Edward Snowden: American Hero

The oath you're probably referring to says "support and defend the constitution." You've stated you believe the government snooping is unconstitutional. There's a disconnect there.

As far as using the proper channels, my guess is these programs were greenlit all the way at the top across multiple administrations.

Not only defend it, but defend it "against all enemies, foreign and domestic". Clearly the government in this scenario was an enemy of the constitution.

You can "support and defend" the Constitution without going rouge and taking it upon yourself to release protected information as you see fit.

Do I have to highlight or perhaps write in crayon where I say that I think what the Government was doing was completely illegal and unconstitutional as well? You dont have to believe Snowden is a hero to also believe that what the Government was doing was very unconstitutional and heads should roll.

Sometimes doing the right thing is illegal.

Honest question:

Do you really think anything would have been done if he would have reported this through the proper channels?

Does it not strike some of you as odd that a supposed defender of the constitution seeks refuge in Putin's Russia?

Allies of the US would not have given him asylum. I guess that makes him more of a survivalist than an outright hero.

You're watchin too much Fox News. Why do you think he went to Russia? Probably because Britian, France, and any other ally would have extradited him in a heartbeat.

The Director of the NSA lied to congress to protect these spying programs. Who in the proper channels do you think would have had the power to correct them?

As the law stands, you still have to make all attempts possible to raise these issues up through your chain, even up to Congress. I will 100% agree that whistle-blower protections need to be looked at and need to be expanded upon.

He would have been dead well before it ever reached congress. And you would have never known he existed.

I don't know.

If it was 1999 Russia, not a big deal. But a true friend of freedom has to be really desperate to seek comfort in this regime.

The only reason he isn't dead is because he is in Russia. There were CIA agents giving off the record statements that they wanted to kill him for what he did. There's still a good chance he gets killed over this.

Yeah, cause the Russians took the information that Snowden revealed to everyone and then started multiple wars all over the world with the knowledge gained...

What would you know what they've done with his spy work?

And, for the record, most spy work doesn't result in war.

Probably been charged with crimes. But granting that it was rational to flee, he didn't have to flee there.

It smells fishy.

The man is as much a whistleblower as I am. Contracted by the Russian SVR is about 5000 % more likely.

Edward Snowden: SVR Hero, back at it again.

Snowden internet-media prize established in Russia

An Edward Snowden internet-media award has been established in Russia for achievements in the modern information area, Ekho Moskvy radio said. This is the first prize of its kind in Russia, according to the radio station, which is one of the organizers. Nominations can be submitted by news, business and other online media.

If his motives were really to expose wrongdoing by the govt. out of the goodness of his own heart, I'd agree the man is a hero, but it seems to me all he's going to do is live out the rest of his days like a king in a country that's even more backassward than this one when it comes to these kinds of things. He did his duty for the SVR, it embarrassed the hell out of the US, complicated our alliances with other European nations and god knows what else.

They named an award after him. How is he to blame for that? I saw nothing saying he was involved. Am I missing something?
