Another opinion of the Varsity. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Seriously, the absolute worst food I've ever had the displeasure of consuming. Considered an Atlanta institution, more like institutional food!  :sick:If you're in need of a good "cleansing" meal, I highly recommend the Varsity on North Avenue. Orange soda, chili dogs, onion rings, and fried pies will get you where you need to go in a hurry!
In seriousness, what type of food do you like and what's your budget?
Why did you think I referred to it as "cleansing?"Another opinion of the Varsity. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Seriously, the absolute worst food I've ever had the displeasure of consuming. Considered an Atlanta institution, more like institutional food!
BluePointe is a favorite of mine ... so is Canoe ... but for the ultimate in dining experiences, check out:Some of my favorites around town are:
Bluepointe (Buckhead)
Bluepointe - Atlanta, GA, 30305 - Citysearch
For the best steak in town try New York Prime in Buckhead
New York Prime - Atlanta, GA, 30326-1118 - Citysearch
If dining in Buckhead and want cocktails beforehand or for great sushi try TWIST
Twist - Atlanta, GA, 30326-1222 - Citysearch
For Italian try Maggianos. Several locations
Maggiano's Little Italy - Atlanta, GA, 30326-1008 - Citysearch
For burgers and beers Max Lagers is the Bomb!
Max Lager's American Grill & Brewery
If you want a sportsbar type setting, try Jocks and Jills (several locations)
Jocks & Jills Sports Grill Site Home Page
btw there is an ESPN Zone with lots of games and tv's, but the food is terrible and overpriced.
The Atlanta area has something for everyone. If you are in a bad part of town (every city has them) it will be pretty obvious. Still, you will be safe walking around at night and wont have to worry about safety. Enjoy our city!
Where or what are the restaurants and bars (the good one's I mean) downtown? I don't prefer Buckhead.
Part of the sirens' call of the Varsity is that a lot of people, me included, were introduced to it in the days of our youth when a good iron stomach allowed you to tear down a few chili dogs and an order of O-rings with no ill side effects. Now that I'm older it gives me stomach cramps but somehow when I'm making that split second decision whether to exit on 75 I suddenly forget the pain of my last couple of visits and I can only remember the good times of yesteryear. And to that I agree! Seriously, it amazes me that some people actually like the food there. What passes for a hot dog some people would call a vienna sausage!

Also, it still amazes me that I never see anyone else mention McKinnon's whenever these threads about ATL restaurants pop up. It's been in Buckhead for 35 years, which should qualify as a historic landmark by ATL standards.
Also, since we are talking about places that tourists might want to go I'm curious about the current reputation of Pittypat's Porch? I have not been there since the early 1980s. I seem to recall hearing bad things about it in the 90s but I have not heard anything since.
Do you perhaps mean the Bucket Shop, in a Buckhead office building? It's still there, right up the street from me. It's an Auburn bar, at least during football season. Very much a neighborhood pub.
Concerts at Chastain are much fun. Not cheap, and not really the best place to actually hear a concert -- people have an annoying tendency to talk the whole time -- but definitely a great way to spend a summer evening.
The brewhouse is good in Lil 5 and There is a Vortex there
For real though. If you want a "hidden gem", I'd suggest getting a burger at The Earl in East Atlanta. It's easily the best burger in town. (THE EARL)
For barbecue, I'd suggest Daddy D'z (Daddy D'z BBQ Joint).
For sushi, go to MF. (MF Sushi Restaurant Bar, Midtown, Atlanta)
For French, try Anis (Anis Cafe & Bistro).
For margaritas and new Mexican, go to Sala (Sala - Sabor de Mexico Restaurant).
For pizza and drinks, try Fritti (Fritti Restaurant).
For a good pub with a cheap burger, either Moe's & Joe's (Moe's & Joe's - Atlanta, GA) or the Righteous Room (Righteous Room).
