File under: What are they thinking?

Having thought about it, I suppose you're right. They don't have to concern themselves at all about the general public's perception of systemic inequity.
The systemic equity senselessness aside, they are after people who are still loaded or are going to be soon. GS and MS are the mist reputable Wall St wire houses. They are after strengthening that grasp and making money for it. Paying huge bonuses is how GS will keep it's grip on the industry. They have the best Managing Directors and it will stay that way.

I don't hate liberals. I hate socialists. Which seem to encompass the vast majority of 'liberals' in the US...

Well the problem that lies within that is that there are those (like me) that realize socialism could only thrive within a completely ideal society (or at the very least, a highly homogenous one). Since we do not live in an ideal society, it renders the idea of socialism completely impractical. It's unfortunate that those of us who favor practicality are in the minority.

Although I do, to some extent, agree with hat's comments regarding companies, such as GM, reaping what they sow, so to speak.

Feel free to redistribute the wealth of commas in that sentence.

I love it that the grad of a school whose president is crying about how the football coach needs a raise to his multimillion dollar salary is preaching about "systemic inequity." Go piss up a rope.

Communism and Socialism both are meant for ideal societies in which human greed doesn't exist...

I don't understand the people who think this is a feasible economic system/government. Humans are greedy beings. We are out for ourselves (and our closest loved ones). It is ingrained in us.

They simply fail to realize that countries like Norway and Sweden, in which democratic forms of socialism have existed for decades, the populations are largely homogenous. Simply put, they think that because it can work on some level in other countries (and these are not exactly full on socialist countries) it can also exist here in a very diverse and traditionally capitalist society. We don't have that tribal collectivist background in the United States.

This is 100% accurate.

I was guilty of the same line of thinking for a time, however, one has to eventually come to terms with the less than ideal nature of society.

Not necessarily your fault. Many professors in universities still are that naive... which only helps to keep their students naive for that much longer.

Hell, most of the professors that I converse with regularly are in the same boat I am. Maybe they were a good influence, or maybe I just stopped smoking so much pot.

Entirely different scenario.

First, while the higher education system is facing budget difficulties like everything else, they weren't on the verge of bankruptcy at the begining of the year. No one is bitching that we've had to bail out UF (or UT), or that UF (or UT) have been blowing their money on multi-billion dollar bonus structures.

Second, no one is blaming UF (or UT) for nearly wrecking the world's economy based on their own avarice.

Third, no one owns stock or borrows venture capital from UF (or UT).

Any idiot trying to blame Goldman for nearly wrecking the world economy should enjoy their world of blissful ignorance.

The only people attempting to blame Goldman Sachs for the financial meltdown are the liberal trash who hate to see anyone make a buck. I could give a damn what the Jack Caffertys and Keith Olbermans of the world think. If I were GS, I'd use these bonuses to send a statement to the clowns trying to limit executive compensation: Go f*** Yourselves.

Who is doing that?

I'm just saying that in the current environment they are going to create a lot of resentment towards GS, and the investment banking industry on the whole, and even Wall Street on the whole, by saying that in the same year they got bailout money, they made a record profit and paid out record bonuses.

You might be right that they can afford the bonuses and generally are in a position to pay them. Its just not going to go over well.

Why do you see it in such black and white terms, and in such a vacuum of 10 pct unemployment, people's retirement funds wiped out, and foreclosure rates through the roof?

Its not "liberals hating anyone making a buck" -- its the fact that a lot of real suffering is going on and in the meantime you've got this bonus payout.

Stop with the inequity garbage. It's worthless collectivist drivel and makes no sense in our capitalist system. Haul your ass to Europe where more suscribe to your silliness. You won't like the tax bills, but you'll have some agreement about your equal economic outcomes drivel.

And you marvel that such a large number of people in this country support limits on these bonuses.

The number is lower than you want to let on and those people should essetially lose voting rights. Freedom means freedom, economically and otherwise. We are all equally free to fail or succeed I our system. Deal with it.

Because I'm sane and informed enough to know that the bonuses GS pays don't have the first thing to do with Jethro losing his house or Ellie Mae losing her job.

Even if I were to accept your premise, that doesn't mean many others will.
