Expectations next year?

We had a catcher committed from the portal for this year but he decided to take a pro deal instead.

We have a pretty good shot to land the Skenes kid from Air Force. If we miss on him, it’s probably going to be Dickey or someone else in the portal

We actually had the WV catcher transfer, and apparently, he realized that SEC baseball was grueling. So, he quit baseball. Had good pop.

Thanks. What's the benefits of staying vs leaving for Jorel?

Every situation is different and I certainly don't know his exact background.

In general, if you can improve your draft status from say 5th round to become a top-50 pick, I think that is worth big money. Jorel would have a chance to bat second or third, improve his defense, gain experience, add muscle, etc. And again, he has already completed three years of college. So, why not stay and get a degree which may lead to something after ball is over.

Leaving, you get some up front money now and perhaps start a trail to being a MLB second baseman. The odds are stacked heavily against you, but some players do work their way up thru the various levels.

Since Ortega has 2 years of eligibility left (I think), he would have the same leverage next year post-draft as he does right now after next month’s draft. This could work in Vols’ favor...unless he’s just dead set on going pro sooner rather than later.

Yes. I think he could benefit from one more year. Same with Ben Joyce.

Drew and JB should be drafted high enough to go pro.

Difficult decision for mid-rounders..

Must be nice to be early 20s and know you're about to hit the jackpot!

Yes. For first or second rounders, it is really a no brainer. Which is the case for Drew and Jordan.

The ones I was thinking about was like a 5th round pick which is more in the $400,000 range. If you play another year and move up to second round, that is worth around $1.4m. So, it is a million dollar gain.

To kindly refine that some, don’t forget the senior discount if a player has run out of eligibility.

So, it's the same conundrum for him as others projected to be drafted in the lower rounds: Stay in school and get no or little money in hopes of dramatically improving your draft stock in a year and cashing in vs accepting lower round money and getting paid not that much to try to improve over the next year in the minors. You risk getting nothing if you get severely injured in school or risk losing money if you have a terrible year of perfomance in school.

His offensive numbers are very good overall and pretty good in conference. His defense is decent, not great.

Unless he is contemplating a position change (third base is apparently open here), I'm guessing he'll leave, but what do I know? It's a personal decision, as you say.

I remember when I was told in the basketball forum Kennedy Chandler might return because he comes from a family that values education and getting his degree is more important because the NBA will always be there but education comes first….

…..point being no one is returning to school for school if their draft stock isn’t high enough. They are returning to improve said draft stock.

Or for NIL money, when signing bonus draft money is likely to be $2.5-$4.0 million for picks 15-30 (mid to end 1st round), and $1.0-$2.0 million for any 2nd round pick.
