Elite Men's Basketball Coaches

Yeah, I remember Calipari's idiotic decision to have his players miss all those free throws at the end of that game.

That's not what I'm talking about. The game never goes to overtime with a competent coach. He choked, again.

I'm not saying he has never made mistakes, but it's not like he's Les Miles out there.

I don't think you'd get much argument by calling Cal an elite recruiter and a good coach. You can't be elite in a sport where you bring players in and coach them when you don't have a ring.

Where is Billy D??? 2 Natl titles and 3 NC game appearances since 2001.......

I just don't think Pitino is an elite coach....currently. I just think he's dropped a step or two the past few years.

The guy is two years removed from a BE championship and overall #1 in the tourney.

In my mind, the elite coaches are the ones that put FF caliber teams on the floor on a regular basis over time. They do it often enough and with good enough teams that they inevitably win the thing. Pitino is still in that class. So is Boeheim. So is Self, and as bad as I hate to admit it, Cal probably is, too.

Sure looks like you are defending his coaching and blaming the championship game loss on the players. Just sayin.
I'm not the one acting as if the coach who has taken 3 different teams to the Final Four is some idiot.

Billy rode a team that MHF could coach to the title game. The titles are his only significant argument, but IMO he is in that next tier of coaches right beneath those 5 or 6.

People act like there were 4 hall of famers on that team.

Look at where the other coaches have made their bones and then look at donovan doing it at florida for crying out loud.

An idiot could get kansas, carolina, or kentucky to the final four.

Amazing people claim the back to back gators were uber talented but apparently roy williams, bill self, and john calipari have a bunch of rejects on their squads

I think you have to win a title to be considered elite IMO. Until Cal does it it's hard to consider him elite.

Solid point on Pitino and Boeheim. I'm standing firm on Boeheim as I don't think he's as good of a coach as he was 5 years ago, but I'm really reconsidering Pitino for this group. You make a great case for him.

Donovan's teams are all or nothing. He doesn't field a consistent Final Four worthy team. Plus, he just doesn't pass the smell test for me IMO to be considered elite.

Eddie Munster rode one recruiting class to 2 championships. Since then the gators have been NIT material up until this past season.

You mean this season where they were an overtime away from yet another final four with a roster that has 1 nba player on it (patrick young) while kansas was getting its rear end handed to them by vcu with a squad that has several future nba guys.

Kansas beat more NBA talent to get where they were than Florida did...

Go outside of Florida and Kansas and do a poll of who a college bball fan would rather have as their coach between Self and Donovan. If it's any closer than 80-20 Self I'd be shocked.

Do the same for ADs. I'd expect similar results.

Go to a kansas board and ask them

Like who?

McCamey and Richmond for Illinois and Harper for Richmond are all legit NBA prospects. Richmond was horribly underseeded as a team. Florida just beat a bad team and barely beat the Fighting Jimmers without their best rebounder.

My guess is that would be the same about going into any board and asking them what their thoughts are after a disapointing loss to end a season.

You don't want to take the unbiased fans opinion on who is better?

FWIW, ESPN did a poll in 2009 of the top 10 coaches of the decade and Self got more than 3x as many votes as Donovan. Put them directly head-to-head and I bet the gap gets even wider.

True. They weren't hall-of-famers. Well, not yet. I wouldn't be shocked if back-to-back winners don't make it in at some point. And no, Roy, Bill, and Cal don't have a bunch of rejects. They have freshmen. Every single year. And those freshmen, year in and year out, grow and become great.
Donovan had a solid team that stayed instead of trying to get the paycheck. After they won the Championship, they all could have gone pro. The year before that 3/4 of them could have gone pro. If it were NC or UK, they probably do go pro. That's the difference.

It's the same way that Butler gets to back-to-back championships. They were a solid group of kids that had a rapport with each other that freshmen-led teams don't have. Then, they came back and went for it again. Donovan taking 4 NBA players to win a college game 2 straight years is an easier job than Cal starting 4 freshmen and trying to replicate that.

Wow, those squads were loaded.

Ask kansas fan if they think billy donovan would lose to bucknell, northern iowa or vcu with kansas type talent.

There was even a thread on here about kansas having the easiest path to a final four ever

Hell, if Florida switched places with Texas like they should have, they don't even make the second weekend. (And if they do, they get promptly destroyed when they get there.)

How many NBA players did Florida beat?

There were plenty of threads on here about how Florida on the 2 line was the single dumbest decision the committee made.
