For those that hate 3 star recruits....

Sort of like Nukeese, Da' Rick, and Bryce Brown. They all were "sure things" alright.

Should we start listing all the 3 star players that end up a total waste of a scholarship.......I think not. Not enough room on this page

Three questions were put to John Chavis:
Q1: John, how many 3* players turn out to be really good.
John: About 50% of them.
Q2: How many 4* players?
John: About the same, 50%.
Q3: How many 5*?
John: Umm, about 1 in 2.

Most 5 star players are considered a bust when they end up playing like a 3 star guy.

Now Mods please don't move this to the Recruiting Forum I work hard on this and I want all of VN to see it....

I want to say that the following are Heisman winners and contenders: Collen Klien, Steve Slaton, Mike Hart, Colt Brennan, Chase Daniels, Toby Gerhart, Kellen Moore, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram, and Johnny Manziel were all 3 stars or lower. Also to point out that there have only been 3 5 star players (McFadden, T. Richardson, and Tebow) to make it as finalist and only one of them was named winner(Tebow) since 2006.

I wanted to say this is because we had a commitment from a 3 star recruit today. Of Course some of the fans weren't ecstatic about the pick up. I just wanted to shed a little light on the 3 star worries. Three star recruits have been in more Heisman voting than Four stars and Five Stars.

This goes to show that its not about the level of talent that you pull in its about how the recruit fits your system. You also need the coach and staff to coach them to another level to make them play like 5 star and 4 star recruits. For every 4 star and 5 star commits that lives up to its potential, you can name a bust that didn't.

Lets Stay bUTch Strong guys. We are going to bring this program from the dead Go F******* Vols!!!!

I rarely post, but think this is a comment we need to heed as we move in the recruiting season. Most everyone on here seems to think stars relate to whether a player will be any good or not. In reality, star ratings relate to how quickly a player should contribute. A 4 or 5 star should be able to play significant meaningful minutes as a freshman or sophmore,. A 3 star usually would not give significant minutes until they are upperclassmen. It is always nice to have guys that can play immediately, but if you have a consistent roster of upper-class and frosh/sophomores you can let the 3 star guys mature.. This was always a topic of discussion when CPF. Rarely started a freshmen regardless of stars. If the VOLS can ever get some consistency in their roster, things will look quite a bit different.

No I'm not. It's another thread trying to convince us that 3 star are as good as 5 stars and it's just not the case 90% of the time

Not the point of the thread my friend... Its about never counting a recruit out just because he doesn't have a certain amount of stars. I never said that 3*s were just as good as 5*s. Its about coaching mainly and Dooley obviously wasn't cut out for the job and I feel that Butch Jones can coach up those 3*s.

Since there are a lot more 3 star players than 4 and 5 stars, obviously there will be more busts as far as numbers go. However, about half the 3 star players become very productive college players while the same ( about half) of the 4 and 5 star players become productive as well. So, while you may be able to name several 3 star busts, I will be able to show you just as many busts that were 4 and 5 stars as percentages go..

nobody hates 3 star recruits

4 and 5 star are just more of a sure thing

that's all bye

Sure thing at what? Bryce Brown, Davante Bourque, Richard Samuel - 5 star RB, has been moved to LB

Zach Mettenberger - 4 star QB, booted by UGA, now with LSU

Logan Gray - 4 star QB, couldn't make it as a starter, moved to WR, transfering to a school back in his home state of Missouri
Albert means, Enrique Davis 5star RB, has just been an utter disappointment. On and on and on. Guess these guys were all guarantee's!

Wrong!!

The difference between a 5* and a 3* is someones opinion. Since 2000 or so of all the projected 4 and 5* D-lineman according to Rivals.com only a few out of the estimated 100 during that span have panned out and made it to the pros. Either they can play or not and that's the coaches talent search. Miami and coach Shannon said they relied way to much on Rival's rankings rather than doing there on talent analysis and he said that is what ultimately cost him his job!

Give me a 2* with heart and desire and passion to win for the school and I'll take him over a 5* love myself any day of the week!

great get today and welcome Lemond to Vol Country!

Ingram was a 4star. In the SEC you need to majority of your class to be 4 and 5 stars if you want to compete. If this was the WAC, ACC, Big12, Big East, 3stars would be acceptable.

It's pretty simple. There are WAY too many fans across the nation that get caught up in the star gazing game. They fail to realize that recruiting services make big bucks off of this drama. I can assure you no one evluates players closer than coaches. Their jobs and the success of their programs depend on accurate assessments and player development. The reality is there simply is not a lot of difference between a 3,4, or 5 star athelete. Star gazers don't want to hear that. I promise you..."3 star" players are still STUDS. Personally I put more trust in a coaches evaluation of a player over anything a "recruiting service" has to say. One last point.....a lot of these "star" rankings depend on exposure as well.

I don't give a damn about what any 3* recruit has done in the Heisman race, all I care about is what any recruit has done to help the football team at TN win ballgames.

Right now the fact is TN is not getting enough of the better players to compete in the SEC and that has to change.

All I know is on average it appears that the programs that have the higher rated recruiting classes year end and year out usually are also the highest rated football teams at the end of each season. Seems to be a connection between the two and we need to find what that connection is and start winning that battle.
