I saw a record of the Big 12 standings since he took the helm at Kansas a while back. Absolutely unbelievable how much he has dominated that conference.

i think bill self's accomplishments are great.

i just put more weight on donovan because i think what he has achieved at florida is more difficult to achieve than what self has at kansas.

but, self's record is fantastic

Got some help from Texas this year; however, I have been pretty satisfied with Self thus far.

I think that winning National Championships takes a fair amount of luck. Good coaching and good players certainly put one in position to take advantage of the lucky breaks; however, in a single elimination tournament, one bad shooting night (or, one great shooting night by the opposition) can, and usually is, the catalyst for more talented teams to pack their bags up early.

I don't think anyone would disagree with that. People can say anyone could've won a Championship. with Billy Donovan's two teams. Yet, that Kansas team last year was as every bit more talented top to bottom (and I would say more) than that Florida team, and they lost in the 2nd round. Don't act like Billy Donovan was handed the National Championship.

Roy Williams team with Vaughn, Pierce, Lafrentz, and Pollard was far and away more talented than any team in the nation and they did not get past the Sweet 16.

Coach K has had plenty of loaded teams that have fallen well short of winning the championship.

Agreed. Just think of all the NBA talent of that Kentucky team last year. And then the Derrick Rose-led Memphis team. People that think anyone could've won with the Florida team are way off base with all the teams that have had as much or even more talent and failed to win it.

As long as the tournament is single elimination, the winners will owe a great deal of gratitude to Fortuna.

A name that gets overlooked is Thad Matta

what has Thad Matta ever proven besides being able to land recruits? He doesn't even have a Final Four on his resume. No way does Matta belong on this list. Neither does Billy D and I can't say Self does either, although Self is the closest thing to it right now.

No.

Another thing that just hit me rereading this thread is how ridiculous the idea is that certain coaches aren't that great because of where they coach. Can someone please explain to me the dip when Guthridge and Doherty coached at UNC if it still doesn't take a top notch coach to win at any school regardless of tradition?

Though I agree with most of the rest, he does...he and Greg Oden beat Tennessee to get there.

Matta is a miracle shot and a miracle comeback away from never even getting Ohio State to the Elite 8.

Bill Self is absolutely on the list. Billy Donovan has some extremely nice accomplishments, but I see him having little chance to add much more, to be honest.

I forgot about his little fluke with the 35 year old. Either way he shouldn't even be part of the elite conversation.
