Winning championships=increased revenues=more money for academics=higher professor salaries and better facilties= better academics.

This is a formula even the most devoted egghead should understand. It is sad that they don't.

Check out the UTAD budget over the past decade and a half and see how subsidized it has been by the state. Even during the good years, the state was pumping taxpayer money into the UTAD.

Only 14 FBS divisions schools have AD's that are self-sufficient; the other 106 (of which UT is a part) are sustained, to some degree, by taxpayer funds. That is money from the State that would otherwise be used for academics.

Yeah, the only reason Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Columbia have good academics is all their athletic championships.

Notre Dame and Vandy tied at 17th. Both ranked higher academically and both ranked higher in football. Your argument is what?

Bama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas A and M, ahead. Schools with higher academics can compete.

So, you think that higher academic standards and success on the football field are mutually exclusive? And, you would choose success on the football field over higher academic standards?

In your opinion, what is the purpose of the University of Tennessee?

The purpose of the University of Tennessee is to provide high school graduates a quality, pratical education that trains them for the "real world" instead of becoming some pointy-headed research university in order to be near the top of the rankings of some magazine that nobody reads.
In order to provide this quality education, the university need money. A huge chunk of this has come from a successful football program. In order to have a successful football program, incoming players in the SEC must be held to a lower academic standard than regular students. Is that fair? No. It's also not fair I don't own a condo in Hawaii, but hey - life sucks sometimes.
Is this true in all conferences? No. Tennessee would do just fine in the ACC, and with the current pointy-headed chancellor, I would welcome a move to that conference. But as long as we're stuck in the SEC, I don't care if a football player can't spell his own name. If he's a 4 or 5-star, get his arse over here. We need money pumped back into athletics and then it can come back to academics, especially with the tightwad Tennessee legislature that is now in place.

Incorrect. There is nothing in UT's mission statement that says anything about practical education or jobs.

Our primary mission is to move forward the frontiers of human knowledge and enrich and elevate the citizens of the state of Tennessee, the nation, and the world. As the preeminent research-based, land-grant university in the state, UT embodies the spirit of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, outreach, and engagement attained by the nation’s finest public research institutions.

Universities are not vocational tech programs. Undergraduate job placement is a second-order focus at universities.

Incorrect. The UTAD is subsidized and supported by the State and the University. The UTAD has rarely provided money to the academic side of the house, while the academic side of the house routinely provides money to the UTAD.

None of the rest of what you have written matters.

Wow. Check and mate.

azz cheeks has set a way too high entrance standard for our gravy train...football. Hell even Vandy has lowered its standards, Booger man wants us to be the Princeton of the south...not ever going to happen. We can not catch the big SEC dogs in recruiting in any mens sport with another sissy working the AD like Hamilton or Cheeks. I listen to Tony B's station on Saturday mornings. They speak plainly unlike the other shill stations. And they voiced this same comment. Higher standards than most SEC schools=less butts in seats and less money due to piss poor performance because you can not make an even playing field in recruiting/hire dollar tree coaches and give (not entitlement) $6 bigs a year to academia more than most schools in div I. CBJ has his hands tied somewhat because of this. I am not a Dr of sports management this is just what they said and IMHO only. Please discuss and peace.

It's good to see you have your priorities in order.

Apparently, chemical engineering doesn't teach punctuation. That and the kind of person that puts their GPA on a football forum has the credibility of my Golden Retriever.

Wouldn' suprise me if your Golden has more credibility :whistling:

Really? Most of UTAD's funding comes from the state and university? Whatever.

Once again, genius, the Republican Congress in this state is going to slash funding even more than it has already been slashed. We need all the financial support we can get. If that means lowering the standard for football players, so be it.

As for undergraduate education - maybe that attitude should change since MTSU is now the largest undergraduate university in the state. Before you go spouting off about that being the same in every other state, how come Florida, Georiga, etc. still have the largest undergraduate students in their respective states? That is an EMBARRASSMENT to be the flagship university in the state and be second in undgrad enrollment.

Sounds to me like you are a little Ivy wanna-be who is in full support of this stupid, wasteful endeavor to be Top 25 in Research in a magazine that nobody bothers to read. Admit it - you don't read it. I don't read it. Nobody gives a flying she-it about it. What exactly does being Top 25 in research mean? Does that mean we have the largest number of professors who sit on their arses in the library writing useless papers and letting their GAs go teach the class? Whoopee.

We're never going to be a Vandy. We're never going to be a UNC or Virginia. That has NEVER been our purpose, so don't go on here pretending like you know everything about this university. I went here. My family has went here from two generations back. You wanna have a pointy-headed institution (or at least attempt to have one), then fine. As long as we leave the SEC and join the ACC. Because, at this rate, our economy is going to suffer with the lack of attendance and the embarrassment of seeing a "tomb" during gameday will be great comedy for all of our rivals. And great for recruiting, I might add.

But - like I try to keep telling you all - the athletes are NOT held to the same standards!! You don't believe me I have two words for you - Channing Crowder.

Check mate.

and you are full of it.. And you are the south bound end of a north bound golden retriever

Cheeks should have been fired for academic shenanigans long ago. Athletics is just icing on the cake.
