Ben Joyce passed on the draft last year (he had offers). Wanted to play his senior yr and get his degree.
Could be. Especially if we don’t have a third baseman coming backHis arm is marginal for SS, but adequate for 3B, in my opinion. SS generally requires a stronger arm than 3d. . Notice how he could just not make the throw from deep in the hole at SS. That's a longer throw than a 3B has to make. Another reason is that his range is marginal, not great. Would be the same thing if he played 2B. 3B doesn't require a lot of range, just quick reactions. Besides, we have second covered with Moore.

I agree, I do think there’s a time and place for it though.Fwiw, there's a reason analytics killed small ball to such a large extent. It generally doesn't score as many runs.... especially for a team with pop #1-9 like Tennessee.

1) Joyce was coming off a serious arm injury.
2) I’m not sure what “offers” means, but he wasn’t drafted.
3) Joyce is a redshirt junior, not a senior, meaning he didn’t lose bargaining leverage coming back after last year. That’s everything in baseball.
There is an enormous difference in the way a baseball player approaches the draft than a basketball or football player and a lot of our new baseball fans don’t understand that. It’s about slotted money at particular picks, teams strategically going over or under the amounts for those slots, and how much leverage a kid has due to eligibility left. For example, someone will get a steal on Trey Lipscomb this year because he has very little bargaining leverage being a senior.
No one comes back to get his degree if it means giving up gobs of money due to leverage forfeiture. That’s not how any of this works. And it’s not what Ben Joyce did.

And Joyce already earned his degree.I agree with pretty much all this. VU was able to hang on to a couple. We certainly aren’t gonna do any better than that but the program is in a totally different spot than even 3 years ago. Sometimes there are special circumstances.
As for the degree part, as long as you depart in good standing, there’s a program for VFL’s to come back tuition free I believe and finish the degree. I could be wrong on it but I think that’s correct.
Just as an aside…I dread the MLB draft every year.
Listening to the D1 Baseball Podcast, they think we are likely their Pre-Season #1 team for next year.
