I don't doubt this one because he was chewing Helton two new asses right before the half against KY..... it looked like some serious dislike was involved
Good postMore on this later, but in retrospect I think CJP and this staff had a decision to make back in the spring. They could (a) install the power-running game, play-action pass offense that they ultimately intended to run here (and take their lumps in the process), or (b) just run something that would take best advantage of a known weak OL, limited skill set QB, and talented but unproven WR's. They took the long view, chose "Option A", and the rest is history. I think Helton fits what Pruitt is looking for, long-term, in an OC. Pruitt knows, as does Helton, that a 17 point offense isn't going to win many games in the SEC. I'm confident that neither one of them is content with the offense. But they made a choice, stuck with it, and will likely stay the course at least through 2019. Again, Pruitt is taking the long view here.
We'll see what recruiting, player development, and a full year in this system does for the 2019 offense, but safe to say that the critical areas of improvement are OL depth and physicality; competition at the QB position (JG might be our best QB, but he's not a top-tier SEC QB); a breakout RB; a ballhawk at TE; and at least one vertical threat at WR. The thing is, 3 of those 5 might already be on the roster. Improved OL play, and improved QB play could see this offense easily double its' PPG numbers in 2019. Once...if...this offense starts chewing up yards and clock, that will go a long ways towards allowing this defense to adopt the physical, aggressive, attacking style that Pruitt prefers. As we've seen, even a decent defense quickly wears down at this level when the offense can't string together drives. In UT's case, the offense must improve first. Even a better defense (which we will have next year) cannot make up for an offense that ranks in the bottom third in the rankings.
As goes the 2019 OL and QB play, so too will go the Vols 2019 football fortunes. The rest of the ingredients are already in the pantry. Personally, don't be too surprised if a new name emerges at the QB position in the Spring / Fall. JG is a gamer, and has a big league arm, but he has a maddening habit of holding on to the ball too long. If he doesn't fix that, don't be surprised if Helton opts for a young gun with a quick release. Just saying; wait and see.
Either way, gonna be a long 9+ months until the first "real" look at the 2019 Vols on September 7th. And then we'll find out on September 21st if this is a team that can take the fight to a quality opponent on their field. So, until then...
Go Vols.

I just don’t see how you can judge Pruitt on much that happened this year. Yes there are some concerns and yes there were some good moments. Next year he will have his first real recruiting class and have a full season of experience as a HC and with all of the returning players. I expect to see massive improvement in the mental part of the game. Does that mean we will go 10-2 next year? No, 6 or 7 wins is likely as he will probably need 2 full classes to truly start to change this team and show big improvement on the field. We have to wait and see what happens. I’m not saying Pruitt is for sure the guy but we certainly don’t know that he isn’t at this point.I'm not going to say much about this child like reaction from our fans but I will say this....before the game I had a bite to eat with a VERY HIGH LEVEL sports administrator within the UT system and this were his exact words to me..."I'm worried a little about this game because where we are and how all the circumstances set up for a Vandy win and how the fans overreacted to the Auburn and Kentucky wins (HUGE WINS by the way) it will be a long off season and some will have no ability to put this in perspective"....AND THAT COMMENT WAS MADE TO ME AROUND 1:00pm over a burger before the first snap was made....I suspect we will see all kinds of threads here declaring everything including Armageddon...I may take a LONG break from Volnation or at least the football forum at least...

I would be more worried about the o line development than Helton. He doesn't have who he wants for personal. Not saying he will be good or not. But the o line is way more of a concern for me. Although he did have some questionable play calls.

Yeah but in no way can you ever count Florida as a win. I’m thinking 7-5 right now. That’s 4-2 against SC, Mizzou, Vandy, KY, Miss St, and BYU. That seems doable, albeit tough based on what we saw this year. I truly hope you are right but UF may only take a small step back depending on how many people leave early. With the schedule next year and the heavy turnover of starters for 6 of the teams we play (Kentucky, Florida, Vandy, Mizzou, MissSt, SCAR), I strongly feel that 8 wins will be the floor next year. OOC games are very winnable with BYU and UAB being the toughest of the four.
