I think Popeyes is better. First time I ever tried it was about 30 years ago in Lake Charles, Louisiana. We would spend the summers down there with my dad and he would take us out to Popeyes. Good memories.

It's only a matter of time for the powers that be to deliver us a Cookout on the Strip. That would finally sink Gus's and their pursuit of unfriendly service and inflated prices once and for all.

Sushi at Sobu last night. Good and fairly reasonably priced. Nama is still King in K-town, but they know it and you have to pay for that!

We went to Irish Times afterwards. I'll say this: for Farragut, that place is a lot of fun on the weekends. The band was great and it was jam-packed. If nothing else, it's a good place to "people watch." Oh, and beware the Irish Car Bombs. :)

Mellow mushroom has 75 cent PBR tall boys on Thursdays and always have a pint of the day (thinks of dead guy ale day). Some local bluegrass plays on Thursdays as well.

Top 4 restaurants in Knoxville:

1.)Bistro by the Tracks (or By the Tracks Bistro, however you want to call it) and I think it was better before it moved next to TGI Fridays and Aubreys dude took it over.

2.) Nama - duh, eaten sushi all over the world, and just can't get enough of this delightful fusion sushi.

3.) Pasta Trio - rustic, simplistic italian, BYOW gem. fresh pasta, and if u don't find anything on the menu 9 times out of 10 the cook will make u whatever u want.

EDIT (forgot 4)

4.) Northshore Brasserie - very simple french...terrible location imo, but outstanding seasonal menus.

really, as far as anywhere else...bleh. Ruths Chris is ok i guess due in part that we don't have much else to choose from when considering quality dining.

We decided to hit RouXBarb for my wife's birthday dinner and were treated to another fantastic meal. IMO, it's the best grub in K-town. Bruce was ultra-cool and treated us to an extra-special "dessert," courtesy of Tennessee's finest hill-dwellers.

Bruce was better at Bogartz...too bad he couldn't keep his finances in order to keep that place alive. Bruce is a good cook tho in general, although he did a steak delmonico once I had, and totally overcooked it, then actually got mad in the open kitchen when I sent it back. lol

O, and another critical review. That Echo, or whatever its called is way over hyped. The food was fair to ok. The chef has no clue what a visually asthetic plate of food looks like. Every single course I had, the entire plate was full of surprfulous (wow sp) mixed greens which had no additional benifit toward the dish, or the plate was full of sauce everywhere.

Most of it looks like mess on a plate. And not paticularly the greatest tasting mess. I could forgive poor plating if the food was outstanding.

What I will say, that poor building has been through the run of restaurants. I didn't like Mango too too much...the french restaurant that came in second was pretty ok, but the restaurant failed when it came to interior design...now this echo place has a pretty interior but par food.

Oh. One other thing before I go.

La Costa.

Why, Oh Why...this place gets nominated for Metro Pulse awards, and people praise it.

I went. Had the duck quesadilla with apricot and manchego cheese as a starter. So the chef puts dried apricots into the quesadilla with duck and manchego cheese. Dried apricots, with all that concentrated sweet KILLED THAT DISH, and it almost made me question whether or not the chef was a 12 year old cooking for the first time.

Entree - I had the salmon, creamed rice - spinach and cherry tomatoes with a honey vinagirette. It made me question whether they knew what it meant to assemble a dish on complimentary flavors all working in harmony. It was a disjointed no-note entree.

Granted, thats all I had. My friend had something else that I didn't like either, we split the worse bit of spinach queso I've had in Knoxville.
