Eric Gordon doesn’t know what to think of the Tennessee football program.
The 5-foot-11, 189-pound cornerback from Hillsboro High School in Nashville said Monday he was surprised to hear that Phillip Fulmer will step down as UT’s head coach following this season.
The uncertainty surrounding UT’s head coaching position certainly won’t help the Vols’ chances of landing Gordon, the News Sentinel’s sixth-best prospect in the state.
“It kind of just dropped them,” he said. “Their recruiting is going to change. I couldn’t tell you right now.”
Gordon, who visited UT unofficially on Sept. 20, couldn’t seem to believe that Fulmer will be leaving the Vols after the season.
“People said he was going to get fired but I really didn’t know since he’s been there so long,” Gordon said. “It’s just a big shock.”
Gordon said he’s unsure about the current makeup of his list of schools.
One school that’s certain to receive consideration is Alabama.
Gordon, who visited the Tide unofficially on Sept. 6, gave credit to coach Nick Saban for Alabama’s resurgence.
“He speaks for himself,” Gordon said of Saban. “All the credit he’s getting, I think he deserves all of it.”
Gordon couldn’t speak to the other schools he’s considering. He said a few schools, such as Texas Tech, have recently run out of scholarships to offer at defensive back.
“A lot of schools are filling up,” he said. “That doesn’t take effect to me. I still feel like I can play anywhere.”
Along with UT and Alabama, Gordon has also expressed interest in Oklahoma and Miami.
As for his full list of schools, only the status of two stood out.
“Alabama’s real high on my list,” Gordon said. “Tennessee was pretty high until Phil Fulmer got fired.”
