Honestly the call reversal on the roach foul should be looked at by ncaa officials ( now that emmert is not on the bama payroll). That was absolute cheating by the ref.We were #1 defensive team for most of the year for a reason. We have played this defense all year. We switch everything, use our feet and use our bodies well. When we do it without reaching and get cheap fouls it is a beautiful thing. We challenged everything and turned Duke into a passive, jump shooting team. The foul that was missed badly was the 5th on Roach that the officials for some reason changed when he clearly fouled. Another time Flip jumped sideways into a defender out of control and got a call. Vescovi gets held incessantly and nothing is called.
They can bellyache all they want. Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc…have historically benefited from officiating forever. If Duke played that type of defense they would be all over them kissing their butt about how great they are and everyone knows it. The bias reveals itself every year. Bunch of losers. Jay Wright on the other hand, who is a hall of fame coach was extremely complementary.
I said the same thing this morning...They will start calling fouls on us in pregame. You can bet your azz we won't see that same crew again. So just be ready…refs will call our Sweet 16 game with ESPN goggles on. We will get called for looking at the other team too hard.
I fully expect a pendulum swing next game.
Not saying it is right, just saying our next game will be loaded on touch fouls.
I think it’s the other way around. Touch fouls on the perimeter tend to kill us. We’ve got more depth and more variety inside.
I think we lose on balance if they call it tight outside. Unless Vescovi is absolutely on fire, I think physical play out there usually causes more problems for our opponents than it does for us.Tight on the perimeter is off setting. It gives Vescovi more freedom of movement but also puts him at risk of picking up cheap fouls.
Playing it tight in the paint then Aidoo and Olivier will have an advantage. Let anything go in the paint then Uros and Awaka get to shove opponents around.
After all the years of getting favorable treatment under K, it really is bothering them that they didn’t get the whistles they got accustomed to. Life’s hard Jay, get a helmet. It goes against the narrative that Duke was on a roll and a final four team. The reverse of the Roach foul really showed bias by the refs in favor of Duke. Each Plavik could was reviewed in detail….each one. We just beat them down and ESPN’s Duke grads don’t like seeing their team get beat up like that.
