‘23 FL OT Francis Mauigoa (Miami commit)

Everyone already knew that; but why act like Ruiz was not the major factor? Salave'a was there the whole time. He was at Oregon. Why didn't basil report that 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months ago? Meh.

I didn't exactly know it, but it goes further in-depth as to why FM picked them. It wasn't "just" about the money. As had been reported for several months, Cristobal and staff had been recruiting FM at Oregon, so he was familiar with that staff AND got paid. Some kids will take a little less from a school where they feel the most comfortable, and that's the smart way to go.

Interesting take/reporting from Basilio that I hadn't seen before on what decided this recruitment:

It would be easy to get on here today or on my show today and blame Tennessee's NIL turn as the reason Tennessee lost this well thought of prospect. It would also be lazy. Sure Miami has the NIL apparatus in full force and they're spending like drunken sailors, but identity played a part here as well.

I talked with a source at Tennessee last night and they feel like the pull of Miami assistant Joe Salave'a (Associate head coach/Run game coordinator/Defensive line coach) was just too strong to overcome. Salave'a is a Polynesian recruiting prince who was adroitly brought to The U by Mario Cristobal from Oregon. In Eugene, Salvae'a was extremely successful with players that share his nationality. Where I come from this is called identity and intelligent. It's a blow to the Vols for sure but not the end of the world. Perhaps Josh Heupel will consider finding his own Joe Salave'a if in fact he feels so inclined.

The Tony Basilio Show

FM’s relationship with Cristobal and Salave’a and Mirabel (OL coach) was a known factor if one did any research at all. Nobody here wanted to hear that tho and instead wanted to make it only about money. This includes AP. And apparently TB just learned of Salave’a’s existence lol.

247 article from July ‘21:

Mauigoa is a national recruit and blew past the double digit offer mark as a freshman. Oregon has always been high on Mauigoa’s list and he was able to take a visit back in June.

“I loved it there,” Mauigoa said. “It’s a big family at Oregon and they really take care of their players. The coaching staff is awesome and I was able to meet with coach Cristobal, coach Joe (Salave’a) and coach Mirabal and they’re all great guys.
“Oregon likes me as an offensive lineman and that’s fine with me. I see what they were able to do with Penei (Sewell) and I would love to follow in a similar path and be a top NFL Draft pick just like him. Oregon is all about putting in that work and if you do that, you’re going to be successful.”

247 article on his commitment:

“I’m very close with the Miami staff because I was close with them when they were at Oregon," Mauigoa said

A year ago at this time, Oregon looked like the leader for Mauigoa and that was largely because of his relationship with Cristobal and Mirabal

Mauigoa isn't going to Miami without Ruiz doing what he's doing
Yep. You know what’s “trendy and cool”? Cold hard cash.

I will say I can see a situation where this absolutely blows up though. You can’t just throw together the most talented with tons of money. Locker room chemistry is even more important than ever. Money exacerbates issues in and out of the locker room. You have a talented roster but you have a bunch of malcontents like Gainesville had last year, you get a roster that drastically underperforms their talent level. South beach is a magical place but an 18 yo that makes the wrong decisions can get into trouble fast, money is going to increase the opportunities for really bad decisions for these kids.

Who hurt you?
My ex wife mostly but that’s a long story. The IRS, Covid, telemarketers, JG Wentworth (that song is stuck in my frontal cortex), potato chip bags and the excessive air inside them, my drill sergeant, yoga instructor, my wife like all the time, my dog, my cat, my kids, the Vols, my proctologist. This isnt even close to an exhaustive list.

Yea I know they did but what’s to stop , Miami from paying 15 million or Southern Cal paying 20 million?? You see how quickly this whole thing has gotten out of hand and become a sh&@ show with no regulation.
Because he already signed his NIL rights away to Spyre for years...

So kids might flip? Yeah that’s something new that only came about due to NIL money. Never ever heard of that happening before. Never.

Idk. Depends on a lot outside of Miami honestly. If that SPAC deal blows up much more he could be in trouble
Good lord it's already down to $1.83 😶😶😶

So his ~20b in stock is down to about 3.5b and he and his partner just lent the company over 100mm to continue operations. They even warned continuing as a going concern was in "substantial" doubt. Good lord...

Hopefully all these Miami recruits are aware of how shaky the entire foundation is. Not to mention potentially ending up in a completely gutted league.

All this fuss over a good lineman, that may be able to play LT in college but projects as a guard. Seems recent memory reminds me of another 5*, can’t miss tackle that struggled to get playing time. Oh and he loved Mc Donald bags so much he took them to Oklahoma. Even with NIL, these players still must fit within the Heap culture. If he was bought by a Miami booster, then he will serve the master who bought him. UT Will be fine as it appears they are getting their fair share of high character, athletically gifted young men who love to play the game. One player won‘t make or break this class.

I am surprised the SEC is not after him. And I mean the one in Washington.

The last OL Miami had drafted was Danny Isidora (Guard; 2017 5th Round Vikings). Before that it was 2015 Erick Flowers and 2014 Seantrel Henderson (former #1 HS recruit and 7th Round draft pick).

All of this is to say that it’s no guarantee FM succeeds at the U. As some have said that is a lot of money to spend on an OL.

Brand new staff. Doesn’t matter who has been drafted except for historical purposes.

Still in better shape than a lot of spacs. Stock value may be down I’m not familiar with the particular company, if cash flow is good it may not matter as much. Also you would need to consider what the guys net worth was outside of that one company, I’m sure he’s somewhat diversified.
