Eight Million Dollars

If it means getting the most prolific offensive mind in all of college football… what school wouldn’t come up with double or triple that amount in a split second? We should know better than anyone just how difficult it is just to find a competent coach let alone an elite innovator like Heupel. It would be a massive mistake to not lock this down to a massive, long term deal ASAP.

You just know it will be a string of lazy hires if we lose him.

aTm and Auburn would pounce on that miserly sum!

Good point about Auburn as they will fire Harsin the day after Iron Bowl, imo. He has so much baggage: relationship with his asst from Boise State to his daughter being impregnated by one of Auburn’s DB’s. Apparently Auburn saves a large sum of money if they hold off. Plus, the President rather wait to have their AD in place.

TN has always been a storied program and Heup can win championships here. I think Heup would want to enjoy the fruits of his labor with his recruits to compete for titles rather than leaving.

AD White and boosters will pay to keep Heup, so it comes down to his family being happy, and I assume they enjoy Knoxville.

Edit 10/31 - Harsin just fired @ Auburn.

For everyone thinking we are going to lose CJH, who do you think is going to buy out his contract?

For everyone wanting to pay Saban like money before we lose CJH, who is going to poney up $8 million to buy out his contract?

History is a great example to pay attention to. How many coaches have had an excellent first year or two then receive a major contract only to have it bought out. We can see it is about to happen with Jumbo and the Charlie Wise deal at Notre Dame, among others.
Auburn paid $75 million to move on from Gus.

He gets paid as much as Eli Dinkywitz and $2 million less than Lane Kiffin. Alabama estimates that Saban is worth $25 -30 million a year so they are getting a bargain.

The amount of excitement Heupel has brought to this program is worth a Top 5 salary, and definitely Top 10.

Worried about paying it? Tell Bill Lee to adjust the budget. It’s worth it. Raise my damn taxes I don’t care.

If I was an AD I would have the largest goal achievement incentives ever seen. .

Top 5 recruiting class - 1 million
SEC title game appearance - 1 million
SEC title - 3 million
Playoff Appearance - 4 million
National Championship - 6 million.

If you won it all you could land 15 million. Otherwise pay em a normal higher level salary like 7 million and don't have huge buyouts. IMO paying them this way keeps them focused.

Add an automatic increase for the payouts for repeats. Example bump payout totals 25% for repeats. 50% for three peats etc.

So a repeat SEC title would net the guy 5 mill instead of 4 for the prior year. 1.25 for appearance 3.75 for win.

Don’t give him a raise out of fear of some other team poaching him. Give him a raise as a reward for turning $#i+ into gold!

Heupel is the 11th paid coach in the SEC (out of 14). The only coaches making less are at Mizzou, SCar and Vandy. Let that sink in.

7.5 million would get him to 4th assuming no other coaches get raises. Jimbo is 3rd at 9 million.

Yeah I meant Top 5 in the nation.

Brian Kelly, Mel Tucker and Ryan Day are tied for 5th at 9.5 million.

It looks like 7.5 million would get him to around 10th nationally. This would be a 50% raise.

Personally, I’d try to get to 8 and then throw in significant money for his staff. I have to believe that the revenue boosts already offset these costs.

Nothing surprises me anymore to be honest. I’m like what one poster said why can’t we have anything nice.

Yeah I said he’s worth top 5, but needs to be in Top 10.

Bro if our money people have 8 million$ arranged for a 5 star high school qb to come here. Our power people will put a fair price in Heupels bank account to stay unless he just wants to leave to go chasing dreams. Then its a case of a man's heart. Hard to sway a guy who is rich regardless but prefers another place in his heart.

To you or me, $8 million is most likely a huge chunk of change.

To an AD with the pressure on to make a hire that the fanbase is going to love in order to save his own job, $8 million is a morning coffee. It's not their money.

Our best bet is to see that Heup and family are happy. That's it. He doesn't seem like a Saban type-all about the game and nothing else. Heup has a young family. They are happy in Knox and things are going well, why tempt fate?

Doesn’t CJH have to pay a buyout if he decides to leave to accept another position?

A&M is seriously saddled with fisher for 95+ million.

I don’t think a lot of folks are saddled with anyone nowadays for 8 million to the good or bad.

You mistakenly assume that the school has leverage when it comes to how they pay good coaches. The reality is that there are only a handful of really good coaches while there are 30-40 schools that REALLY want a good coach. You say a base salary of $7 million after this year? That is less than UF offered a G5 coach with no P5 HC experience.

No HC would give up guaranteed money for the chance to make more based on bonuses that depend on beating Bama, UGA, and multiple other top 10 teams.

I have not looked at his contact specifics.

Usually though, the buyout is the buyout-regardless of who pays it.

The hiring school usually pays the buyout or in other cases, makes the coach paying the buyout part of the salary negotiations.

Realistically, it's not a matter of just more money at some point. It's a matter of where you want to be.

If Heupel is happy in Knox, has an AD he trusts, things are going well, and his family is happy-why would be leave for another "unknown"? Now realistically if tOSU, ND, stuff life that came calling he may leave. You really thing he's gonna leave UT at this point in time to go rebuild Nebraska or some crap though for an extra $500K a year? Not gonna happen.
