ESPN already setting the CFP narrative

With their latest projections they have Ohio State ranked 6 and us at 7. That would have them as the last team hosting and us going on the road to Columbus.

Their reasoning is that Ohio State has 2 “statement” wins- Penn State and Indiana while we only have 1.

I’m happy with going to whip them at their place- just wild how ESPN is trying to justify the masses towards them.

(I realize a lot can and will change- but they dropped 6 spots with their first loss last year. Now losing at home to a .500 team they think they should only drop 4)

Half of the OSU team should be suspended for the first playoff game for what happened after the game was over. I don't think that will be the case and typically the coach would set punishment of some sort - but the OSU coach was ALL FOR WHAT HAPPENED and DEFENDED IT!

Also given what happened, they should lose the right to host because of that. I mean in the SEC teams get fined for rushing the field. Fights between the teams are much worse. Where is the punishment and outrage? It is not there because the B1G is ESPN's darling child so they look the other way.

Hell no they shouldn't have. That Arkansas loss was a blessing. We get to avoid Atlanta and are a lock to be in the playoff

Wait I thought teams did not get penalized for losing in the conference championship games? If Tennessee had beat Arkansas they would be there at 11-1 and probably ranked well into the top 5.

Ohio State lost badly to an unranked team
Miami lost badly to an unranked team
Penn St is going to lose a game
Georgia or Texas is going to lose

If this isn't enough to get Tennessee into a hosting position then I don't know what is.

This is what Heather Dinich is pushing this AM:

I checked CBS, Yahoo, and USA Today, and all have us on the road as well. CBS and Yahoo have us going to a Ohio State, USA Today has Miami still ahead of us and we go to Georgia instead. I suspect some of each have sources on the committee and we're seeing a bit of the views from each.

Who says you don't get penalized for losing a conference title game. That's bogus.

The rankings on Tuesday will define whether we have a chance to host or not. If we are 7, we are not hosting.

None of this is considering conference championship games. More teams will lose

Miami will NOT be ahead of us.

Pull for a close Clemson win, they’ll leave a 2 win SMU in if their 2nd loss is the championship game. It’s the only way the Gumps stay out.

No we absolutely DO NOT want 3 ACC teams in the playoffs. This is the same reason we did not want TAMU to beat Texas. We don't need to be adding more teams for consideration.

Yeah we’d be in the playoff regardless of how the SEC Championship went it we only had one loss. We’d have a chance to get a bye and would be guaranteed to host if we lost in Atlanta.

You have a lot of really bad takes.

OSU won't matter to us. With Miami losing and hopefully Georgia losing in the SECCG and Penn St losing in the B10CG there will be more than enough space for Tennessee to get a home game in the first round.
I think college football fans are split whether they will punish Conference championship losers. Based off what the chairman of the playoff committees response when asked about it when the first playoff rankings were released. He said we haven't talked about it yet but we will be watching the games. So to me I take that as if it's competitive you won't be penalized for the extra game however if you get waxed then they may drop your seed. I see know way they drop teams that are inside the field before the conference championship weekend if they lose completely out but let's say Penn State loses the Big 10 championship they won't lose a host spot because the extra game.

espn/abc The SEC's exclusive network. I don't think they are as biased as before, but they do own the playoffs, so.....
Oh, trust me they are. It is killing them that Bama is on the outside looking in. If they could figure out a way to jump Bama in front of us they would. They would like nothing better than to see us go 3-9 again. Just listen to what they say and how they say it. Their hate for us runs deep. Speaking for myself the feeling is mutual. It pisses me off they have control of College Sports.

It is insightful to know where the CFP Committee members are from.

It's not an exact science, because they're all sports or journalism professionals who have held jobs across the country: in college, in the pros (not just football, other sports), and in the media. But if you read their bios, you get a pretty good feel for where their hearts might be now.

I'll give just two examples of the complexity involved: Gary Pinkel played football at Kent State in Ohio; then bounced as an assistant coach from there to Washington, back to Ohio at Bowling Green, and back to Washington. His longest stint in those days was 6 years at Washington. Then as a head coach, he was with Toledo 10 years, then Mizzou for 15. Mizzou is where he retired from coaching.

Hard to say which of those holds his heart foremost, but his lifetime footprint is mostly in the Mid-west, from Ohio across to Mizzou. The time out west in Washington is the outlier. BECAUSE my suspicion is that the SEC is way under-represented in the Committee, I went with Mizzou as Gary Pinkel's first love. But it could be Toledo.

Second example: Kelly Whiteside. She was a student at Rutgers, then Columbia, studying journalism. She has served as a journalism professor at Columbia and Montclair for a decade and a half, and has written mostly for USA Today (14 years) but also for Newsday, Sports Illustrated, and the New York Times. So her footprint is all over the northeast. She probably thinks of herself as a New Yorker. I put her star at Rutgers, in Jersey.

The 13 committee members map out like this:

Chris Ault -- Nevada
Chet Gladchuk -- Navy or Boston College (charted him Navy)
Jim Grobe -- Wake Forest or Virginia (charted him Wake)
Warde Manuel -- Michigan
Randall McDaniel -- Arizona State
Gary Pinkel -- Mizzou or Toledo (charted him Mizzou)
Mack Rhoades -- Baylor
Mike Riley -- Oregon State or Nebraska (charted him Oregon St)
David Sayler -- Miami
Will Shields -- Nebraska
Kelly Whiteside -- USA Today writer; Rutgers or Columbia (charted Rutgers)
Carla Williams -- Virginia
Hunter Yuracheck -- Arkansas

On a map, that looks like this:
1733073275215.png

Three of the 13 are from the Pacific/Mountain West area ... Three are mid-western ... one is B12 ... and five are Atlantic Coast footprint. Only one, Arkansas, is SEC. Well, two if you count Mizzou. Most of us probably don't, lol.

That big, open nothing from the SEC part of Texas, across Louisiana, all across the deep south plus up into South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, that could be a sign of SEC under-representation.

The Committee might counter that two of its members played sports in the SEC (Mike Riley, the Oregon State star on the map, was a Bama football player; and Carla Williams, the Virginia star, was an UGa women's BBall athlete). That's not where their hearts seem to be based on a lifelong career.

Is this a problem? Dunno. Maybe it's something for Sankey to spend more time on, or maybe it's not as anemic for our conference as it seems.

Just thought it was worthy of us being aware of it.

Go Vols!

Most projections have Tennessee hosting. I am going to trust that.

It wasn't just that Ohio State lost, the fight after left a bad taste in the mouth for most. It was a bad look for Buckeyes.
That (the fight) could play a role in it if there are players getting suspended. Remember what happened to FSU after their QB got injured? The committee came out and said they look at what players/coaches are available.🤷🏻

Penn St may not lose a hosting spot but they currently have only 1 loss. However Indiana took just 1 loss and dropped below Tennesse and nobody is talking about them being ahead of Tennessee.

Georgia already has 2 losses and needed 8 overtimes to beat unranked GT at home. And Georgia is currently ranked just 1 spot ahead of Tennessee. How in the world does Georgia not drop below us if they take a 3rd loss. That would be an outrage and mean that playing the SECCG is completely meaningless.

IMO, we either go to Columbus or the best roster money can buy comes to KTown. My money is on the Vols traveling to suckeye land in the early morning Saturday slot.

I guess it's the element of the unknown. Georgia beats us and head to head should matter to most. So how do we reward a lower team by avoiding the opportunity to lose that game. So I agree with you optics wise is sit house money where if you play and win you get rewarded but if lose no consequences at all. So to me I think it's very subjective. And reality is just like we have seen in the Mens basketball tournament. There will always be someone's feelings hurt. I guess we will find out together after conference championship weekend.
