Here is simple exercise on free trade and the foolishness of tariffs. Take an item from your house such as a refrigerator. Mandate that we will build these in Tennessee. We will not outsource any labor or import any materials from outside the state of Tennessee. All the metal must be mined and refined inside the state. The rubber for gaskets must be grown in greenhouses and processed inside the state. Apply this to every little component that goes into this refrigerator. What do you think the quality and price of the refrigerator is going to be?
Aside from the issue of economic liberty (if you don't have economic freedom, your not free), free trade allows us to use comparative advantage. There may be less workers since we don't need to maintain a greenhouse to grow rubber but we are richer by having a better and cheaper refrigerator.
