I have this funny feeling it's less about Jackie Robinson and more about what metal it was made of. If it's brass, copper or bronze, someone is looking for a payday after breaking it up.

I've seen a two copper thiefs pick up a couple of hundred pounds of 600 MCM wire in less than a minute and get it stowed in a truck.

It was a hollow statue and the article said they used a truck. Looks like they probably went with a cutoff wheel and let it fall in the bed.

Regardless, that statue is probably ruined.

He was certainly pro-slavery. And he certainly preceded the Confederacy, which is what this whole statue removal charge was ostensibly about.

Removing statues of historically significant people is dumb. It only placates the offended temporarily and people learn nothing. About 7 million visitors walk through downtown Charleston every year. History is a big part of why people visit these cities. Why not leave the statues with a marquis telling the unabridged, unadulterated truth to include the good, the bad, the ugly, the indifferent, the accomplishments and the failures of the person. Instead, they send it off to collect dust in a museum that most of those visitors will never visit. I thought we wanted to educate people about history. Apparently not. Maybe I’m just a simpleton.
