I really don't view the situations as similar because of the wave of portal changes, NIL, and the early NFL exodus. All but the latter didn't exist years ago, in any measure.
What we saw yesterday is emblematic of everything that's wrong with college football and it's not unique to UF.
Every time college football changes, some elements--usually those being left behind--conclude that it's all going wrong, the sport is broken, and everyone's suffering.
But that's never true.
Some programs adjust well, and quickly, and get ahead. Others are about average. And then there are those who complain that it's all going wrong.
For them it is.
I feel for you guys. Being a 6-6 team pitted against a 9-3 squad, that seemed unfair from the day the bowls were announced. The Gators were over-matched. Even with the "SEC versus PAC adjustment." Your AD should have been complaining through the entire matchmaking process.
On the other hand, it wasn't such a big mis-match that it would explain a 30-point embarrassment. That result argues that there was also a serious lack of leadership. Both the coaches and the upperclass players laid an egg in that regard.
Sure, it can be hard to get psyched for a minor bowl game. But self-pride and program pride alone should be enough to get a team up better than the gators were yesterday. That was ugly.
So are there similarities between the Vols' dark ages and what's going on at Florida these days? Sure. Like the bad leadership. College football has evolved a lot off-field in the last three seasons, but things like values and leadership are eternal.
I hope you get better soon. I want our lads to continue whupping your lads for years and years to come, I want us to establish the new longest streak in the rivalry, but I still want the gators to be a competent, capable program. Today, you are not that.
Good luck.
