Fast paced SEC vs Slow 10

Every year, the SEC goes around .500 in bowl games. The good teams usually win while the 6-6 through 8-4 teams lose. The middle/bottom of the SEC just seems to be worse than the middle/bottom of the other leagues while the top is better.
Conference finishes in parentheses…bowl games are selected so that the SEC doesn’t (rarely) play G5 teams & that they play up. It can’t be 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 after the playoffs bc it would tarnish every other conference. Just for example, if bowl games were truly for the best matchups, Tennessee would be playing Clemson/Kansas State/Northwestern/USC.

The Big10 all pretty much had cupcake schedules for most of the to;p gtier group. They don't play anybody much until they hit the playoffs and have to play big boy football. We're seeing how that works for them so far. By the way, recall that Iowa State coach everybody had on their list? Seen his product lately?

Big ten teams recruit and build rosters for November football in upper MW.
How exactly does this work?

"Oh, I think we will pass on this talented 5-star . . . he's so fast in the fall, but when November gets here, he's probably going to struggle for some weird reason that nobody ever actually explains. Yeah forget that 5-star -- we'd be better off taking that corn-fed slowboy 3-star -- he will somehow play good in November?"

This cold-weather football excuse makes no logical sense. Talent is talent, no matter what the temperature is.

I'm beginning to lose all hope that Michigan has a reasonable chance against the evil empire. I hope I'm overreacting.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Alabama will boat race Michigan and probaly win it all.

Actually middle of the road SEC teams tend to draw teams with a better record. Iowa lost in their conference championship game. We are 6th in the SEC?

BigNasty nailing it.

This year is a perfect example. Our teams are out playing all the top teams in the B10, plus the #2 team in the B12, and the #1 & #4 teams in the ACC.

We have 9 SEC teams in bowl games.

That means our #9 team took on the B10 #5/6. Our #8 team played the B12 #2. Our #7 played the ACC #4.

Near the top, it's usually pretty close. Our #1 vs their #1, our #2 vs their #1 or #2, and so on. But the lower in the SEC standings it gets, the bigger the imbalance.

SEC #1 plays B10 #1
SEC #2 played ACC #1
SEC #3 played B10 #2
SEC #4 played B10 #3
SEC #5 plays B10 #5/6
(this is where the balance starts to skew more widely)
SEC #6 plays B10 #4
SEC #7 played ACC #4
SEC #8 played B12 #2
SEC #9 played B10 #5/6

THAT is the reason the results tend to be as they have been thus far this bowl season. Our middle is just as good as, if not better than, other conferences' middles...but they're not playing other conferences' middles.

Go Vols!

I predict Tenn will try to win this game with a running attack/ground game with minimal passes by Nico. I think it will be run up the middle about the entire game. A low scoring affair and the team with the fewest turnovers/penalties will win.

Haha of course any team would take a talented 5* if he fits their program. I meant roster building/philosophy as a whole.

SEC loves their twitchy pass rushing ends. Agile Tackles, side line to side line LB’s and so on. They need to build their roster that way because of majority of offenses in the SEC.

In the Big Ten, you can have that super fast talented WR. When the weather gets crappy the number of balls thrown past 20 yards/ completion % both go down. The run % increases.

Thus you see rosters built more for a power run offenses instead. Even teams who run spread offenses (Minnesota,Nebraska under Frost are very downhill running power teams.

Instead of the vertical press the ball down the field spread teams such as Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Your LB/DL recruiting will fit that mold. You might see a cb with 4.3 speed but if he can’t tackle a cb with 4.5 speed who isn’t afraid to tackle is more likely to get the offer.

Interested in how Oregon/USC/UCLA do next year if they get November games in the upper MW. If they have success I think you see Big 10 teams start moving towards SEC offenses. Those teams struggle in Nov you will see them shifting to more Big 10 type offenses.

This can’t be right.
It’s already been proven by the 60-3 beat down of the skeleton of a FSU team by UGA that the committee was genius for ignoring everything but getting the BEST 4 teams in.
Bama beat UGA by 3.
The committee has spoken!
Michigan is better than UGA or they wouldn’t be in.
Therefore, absolutely best outcome Bama can hope for is a 2 point win.

I don't think so. For a few reasons:

(a) That would play into Iowa's hand, play to their strengths. A low-scoring slugfest is what they're good at. We don't want to play their game, we want to play ours.

(b) Our game has a lot of run plays, for sure, but our game uses spread formations and the ACTIVE THREAT of passes to open up the middle of the field for our runs. That's our game. Heupel will coach our lads to play OUR game.

(c) Nico's more ready than many here give him credit for. This is his second bowl game as a Volunteer. Yes, he was brand new to the team last December when we beat Clemson, but he's been absorbing like a sponge ever since, growing physically and mentally into his role. He's no noob. And I think we're gonna see that, emphatically, vs Iowa.

Expect a lopsided win for the Vols, with our score in the 30s and theirs somewhere either side of 10.

Go Vols!

When your conference is located within 2 of the 4 hottest recruiting beds in the country you probably are going to win more national titles than the other conference that is located in absolutely ZERO of the 4 . So for them to be the 2nd best conference in football is quite remarkable.
Florida, Ga, Texas, Cali . Now SEC is in 3 of them.
Texas will be at the level of Ala and Ga.
Oklahoma will be like LSU . Just a harder mountain for Tennessee to climb. Is what it is.

I hate Lane Kiffin. Would not wish anything good for that garbage human being. As usual, the one time I want Penn State to win, they start choking.

I hope Tennessee looks even better against Iowa, but inexperience at an and DB is likely to bite us against a very experienced Iowa team.
According to Hubbs and AP over at Volquest; there's not gonna be much drop off in the secondary.

I hope you're right, I'd rather see us play our game of uptempo air it out. My gut instinct says CJH is not going to put this game on the shoulders of Nico, based on a couple of reasons= Nico hasn't had a lot of game time, and not a lot of practice . Also, he hasn't had much faith or desire to put Nico in games this season, which says he hasn't shown him that much in practice. But I hope I'm wrong and he lets Nico rip.

Yea the Big Ten is pretty slow and plodding and Penn St didn’t beat anybody with a pulse and the two teams they lost to, I think Ole Miss could beat. I expect Bama will embarrass Michigan in much the same way.
Michigan score 31 on Ohio St., who shut Mizzou down. Mizzou finally mustered up 14 in the 4th qu.
