Fiesta Bowl Game Thread: #2 Ohio St (13-0) vs #3 Clemson (13-0) (ESPN 8PM EST)

I was a doubter of Dabo for a while, but he is a coach kids will play for and if bama came calling, I think he would go. Especially if Gene Stallings asked him to go. It might sound silly and I'm probably way off but JMO. And if your interested, here's a video of the two doing an interview. Nice to see mentor and student talk about success and the respect they have for each other.

Yes, I see Dabo at Bammer within next couple of years.

The game has past Saban by.

As far as the title game...Clemson lost too many defensive horses to the NFL to slow LSU down. They'll have to win in a shootout. I think LSU wins by 13.
Agree, and maybe more. I don't think Clemson can out score lsu.

Back on topic, that game was a war.

Hard off to the great players on both teams that played hurt and still contributed.

Fields, Dobbins, and Okudah for OSU.
Higgins and Ross for CU.

Trevor Lawrence is amazingly tough, and he's obviously a much better runner that many people think.

Is a “hard off” the opposite of a “hard on”?

Why would he go? He can backslide some at Clemson and they will give him 5-10 years based on past equity, same as we did for Fulmer. If he goes to Bama and doesn't win championships almost from the jump, he's gonna get fired.

They would also be hiring him being much younger than Saban and expecting him to be better than Saban. Or he could just stay at the program he built and keep rolling out playoff bids year after year.

Yeah. Only way I see him leaving is if he gets the NFL itch or FSU gets off the mat.

And the ruling on the field was a catch and fumble. It is unusual to see such a close call overturned on review.

I thought they only called it that way so the play wouldn’t be dead. I’m typically going by NFL definitions, but I agree that the end zone “catch” where the ball came out on the ground and the “fumble” were both incomplete

I didn't get to watch the whole game, but did watch all of the 4th quarter. It looked like Venables called a blitz on every down. Is that how he called the whole game?

I'm not saying he should go if offered. As far as job security, you're absolutely right. Dabo could stay at Clemson for the next decade(approx) without another playoff run before they would fire him. I'm just of the opinion that if he were offered and certain people asked him to go, I think he'd go to bama. But again, I might be way off.

What about the ground can't cause a fumble and what if he'd stretched out at the goal breaking the plane before it comes loose? There are too many specialty rules IMH.

You have to complete the catch, through the process of going to the ground, and he didn’t. That’s really all it is

The “fumble” was easily incomplete to me
4 steps with control. If it had happened in the end zone it would have been called a touchdown. How many steps controlling the ball do you have to make for it to be considered a reception. For 50 years until the last 5 that play would have been considered a reception.

That wouldn’t have been a catch anywhere on the field, despite the false equivalence with the Higgins TD. Less about steps and more about the fact that he never came close to tucking the ball away.

You misunderstand the rules. You do not have to tuck the ball in to control the ball. The Higgins 2 point conversion was held in the hands and not tucked in. I have seen over the years receivers catching a ball in their hands and running for touchdowns with the ball clutched in their hands. The play in question was controlled in the hands for four steps. That was a catch. The referees blew the call.

This close game and being tested will help Clemson against LSU. Dabo will use that us against the world all week leading up to the game. I’ve said it all season Ive been super impressed with LSU but Coach O still isn’t a good coach he has got a whiz kid genius OC in Joe Brady and a generational player in the vein of Cam newton or Vince Young in Burrow. Dabo will outcoach him and Burrow will finally have a letdown game. O craps his pants in the biggest game. Clemson has been on this stage 4 times now in the last 5 years experience matters.
Looked liked Clemson was getting out coached several times last night, and without the help of the refs and a last play that the receiver made a bad decision on we would be talking O st now.
So if you’re counting on Joe B to have a bad game for Clemson to win , well good luck with that

You do have to make a football move, however, and he didn’t. Higgins tucked it away and stopped his momentum before it got knocked out. But sure, I and the replay officials all “misunderstand the rules” as opposed to the guy who keeps repeating the number of steps over and over and over
