ESPN: Butch Jones a "fantastic hire" for Tennessee

We needed a coach that was a Saban Slayer. I will bet my entire life savings that Butch will not win a game against Saban his entire college coaching career.

Alabama fans are already marking off wins against Tennessee for the next three years on their board.

We all know the truth. We could have had JG but at least one booster, and prob hart too, didnt want it. That would have been the biggest hire in cfb history with the staff he would bring. But that is over.
We got a middle of the road guy who wants to be here. He put himself in a risky spot on the chance we would call. But at least he thinks this job is big.
Not very impressive for a critical hire to a program at a crossroads in the toughest conference in football though.
My biggest concern is that we have tied ourself to another "hopeful" and this time we will probably have to let him work his entire contract length to improve our image for the next time we do this.

And I have to agree.

Guys lets face it. Have you looked at our football program's record the last five years? Did you watch Dave Hart's press conference after he fired Dooley? It was going to be a tough sell.

Butch Jones will be a good fit here. Hell, the guy already BLEEDS ORANGE. He wanted this job and I admire him for that. And he has a winning record everywhere he's been! A step up from Dooley who was 17-20. Sure, the guy isn't named Jon Gruden. But he is a solid hire and I can't wait to see what he can do with OUR Vols.

Welcome to Knoxville Coach! GBO!

I hate the hire, fact is Hart flopped by putting all his faith in one basket like most of us myself included. We just paid for a coach that got beat by DOOLEY. Way to go UT, sink further and further.

Well for those that say running the ball wins in the SEC might as well not watch until the firing PC.

Okay, well I hope you enjoy the 6-6/7-5 seasons that are coming up...I suppose it's better than the ~5-7 under DD. Every little step, eh?

Stop acting like you have any idea what's going to happen.

Unless you want to look even dumber with every post.

Spread offense doesn't mean passing offense, lol.

It is actually designed more for running the football by reading the defense. It also includes an outside screen game (which I count as a run anyway)

Cincinnati averaged 200 yards rushing a game this season

A lot of pessimist here.

I'm as battle worn as the rest. I see all kinds of red when I read the ESPN comments about our football team, but by all standards this a better hire than Kiffin and Dooley. TE man has battled in the MAc and won there.

He also went 19-6 in his last 25 games at Cincinatti...

He turned down Purdue and Colorado, into the hardest conference in the nation, with a broken fan base, and still scarred football team.

All we can do is hope and support, but given his tenure thus far one thug has been the common denominator: he wins, and wins often.

I think he's followed Kelly around and took over the house he built. Any how I'm in. He may turn out to be fantastic. If not he was a cheap hire and in 3 years we can try again with a new AD and the loser Cheek gone.

Than how would you explain his first season at Cincy where he want 4-8, then immediately had a terrific next season?

It appears he did that.

Stop confusing the angry masses with facts. They'll be flummoxed.

We will run the ball under Jones. A lot.

Excellent Point!

I'm not sold on him yet, but the more I research the more I like the hire.

Nothing we can do, but give him a chance and give him support while he tries to fix this mess.

Agree a 100% with you.

:lolabove: When we see the 2nd rate [staff he assembles, the fail of this hire will really start to sink in for some of you.

Bill Parcells used a term frequently in the past, "JAG". As in, "He's a JAG." In other words, "just a guy".

We have yet another JAG as a coach. We have one as basketball coach. Sad day for UT sports.

This is what I am waiting for. I will withhold (most of) my thoughts until he hires his staff, and also to see how this year's recruiting stacks up. He will lose me for the most part if he doesn't come through in these first two challenges.

Technically he lost 56-17 against Georgia while at Central Michigan, but that's besides the point. What is the point is if you have watched these coaches multiple times on gameday... their decisions, their successes, their failures, how many championships they have won, how many big games they have lost, etc. What won't go away is a blowout loss against Derp Dooley's (a solid Tier 4 coach) Tennessee team in BJ's best season as a coach.

Based on that and comparing it against existing coaches, you've hired a solid Tier 3 coach. There is always chances of movement within the future... but this is certainly far from a homerun or solid hire that Tennessee desperately needed.

LOL... So, if your step-brother drives a sports car, and outruns a go-cart-driving Dale Jr, your step-brother is a better driver too, I guess?

Listen, ESPN and the sunshine pumpers can try to spin this any way they want. The truth is that Tennessee football was at a crossroads and we made another budget hire. It's not Butch Jones' fault, it's a great opportunity for him. SEC football is currently an arms race and we bought a Red Ryder BB gun.

Good thing it has a compass in the stock. :)
