Fair Catch?!

Could be worse. I just saw that Iowa lost the game because of the same kind of call. It was a punt return TD. The guy never waved his arms up at all. One arm was pointing and the other waving to the side.

It is a rule, if anyone calls fair catch, the ball cannot be touched again by any player except the player calling the fair catch.

Once a fair catch is called the ball is dead at the point of touching by the next player to touch the ball unless muffed by the player who calls for a fair catch.

Had Cam fumbled, it wouldn’t have counted either, since the ball was dead as soon as it was touched

Who called for a fair catch? They never showed it happening

They said lifting the arms to the waist was giving the play up. Which is normally true, we do that when the ball is kicked over our heads. They said that gave the play up as an illegal fair catch signal, so the ball was dead where Cam touched it.

I can see their reasoning, if people see that signal, they give up. I don’t think Dee thought Cam was going to go catch it though.

It was the correct call.
So if your arms are pointing down, but are away from your hips, even though you are not the one catching the ball, it is considered a fair catch?
Can we possibly get burnt by anymore BS penalties, than what we have?
A fair catch is a player putting his hand above his head and waving his arm, not having his arms 12” from his hips, pointing at the ground.
Say what you want, that was a BS call and a huge change in momentum, coming out of a half that we dominated.
That was not a fair catch signal, at least what was shown on tv wasn’t.

Yes, that gave the defense, which was clearly on their heels, a timeout.
And it wasn’t even a questionable first down, despite how Gary tried to sell it.

If that's true then why does the kicking team never stop until the whistle? Surely they realize the sign for giving up right?

It was a bad whistle covered by a bad explanation and hurt UT

It looked to me like he was signaling “let it go into the end zone” but then the other returner took off with it. Is that the same as a fair catch? Serious question.

They race to the endzone, doesn’t matter if the ball is kicked into the stands or fair caught, or when the whistle is blown, watch the kickoff team, they always do the same thing. It’s a race to the endzone, and as someone who played for a long time, it was looked at on every kickoff to see who was sprinting all the way to the goal line. If you didn’t, you could lose your spot for not hustling

I'm guessing you played when it was still a live ball. That's not the current rule. If the ball is dead then there's no reason to sprint any more. That's just Butch Jones noise. If this is going to continue there's no reason to kick off any more

Who called for a fair catch? They never showed it happening

They ruled Dee made an invalid fair catch signal which they did show.

“This constitutes an invalid fair catch signal. It’s not a penalty, but it causes the ball to become dead at the spot of the recovery.”

According to the NCAA rule book, “A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery.” An invalid fair catch signal is defined as “any waving signal” by a member of the receiving team that does not meet the requirements of a valid fair catch signal.

I still don’t get it. He never waved anything. He simply put his arms out a little beyond hips. How’s that deemed legal or illegal signal.

They viewed him showing both arms out as an invalid fair catch signal. He did it every kick thereafter, and all were over the head or downed in the end zone. It’s an intentional signal.

Intentional signal to who? You can wave your teammates away from the ball without signaling a fair catch. I have never seen a fair catch awarded without the raising of hands above the hips.

Check the finish of the Iowa game today. It’s an invalid signal (like faking the fair catch signal). I don’t believe Dee was waving him off a ball. He was facing the play not the returner. I can’t find a picture of it, though.

It’s a subjective call for sure.

Don’t waste your time, you have the holier than thou crowd who thinks it beneath them to call out officials. Well I’m calling both out for their BS, because I’m over it.
It was a garbage call at a very opportune/critical time of the football game.
what’s crazy is that i knew it was coming, I literally thought to myself, “that was a clean half of football and we will not get the benefit of the doubt in the 2nd half.”
I think I even posted as much at the end of the 1st half.
We act surprised that this keeps happening yet we KNOW it’s coming.

It’s a call Nick will get when he’s behind!
