Manning to Kent on the 1st play was 95, not 96. And we didn't send the Tide home in tears. It was played at Bama.
Some of you may be old enough to remember.
It was January 1, 1986, in theNew Orleans,Louisiana Superdome. UT had shocked the Miami Hurricanes, and taken a 21-7 lead, early in the 3rd quarter. With the Hurricanes barely clinging to life, UT's OC called Johnny Major's favorite play, on 2nd and long. The Sprint Draw. Darryl Dickey took the snap, appearing to drop back to pass, then quickly handed the football to a little known track man, Jeff Powell. Powell, who was a transfer from William & Mary, took the hand off, and cut hard to his left, as Bruce Wilkinson ferried George Myra(Miami MLB) into Jerome Brown(Miami DT), effectively removing both All-American defenders from the play. Powell was through the gaping hole too fast for LB's to touch him, and into the open field, where he turned on the afterburners, and blew away 2 olympic sprinters, in Tolbert Bane and some guy named Blades. enroute to a 60 yard TD. I believe Keith Jackson called it like this. "This is Powell.....POWELL IS GONE!!!!! GOODBYE!!!!! TOUCHDOWN!!!!! I get chills up my back everytime I watch that play, and listen to Keith Jackson's call of it. That play effectively ended any thought of comeback for the Hurricanes. It was the proverbial dagger in the heart. It also announced to the entire NCAA that Tennessee is back!!!! I have never been so proud of a football team, in my life. They were too slow, too small, not deep enough.....you name it. But they were winners. That was the best defense I've ever seen at UT. That was a "TEAM". I'd put that team, and it's heart, against any team I've seen since. Including the NC team.
All those were great plays. one of my favorites is the 60 yard run by Jeff Powell against Miami in the "86" sugar bowl. It was the famous off left tackle, with a hole the size of a truck. He motored down the left side outrunning the famous bennie Blades, and hearing the tv analyst just rave about the speed and how he outran the "World class speed" of blades. The funniest part was watching our receiever ( who's name has escaped me) run by blades and escort Powell to the endzone. IT was awesome and a nail in the coffin of Miami that day.
One of the most enjoyable games I ever watched. We dominated them after Miami destroyed us on the first drive of the game.
My favoite quote from that gamKeith Jackson's call was sweet!! GOODBYE!!! TOUCHDOWN!! And almost as if he heard Jackson calling it, Powell's arm went up in the air with that No.1 sign. And Powell left that Hard-Hitting, speedy defense in the Dust. The 85 team is my all-time favorite team, should be a role model for every football team accross the country. They never quit, endured injury, and were what teams should be about. Those guys would battle for one another. No individualism, just team!!! Majors best coaching year IMO!!
I agree, aside from the NC game, the '86 sugar bowl is my favorite game. Didn't Dale Jones have a huge play too in that game that started the beat down? All those were great plays. one of my favorites is the 60 yard run by Jeff Powell against Miami in the "86" sugar bowl.
