Oh ok so you can just automatically judge someone’s character by what car they want. That makes total sense 🙄🙄.

So say you were a big time 5* recruit righ now. And you knew you could get a Lamborghini in today’s NIL landscape. Would you try and get one? And would you call that diva behavior?

I’m sorry but if I had a Lamborghini at 18 yo, I would be a diva as well. Some kids are making decisions based on up front perks. I can’t say this kid is wrong bc Texas has shown they’re an upcoming program much like we think Tennessee is. If he were going somewhere like Florida or another program that was a dumpster fire just bc of a Lamborghini I would have questions about that. Texas is a good program and he gets a dream car as a perk. That’s a pretty tough deal to pass up.

My take is simple, the staff’s cost vs value, including PROJECTED on field production and fit in the locker room indicates other paths are better for UT. It SEEMS to me that our QB room’s early peer recruiting of this guy fell off. Talent and POTENTIAL are not being challenged, but fit is fit and real value for the buck is too. It is possible different skill sets will work better here.

Big difference.... NFL rookies earned it. This kid has skill but he hasn't seen the level of talent he will see in College. Nothing about this guy screams Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss hell even MHjr. Those are the kind of guys you throw that kind of coin at. Texas can do as they wish. I trust our staff and Collective to make those decisions.

You make some valid points about not earning it. However it’s the NIL era now. Earning it has nothing to do with it. Guys like French are what teams like UGA and Bama get to win championships. Guess that’s not what you want.

How many of the high ranked guys they sign portal DOWN each year? Still a crapshoot, and each staff has to do an NIL ROI calculation. Retention probability and cost is a key now too. Not a question of if he and others have tools. We are not in the situation those schools are where you can handle a yield situation with several elite each year. We better have a fit comfort before we trigger big deals. You can’t buy synergy.

My question would be why a Lambo? Why not a house with a pool on like a modest 5 acres, with maybe a basketball court ( or in my preference a gun range? ) for the price of a Lambo that could be achieved I think, and always a place to call home or give to parents. The Football thing could always not pan out. Also I'd imagine it's hard to live in a 3/4 million sports car.

Why does it seem like other programs like OSU can buy synergy every year? Every year they sign 5* WR after 5* WR. I guess they can just create synergy with any WR huh? And why aren’t we in the same situation as the other big dogs? Give me the reasons.

You talk about retention. How many 5* WRs does OSU lose every year? Recruiting as a whole is a total crapshoot. That’s nothing new. But when you look at the teams that win big and I am talking about national championships, they have the list 5* players usually. Sure there are outliers but that’s not the rule.

Fact is in today’s crappy college football, you gotta pay to get the best players. Wanna win a national title? You gotta pay guys like French. Just hoping that the lower ranked guys you take play way above their suggested ranking every year isn’t gonna win a title.

I totally agree, BOT...... But there is more to it than just NIL.... Team chemistry, culture, coach preferences, etc., We have all that but it's not quite where it needs to be yet.

Good post and no one wants to talk about this in the main forum... We are getting some elite kids which is great, but if we want to truly get to the next level and stay there, we are going to have to get a lot more elite players and now that means paying them. Last season and this upcoming season we are hoping to do more with less again at certain positions. With the elite QB's we have in house and that are on the way, 5* WR's should be lining up, but they're not. We need this on the defensive side of the ball as well. When was the last time we got a 5* DT and LB in the same cycle? We need the Sammy Brown type kids...

Valid question. And the answer, I believe, is that they see Ohio State putting WRs in the NFL at an unmatched level. They're not just putting them in the NFL, but they're getting them drafted highly and they're successful in the NFL. We're seeing it with UT baseball now...Tennessee can get guys from the portal without breaking the bank in NIL because guys see Vitello developing and putting dudes in the pros. That's worth a lot more than NIL. We also just saw this with Chaz Lanier...it was widely reported that UT had the 3rd highest offer on the table behind BYU and UK. But Lanier wanted to be developed by Barnes, the way Knecht was.

Heupel needs to keep developing the guys he gets and putting them into the League. I think he will and he'll be rewarded with greater talent acquisition.

You can lease a Lambo on the top end for like 7k a month with a service contract. You can get one as low as 2-3k per month. Doing that for four years is much, much cheaper than a 750k house and the athlete still needs cash to pay the taxes anyways.

Vitello hasn’t had a class ranked outside 9th nationally while at Tennessee, most of which top 6 nationally. All the way back to when he started. Same with Buckeyes and their change of approach on offense with Ryan Day vs Urban Meyer. It certainly helps you can get these 5 stars drafted highly but you gotta reel them in.
