ESPN: Butch Jones a "fantastic hire" for Tennessee

One would have to define "good hire" with respect to the current coaches that exist in the SEC.

Who is Butch Jones better than? He's comfortably better than Mark Stoops, Gary Pinkel, and maybe Dan Mullen and Will Muschamp (or somewhat relatively equal to Will Muschamp). He might also be relatively equal to Hugh Freeze.

Who is better than Butch Jones? Steve Spurrier, Mark Richt, James Franklin, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Kevin Sumlin, Bret Bielema, and Gus Malzahn.

Another possible way to look at it:

Tier 1 SEC Coaches: Nick Saban, Les Miles, Bret Bielema, Kevin Sumlin
Tier 2 SEC Coaches: Mark Richt, James Franklin, Steve Spurrier, Gus Malzahn
Tier 3 SEC Coaches: Hugh Freeze, Will Muschamp, Dan Mullen, Butch Jones
Tier 4 SEC Coaches: Mark Stoops, Gary Pinkel

Listen, ESPN and the sunshine pumpers can try to spin this any way they want. The truth is that Tennessee football was at a crossroads and we made another budget hire. It's not Butch Jones' fault, it's a great opportunity for him. SEC football is currently an arms race and we bought a Red Ryder BB gun.
Couldn't have said it any better. Doesn't matter so much if he's a decent coach. He doesn't have anything to sell recruits and that's why he/we are going to be behind the eight ball in recruiting. At least with Strong, he had a lot to sell.

This post is 100% speculation (and your rankings are pretty laughable but that's beside the point) as you've never seen Butch Jones coach against any of them. So you don't really know who he is or isn't a better coach than at this point.

I'm not saying the guy is a good coach because obviously I don't know either at this point. But I'm going to give the guy a chance to prove himself one way or the other before I write him off as a bad hire.

Technically he lost 56-17 against Georgia while at Central Michigan, but that's besides the point. What is the point is if you have watched these coaches multiple times on gameday... their decisions, their successes, their failures, how many championships they have won, how many big games they have lost, etc. What won't go away is a blowout loss against Derp Dooley's (a solid Tier 4 coach) Tennessee team in BJ's best season as a coach.

Based on that and comparing it against existing coaches, you've hired a solid Tier 3 coach. There is always chances of movement within the future... but this is certainly far from a homerun or solid hire that Tennessee desperately needed.

:lolabove: When we see the 2nd rate staff he assembles, the fail of this hire will really start to sink in for some of you.

Bill Parcells used a term frequently in the past, "JAG". As in, "He's a JAG." In other words, "just a guy".

We have yet another JAG as a coach. We have one as basketball coach. Sad day for UT sports.

Idea. Go root for some other team if you are so damn miserable.

Maybe you should watch more college football.

Franklin has taken Vandy to heights not seen before. An 8-4 season at Vandy is pretty outstanding.

Spurrier still has yet to have tremendous success at South Carolina. It is safe to say he's regressed a bit since at Florida. He's made strides...sure...but the blowouts are still there.

Bielema has 3 straight conference championships and BCS bids... enough said.

Sumlin took a 6-6 Big XII team and, in his first year coaching the team and in a new conference, went 10-2 with a young team and beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. No doubt that Sumlin is a great coach who will be competing for national championships as early as next year.

Sorry, but you have no idea. Saban is better w/o doubt, but after that there is no way to know whether Butch Jones is better or worse than the rest of this list until he's had at least 2 seasons to compete.

Okay, well I hope you enjoy the 6-6/7-5 seasons that are coming up...I suppose it's better than the ~5-7 under DD. Every little step, eh?

It's fantastic for Espn.. They can continue to poke and prod Tennessee at every opportunity, without threat of them being relevant anytime soon.. That means more air time to suck up to Saban....It's euphoria in the making...

It is a fantastic hire! The guy is a good coach plus he wanted the job. So, we all need to welcome him to Big Orange Country with open arms!

Haven't read it yet..just sharing with you guys!
How Butch Jones landed at Tennessee - CBSSports.com

Just read the article. According to it, Hart didn't talk to him until Thursday morning.

For the record, I'm disappointed in the hire, but don't think Jones is a terrible Coach. There are some good things to say about him as a candidate.

What I'm disgusted with is Dave Hart embarrassing himself and humiliating the university with this train wreck of a coaching search. What the hell was the guy doing with is door closed for three weeks if he didn't talk to the guy he eventually hired that was apparently #4 or #5 on his list until yesterday morning? It obvious he didn't have sort of plan or process. He backed into this guy.

Whether he's the right guy or not, our coaching search that everyone in the country saw coming months ago ended with a blind dart toss.

His record is 50–27...that's nearly half of what he's won with schools like Centeral Michigan and Cinic...

With what he has to work with at UT he should be able to have us sniffing the top of the SEC again.

Remember, he wants this job.

They'll suck up to whoever is the best, no matter what. They could care less who that person is. They have no vested interest in TN's success or failure.

How dare they hire a coach who only got over seven wins ONCE in five years! One who never won their conference championship even once. Whose best conference finish was second in a weak conference? He has NO SEC experience. And his team got beat 52-28 at the hands of Purdue!

Oh wait, that was Nick Saban's resume when LSU hired him. Never mind.

We needed a coach that was a Saban Slayer. I will bet my entire life savings that Butch will not win a game against Saban his entire college coaching career.

After 3 or 4 hrs to cool down. I can suspend my judgment and welcome Coach Jones to the Tennessee Family. This is supposedly his dream job and there is a place for those that dream to coach at this university! Good Luck
