Expectations next year?

Honestly, I’d prefer to see Lawson go pro. Maybe he could take a step forward and I’d look stupid but his hitting in SEC play was atrocious and his fielding in postseason was just as bad. We can replace .216 and 3 HRs in SEC play
I think he could turn the corner. He seemed to hit pretty well in the tournament. His fielding was good enough until the end. He’s a good ball player hope he comes back

Yep and in SEC Only stats he had how many errors? You ready for it…thru 30 games…not directed at you at all…

I agree Russell obviously doesn’t have the best arm. But most of that is on the pitchers. That’s something that both Burns and Doolander have to improve on. They have to develop some sort of slide step to at least use on occasion. I think we could legitimately have the top two pitchers in college baseball if they can do that.
I agree with you, alot of times are pitchers didn’t get out of the way, I was always taught to hit the deck.. because that ball is coming fast…

This has more to do with the SEC (and not Tennessee), but I think one of the more intriguing, precedent-setting players to watch for next year is Brandon Barriera.

His decisions will have a large impact on many top SEC-signed players (including those signed to Tennessee).

He decided to sit out his last few months to avoid injury, and it is causing massive consternation among scouts and evaluators. He could fall out of the first round and come to the SEC. Or he could start a wave of high school players following his strategy (similar to high profile football players sitting on bowl games).

I am pretty torn and don't know how this will affect top SEC-signed talent going forward. On one hand, these guys have been seen for years, so scouts should know them up and down. On the other, what if top talent decides to risk it/a % fall down the rankings/get less signing bonus $$$, and then the SEC becomes more loaded than its ever been.

He's got power. And he's got a frame that could add some more muscle. He's a very good athlete. He just has holes in his swing. And he's a marginal defender at SS. I'd move him to 3d and get him a coach for hitting and one for fielding. I think he could be something if invested in.

Wouldn’t second make more sense since we are concerned about his arm?

Which column is the errors. Watching him it seemed like he made plays idk maybe you are right. Maybe we move him to second where his arm doesn’t hold him back

Throughout the season, and perhaps all across baseball, the official NCAA scoring of hit or error tends to reward the hitters.

As a recent example, using MLB standards, we actually made 10-12 errors in the series against Notre Dame. I haven't looked at box scores, but several of those were probably scored as hits.

Last year, Jake, Max, and Liam were much better defenders than the three in those positions this year. For a top 10 team, we were below average in turning the double play.

Until the final series, Luc was an above average defensive first baseman. I didn't realize how good he is until watching other SEC first basemen in Hoover.

His arm is marginal for SS, but adequate for 3B, in my opinion. SS generally requires a stronger arm than 3d. . Notice how he could just not make the throw from deep in the hole at SS. That's a longer throw than a 3B has to make. Another reason is that his range is marginal, not great. Would be the same thing if he played 2B. 3B doesn't require a lot of range, just quick reactions. Besides, we have second covered with Moore.

You really think Cortland Lawson made 4 errors the entire season?

As I recall, he had three throwing errors against Georgia Tech alone.

The chart was for SEC play only. I can 100% believe that he only committed 4 errors before the post-season. He was lights out and a rock at SS before regionals. No idea what happened in Knoxville, but he was not himself in the post-season. Could have been the pressure. Could have been something else.

I believe stats I showed were from the 30 SEC games. There’s no reason to believe or not, they are stats. If you wanna collect the stats for the whole season it’s a click away.

GBO!!!

Ok. yeah, no point in that. My eyes told me that Cort is average defensively for a shortstop.

He made enough mostly routine plays for us to win 57 games, so that was very good.

I’m not sure what games you were watching, but it seems like the post-season has biased your opinion. Cortland was anything but average at SS before June. He was great. He made some truly awesome plays.

It’s fair to say he was pretty awful at SS during regionals, but before that he was so good.

The only reason I knew that stat was because I had been in the process of comparing his season to AJ Simcox’s final season and of course, there’s not a lot of point in comparing anything but the SEC only stats.

Ok. Yeah, the post season may have biased me. It became cringeworthy.

I understand that it is something we do on our carpet, but he plays so deep. Then he usually doesn't charge the ball and therefore you rarely see him throw anyone out by more than a couple of steps.

Personally, I would try him at third if Maui is as good as advertised. Cort has good arm strength.
