Been debating this in my head for a few weeks and thought it would be worth discussing.

My list -

Coach K
Roy Williams
Bill Self
Tom Izzo
Jim Calhoun

This is who I think currently belongs in that category. There are some who were 5 or so years ago who IMO have fallen a bit (Boeheim) and others who will be but aren't there yet (Stevens).

Open to discussion, just keep in mind that I'm talking the best of the best. Not good or great.

Thoughts?

I think Cal's in that group. Makes Final Fours with regularity. He'll be the favorite to win it all next year.

Tough for me not to include Pitino and Boeheim.

I'd put all three in that group.

I thought long and hard about all three (30 minute drive to and from work allows random thought time). Pitino and Boeheim were both in the "5 years ago most definitely but not now" group because I think they've lost a little bit. There's just something about Cal that doesn't say elite to me. Maybe it's that he's not won one, I don't know. I think he's a great overall coach, but I just can't group him with those 5.

I can see the argument that any of the three should be, I just don't think they are currently.

If we are talking pure coaching, I wouldn't put Roy Williams and Bill Self in that category.

I think Roy has proven at UNC that he does belong in that category.

Bill Self, IMO, still needs a few more years and another National Title. He will certainly be tested next year.

I don't know how you do not include Boeheim and Pitino on that list.

Bill Self doesn't belong on this list, IMO. Squanders elite talent year in and year out in the tourney.

My five:

Coach K
Roy Williams
Tom Izzo
Jim Calhoun
Rick Pitino (did a great job with that team this year)

Just my two cents.

I like the original list but I'd switch Pitino in for Roy Williams. I've seen way too many defensive lapses from Roy's teams to put him on that level as a coach.

I'd think about switching out Self for Boeheim, but with 3 Final Fours in 35 years for the latter I'd probably take Self right now. Boeheim is the one I know the least about, though.

In other words:

Krzyzewski
Izzo
Calhoun
Pitino
Self

I like that list. I think Pitino should be there and once Cal wins a championship, he'll be there too. I don't think we should include him up there now though. I think Boeheim just misses that list.

I just don't think Pitino is an elite coach....currently. I just think he's dropped a step or two the past few years.

And trust me, I respect him tremendously, I just don't put him with the other 5 coaches as of right now.

Bill Self only has a championship because John Calipari is a terrible crunch time game coach. Numerous examples of his teams folding in the final seconds of big games.

Yeah, I remember Calipari's idiotic decision to have his players miss all those free throws at the end of that game.

He needs to be on it now IMO.

So you're saying a list with 5-6 guys total as the elite in a sport should have someone who has never won a championship in that sport? There's no way to add Cal until he wins the big one.
