Electric Vehicles

EPA and clean air act. Massive misuse of legislation. CAA gives the EPA the ability to control tailpipe emissions of ICE automobiles to best available technology. What the Biden administration is attempting to use it to do though is to set ICE emission standards to an unattainable level in order to effectively outlaw new ICE cars, thereby FORCING you to buy an EV. They are using a rule meant to regulate cars to in effect make them impossible to produce. Congress should be all OVER EPA in this one.
It would be the equivalent of the FDA using meat quality standards to force people into becoming vegans.
Does anyone know what China and India’s Policies for EV enforcement is? Since more than half the worlds population reside in those two counties and they have the greatest growth opportunity I’d think we’d be pushing them as hard as the western world

Carney on ‘Kudlow’: Electric Vehicles Won’t Really Help the Environment

Despite the Biden administration’s full embrace of “zero-emission” vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) will have little impact on the environment, Breitbart Economics Editor John Carney said in an interview Thursday with Fox Business host Larry Kudlow.

“What the Biden administration is doing is not about clean air, which in the U.S. is already the cleanest of any large economy,” Kudlow said. “No, no, what they’re trying to do is destroy the fossil fuel industry. Period, full stop. They’re also aiming for a command-and-control takeover of the entire U.S. auto industry. This is the biggest industry takeover since Joe Stalin met Vladimir Lenin.”

Just a bit of first hand experience: I've had my EV 4 1/2 months. I've purchased one fill of gas for my second car since December ($60 premium). And my average electric bill is up $30 per month. So that works out to about $40 per month this year. For the same period last year our monthly gas bill with two gas cars was about $70 a month. Yea we don't drive a lot but it should be a reasonable comparison.

Bro, you need to get out more. We don't drive all that much, as my commute is fairly short, but we still spend at least $350/month.

By my calculations, if I charge at night (off-peak), we will save about $2500/year.

My Tesla app thinks we’ve saved $3100 the past 12 months, and I think it’s pretty accurate.

Mine gets delivered next Monday. I'm pretty excited.

0-60 in 3 seconds + no gas money + $7500 tax credit + trigger Libs = no brainer.

It's white. Trying to decide between orange or black racing stripes. My wife thinks no on the orange. So maybe I'll do an orange/black wide/narrow to compromise.

For one car or two?

You got my curiosity up, so I took a look at the destinations that we go to most often. Remember, we're retired so no commute..

Costco, Home Depot, Walmart, groceries, wine shop, gym, shopping malls, farmers market, most of the good restaurants and sports bars as well as the nearest golf coarse are all within a 7 minute drive. U of O athletic facilities are all within 13 minutes. Doctors, dentist and hospital are all within 10 minutes. Three other golf courses that I like are within 20 min.

Others: Eugene airport 14 min., favorite bakery 17 min, sister-in-law 1 hour, PDX airport 2 hours, Oregon coast 1 hour 12 min. Bend OR 2 hours 38 (think lots of golf), Bandon Dune 2 hr 38.

That's still a lot of driving to do on only 17 gallons a month! (I assume gas is close to $4 there?)

Well lots of those places are in clusters next to each other. Home Depot, Walmart and one of my favorite grocery stores are either next to each other or across the street. Wine shop, gym, mall shopping and two of my favorite restaurants are all in one cluster. So really only 3 regular destinations and I'm typically going to them once every week or two. Premium is $4.07 today at Costco. Round trip to the 3 primary destinations totals 14 miles or about half a gallon in my gas Mercedes.

Do you park your EV inside your garage?

We’ve had the car 13 months and it has 28,000 miles on it.
Wow. That's a lot of driving. Yeah, if you're doing that much driving, you are saving a lot on gas, no question.

Big picture, do you envision the car paying for itself or not necessarily?

I just filled up for $82 and will fill up again Wednesday or Thursday. A little jealous lol

Wait, Tesla's trigger libs? I though all R's were triggered by EVs.

My F250 has 490k miles on it and has been paid off for a decade. 1) they don’t make an EV work truck. 2) the technology for an EV truck that will do what I need does not exist. 3) I can by a shitload of diesel for the cost of a new vehicle.
But that’s my situation.
I just don’t see how an EV can last long enough to pay for itself. The current life expectancy is 6-9 years.

I saw that the cost for a new EV truck in California that they are mandating is between $300k and $500k, while a diesel is about $150k. Look for nobody to operate a truck in the communist state when the liberals start their utopia.

That's amazing that you've gotten that many miles from your truck. It's a little early for me to consider switching to this technology. I'm bothered by the re-sale issues of an EV. Mainly, what happens when the battery has lived its life. Not only is the car worthless, it's worse than that. I've heard figures of $5K and up to dispose of the battery. EV owners for the most part seem to say that they are buying the car without the expectation that it'll save them money. They just want to enjoy new technology
