How extensive are the stores for these? Do you have permanent access to the books or is there a limit?

i've seen one kindle advertisement say they have a library of 400,000 titles and another say 1 million+.

barnes and noble ads say 1 million+, but the guy at barnes and noble said that it is more like 4 million. said basically anything in their library.

nook and nook color accept a number of different formats (basically everything except the kindle format) so you can download content not from barnes and noble and transfer wirelessly, via sd card, etc.

with the nook color you can have electronic versions of newspapers and magazines delivered to your device on a daily/weekly/monthly basis as they come out.

oh yeah, for battery life on the nook color i was told 9-10 hours.

kindle and nook run around 149
nook color runs around 249
e-books can vary, but are usually the cheapest option between hardback, paperback, or e-book...commonly around $10-12 range i think

You have to pay for these though, right?

there might be some that you could get for free, but i am guessing that most of them you would have to subscribe to and then set it up to come electronically. we (meaning she) has several magazines that come weekly and end up cluttering the coffee table so if i get her one, that will be something i look into.

Have just read the first 3 Harry Potter books on my laptop - I could get used to doing without paper.

Wife got a nook the other day. I didn't realize how small the files are when you download books. I did 1400 in about an hour.

The Amazon Kindle store is pretty extensive. Not sure about the others.

I believe you have permanent access to any books you have purchased and can re-download them at any time.
Barnes and Noble's website has a good selection, too.

What tipped me to the Nook over the Kindle was the fact that you can purchase or find free EPUB books anywhere on the internet and load them on the Nook. The Kindle forces you to use Amazon and its proprietary file type.

Project Gutenberg - free ebooks online download for iPad, Kindle, Nook, Android, iPhone, iPod Touch, Sony Reader

This site has a ton of "classic" books in EPUB format whose copyrights have expired and are now public domain.

Who has one?

I have the wifi Kindle and am pretty pleased with it so far.

The new Nook looks like a decent device. However, one thing I really like about the Kindle is you are able to view purchased books on a variety of devices -- phone, ipad, computer, etc.

just got the Kindle last night

Does the e-ink strain your eyes after awhile or is it pretty easy on the eyes?

Just played with one of the nook colors (that just sounds wrong imo) at b and n and spoke with a salesperson. It is nice and they will have an ap store after the first of the year. I will be purchasing after christmas.

App Store? The Nook Color is sounding more and more interesting.

Just got the original Wi-Fi nook. Great for simple reading, which is all I really need. My Droid can handle apps and all that. Easy to use, very functional.?
