ESPN: Butch Jones a "fantastic hire" for Tennessee

Listen, ESPN and the sunshine pumpers can try to spin this any way they want. The truth is that Tennessee football was at a crossroads and we made another budget hire. It's not Butch Jones' fault, it's a great opportunity for him. SEC football is currently an arms race and we bought a Red Ryder BB gun.

I don't think you understand. We were willing to pay a big gun to coach but not a single big gun wanted the job. Therefore, we had to get the best we could. Given our track record over the past 5 years, why would a big gun want to coach here. We need to face reality.

I totally agree. I am not saying the Jones can't be great but I think we are set back at least a few years...and frankly, we were already 4 years in the hole.

Look, I understand all of the loyalty being shown to the team. What I don't understand is the sunshine crew trying to tell me that if I dont want to spend 50 bucks a game to watch us fade into mediocrity then I am a bad fan.

I'm not convinced they actually went after any "big guns". Gundy was the closest I guess. This pretty much went right down the speculated list from the start.

You have to be hammered drunk to say if I was a vols fan I'd be thrilled. are you kidding me? We have looked like idiots and continue to. Even if he turns out to be a great hire we are a mess and joke

Reality? The reality is that we have a stadium that fits over 100,000 people and we just spent 44 million dollars on a practice facility. The reality is that we have 3 times the recruiting budget of any other SEC school.

I don't think it is asking too much for our bi&ch AD to hire someone deserving of that kind of commitment. We knew Dooley was out by mid-November or earlier. Hart cant find a coach better than Butch in that time??

I'm with you, bud. No reason to knock a guy that turned down other jobs to be here. Franklin took over a terrible Vandy program and turned it around in three years (by way of Maryland, no less). Mullen is on the up at MSU. There is no guarantee of success, but under the same logic there is no guarantee of failure. I'm a proud UT grad and a fan for life, and I will support our team and our coach. I hate that our AD made this search look like a joke, but given all that has happened this week, being turned down by Looey and OkSt's coach, this is a solid hire. He's proven he can coach, now he needs to put together an incredible staff and prove he can recruit. If CBJ can sell the program to the recruits and the fans, he'll earn our support. GBO and welcome Coach Jones to the UT family.

To the fairweather fans out there, if you want to remain PO'd at the AD I have no problem with that. But the moment you bash a coach that turned down other opportunities to be here is the moment I stop listening to you. We don't need fans like that.

i couldn't have said it better. I applaud you. I'll always support the vols. it shames me how some so-called fans are dogg'n jones. As far as i can tell, he hasn't lost a game yet.

Of course ESPN would say this.... They got exactly what they wanted... Another 5+ years of laughing at Tennessee's mediocrity. Whoopee.

Some of you people have issues. I promise, everybody in the world isn't out to get UT and their happiness in life doesn't solely come from our football teams mediocrity. Please don't be so insecure....

But they love Tyler Bray since he can throw a football 55 miles per hour. Wait.... Worley can throw at 51.... ESPN was then confused and they had to resort back to hating Tennessee.

Lmao!! Tell,em. I`m too mad!! Calm down,VN!! Big Orange Butch is coming!! HAD HE COACHED IN 12,WE`D WON 11 MINIMUM!!! GET HIM A SUPERB STAFF& PLEASE VOLGODS LET HIM RECRUIT A KICKER AND A LEWIS/HENRY/STEPHENS STABLE OF STUDBACKS&WE WILL WIN 10 IN 13 MINIMUM!!

It's hard to stop negative threads, negative tweets or negative posts all over the internet when they represent the predominant feeling of a huge chunk of the fanbase. This is a divisive hire, and it will not unite the fanbase in any way, shape or form.

I think that i will wait and give coach Jones a chance to come in and get a season in and then comment on how he is doing. I have waited for the program to turn around, watched old videos of the Vols to feel that pride that we once had. Ive prayed that those days would return, we need help to get there. Give him the chance to do that, try and be positive and maybe just maybe we can return to being competitive in the S.E.C. .

Even if it turns out to be great hire we are still a joke? That may be the dumbest thing I've read on here today, and that's saying something.

Needed better than OK....but there isn't a darn thing I can do about it.

Agree on both points.

If he truely is an "ok" hire. He will be on the hot seat in year 3.

After the last 2 hires UT needed an A+ hire. I think we just hired C+, thats assuming he is "ok".

Why would espn try and spin it any way at all? I don't understand how you can lump them and "the sunshine pumpers" into the same--I assume you meant one which is trying to put a possitive spin on the hire. Why would they try and spin it in any direction at all? They dont have a dog in the race. It's not like they are vols fans trying to convince themselves that it is a good hire to make themselves feel better. They are looking at this hire objectively, where as most people on here don't have the ability to check their emotions and do the same.
