Finally...Hyams speaks

Post this in another thread but thought it fit here as well. Just heard Jimmy "clueless" Hyams on the sports monster here in the tricities. He said to keep a watch on Stoops. He said he's not happy at Oklahoma, would be interested in coaching in the SEC and UT could get him for the same amount he's being paid now. He said the fans are not happy with him just getting to a BCS bowl and not winning and only winning 10 or 11 games a year. Apparently Stoops got into a 12 minute heated discussion with a fan on his call in show which clearly showed he's frustrated. He said Stoops has been there around 13 years now and that's a long time for a coach. That I'll agree with. Guess dumb Jimmy makes some good points but I'd have to see this one to believe it. I'd take Stoops in a heartbeat, don't get me wrong, but I would be shocked.

If Stoops is just posturing for a raise, which he very well could be. Then it's looking like it would come down to Jimbo Fisher, Charlie Strong and Al Golden. Of those 3, who would you choose?

Out of those 3 I would choose Jimbo Fisher in a heartbeat. Golden doesn't wow me, and until this year Strong hasn't been that great at Louisville. If you look at their schedule it is really weak. I'm not that sold on him either. He also got blown out by Syracuse.

I'm not rooting for Golden, but Hyams said he was told that a lot of people in the administration like him and think he would be a good fit. When you look at it from a realistic stand point, what successful coaches of big schools would leave where they are to coach at UT? Maybe Jimbo Fisher. Maybe Charlie Strong. Names like Stoops, Mora, Peterson, Kelly, and Shaw are all great coaches but probably won't leave where they are. Gruden is a big time long shot. So who does that leave?

The problem with that logic is that Golden has NOT been successful at a big school. He had better than decent success with a small MAC school. To me he has proven less than James Franklin at Vandy who at least competes in the best conference in the country. And I have said this many times but I will repeat that I am not for hiring Franklin either just making a comparison.

I'm not sure but I can definitely say it would be between Fisher and Strong with Golden a VERY distant third.

And there's the difference. You want to argue, I want to discuss. But I almost hope you get your late Fulmer clone, I mean Gruden as coach.

For the record, I believe his use of the word 'argument' was in the context one of these definitions:

a discussion involving differing points of view; debate: They were deeply involved in an argument about inflation.

a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point: This is a strong argument in favor of her theory.

It's kind of funny seeing/hearing some people totally fine with Butch Davis, but are adamantly against Bobby Petrino. Dealing with Butch Davis is 10x the deal with the devil that dealing with Petrino would ever be. Davis will return you to the Lane Kiffin era of bringing in thugs and piling on recruiting violations. You will see a marked increase in arrests, scandals, and NCAA investigations. If I'm Dave Hart I forget I even considered Butch Davis for the job. Petrino is just a scumbag of a person. He's a liar and he's someone that I would wager a recruits parents would not want their son playing for or even being around. I said in another thread that Petrino would be a guy that we should consider because of his record, but I don't think it's a sure thing he could rebuild UT like he did Arkansas or Louisville. This isn't the same as the last time he took over a college job. Pass on both.

Gruden is a homerun hire no matter what way you try to spin it. He brings the name recognition, he brings the NFL connections, he brings the coaching pedigree, and most importantly he will attract a good staff. You can spout all day about his average record in the NFL, but it's a completely different animal in college and NFL success is in no way a good measure of college coaching ability. If that were the case then Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Jim Mora, Pete Carroll, etc. would never have been considered for high profile jobs and wouldn't be having success in college. Some guys, just the way they coach, resonates better with college kids than NFL players.

The most important thing is to find a guy who knows the SEC and knows what it takes to win in the SEC. Guys like Cutcliffe and Strong have fielded winning units in the SEC, guys like Larry Fedora or Al Golden have not. You may say well Gruden has never been a coordinator or HC in the SEC so how would he know? He's an unknown, but the NFL mystique he would bring adds a different angle to his resume.

Any thought to trying to lure Mark Dantonio away from Michigan St.?

Welcome Hyams. Late as usual.

in his defense (for some reason), it wouldn't look too good to be talking about coaching candidates before Dooley was actually canned - especially when he has to meet with and interview Hart, Dooley, etc...
