Edward Snowden: American Hero

It's simple character assassignation.

He has done enough for his character that there is no need for an assassination of it from the Government. He was charged with sensitive information that he leaked and is guilty of such. I am still not sure why you are defending this, but you seem to be ok with individuals taking it upon themselves to publically release sensitive information that they are charged with protecting as they seem fit. The fact that he did or did not sell information to another country is irrelevant to me and would only worsen what he is guilty of. He is in no way a "hero"

So what are the negative consequences of his actions? They must be really bad if they nullify a whistleblwer's status as hero.

Deflection.

Hypothetically speaking, then. What are the negative consequences?

Are you asking what the negative consequences are of a individual entrusted with sensitive information to be able to divulge that information to anyone they feel they should be able to?

Good question, I'm not up to speed on everything concerning Snowden so I don't have an answer for that question. I was only clarifying the point that this guy is no hero even in the loosest form.

No. What are the consequences of his specific actions? He couldn't whistleblow without sharing sensitive info. Seems silly cause any whistleblower from intelligence is automatically not a hero

The reason you don't know is because there have been no serious negative consequence. This silly article from the Sunday Times is the best they got, so far

Sorry, I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning, but are you talking about consequences for the Government or his own personal consequences?

If it is the latter, then he would face criminal charges that could hold financial penalty, prison, or death. Depends on the severity of his actions.

There is no way for either of us to know what the consequences have been.

Serious negative consequences for Americans.

There are protections for whistleblowers........the ICWPA was created just for it

You should probably wait a bit to determine what the consequences will be. Do we want to set a precedence of allowing anyone who is charged with protecting sensitive information to be able to release it to anyone they wish because they feel like they should?

him "blowing the whistle" on the NSA is fine and can be applauded. him handing over thousands of sensitive documents to foreign nations = treason. therefore he is a traitor.

you don't right off murder because the guy closed down a shop lifting ring.

Yeah there is. We will never know all the consequences good and bad, but if this results in disaster, we will know about it. The government needs a reason to point the finger back at Snowden.

Except he went about it the wrong way and the illegal way

I think it's something that should be judged case by case. So far, Snowden looks like a hero. If China brings war to us because of something Snowden did, I will change my tune. I feel pretty certain that nothing big will really come from the information shared.

Both entities can be deemed wrong in this situation. Just because one firmly believes that Snowden is in the wrong here, doesnt mean they believe what the NSA was doing was right, or legal.

It's way to soon to know what the result will be. Neither you or I (probably the gov't also) know what is going on.

Then I 100% disagree with you. I value sensitive information and being charged with the responsibility of having it on a higher level I guess. It's not up to that individual on who they can divulge that information to, no matter what it is.

China will not bring war. It wouldn't be as overt as that.
