For those that hate 3 star recruits....

I understand this assumption, but take Oregon for example. They've had great success lately...yet this year's recruiting class is ranked like 48th in the nation. Personally that doesn't mean "jack" to me because I know how they are going to develop those players. Ultimately that's what matters.....player development!
Bogus comparison.

Oregon has relatively few players committed at this point. They've finished in the top 20 each of the previous 3 years, and will finish very high when all is said and done.

Funny thing is, I didn't see vandy, usce, or tamu playing for the SEC championship. Atlanta should be the goal for every season. I want to go back to Atlanta.

Check their schedules and check Georgia's...I really dont care either way but these "discussions" can go back and forth...back and forth.....no real winners here!

The goofballs eager to excuse a mediocre recruiting class don't get this.

I think we ALL get it..its just the approach that's different....obviously there are plenty of extremely successful 3*'s...not debatable...but until we consistently land the 4 and 5*'s....we'll labor with success hopefully with mostly 3*'s which again obviously can be done.....now lets move on to something that really matters....

How many 3 star recruits do Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Florida have? I'm behind every volunteer, but its not difficult to see what happens when you are rated behind your competition in terms of recruiting classes. We are not beating these teams....period. I'm sorry. It sucks, but if we are going to win then CBJ needs to sign top 10- 15 classes starting NEXT year.

Truth. Until we start getting recruiting classes that are at least being ranked on a par with the upper echelon in this conference there will be no improvement. Sorry, but classes loaded with 3-star talent alone will not take UT where it wants to be.

i don't mind the 3 stars but we have to have some 4 and 5 stars to go with them.good coaches can make a good 3 star a 5 star with work.most of the time 3 stars don't come in and start right away.they can come in and start but it isn't the norm.

Now Mods please don't move this to the Recruiting Forum I work hard on this and I want all of VN to see it....

I want to say that the following are Heisman winners and contenders: Collen Klien, Steve Slaton, Mike Hart, Colt Brennan, Chase Daniels, Toby Gerhart, Kellen Moore, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram, and Johnny Manziel were all 3 stars or lower. Also to point out that there have only been 3 5 star players (McFadden, T. Richardson, and Tebow) to make it as finalist and only one of them was named winner(Tebow) since 2006.

I wanted to say this is because we had a commitment from a 3 star recruit today. Of Course some of the fans weren't ecstatic about the pick up. I just wanted to shed a little light on the 3 star worries. Three star recruits have been in more Heisman voting than Four stars and Five Stars.

This goes to show that its not about the level of talent that you pull in its about how the recruit fits your system. You also need the coach and staff to coach them to another level to make them play like 5 star and 4 star recruits. For every 4 star and 5 star commits that lives up to its potential, you can name a bust that didn't.

Lets Stay bUTch Strong guys. We are going to bring this program from the dead Go F******* Vols!!!!

Anyone who doesn't see the value of 3 Star Recruits has had his perspective warped by playing too much xbox

Ah, yes, the typical "3 stars are just as good as 5 stars" argument, right on time. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess.

I guess these threads are the off-season equivalent of "Well, we just got beat by Miss State, but I've got a good feeling about the Alabama game..." threads we get during the season.

Nobody hates the 3 stars but lets see you compete at the top level of the SEC witth a boatload of 3 stars. Not going to happen. You must have several 4s or 5s at the skilled positions.Of course DD never coached anybody up so we all are pretty confused.

Look at Alabama, LSU, Georiga, Florida....are their starters mainly 3*'s or 4-5*'s? I think you need a good balance of 5* and 3* but the main core of your team better be 4* to compete at a high level in the SEC. Yesterday's commitment is a 3.9* by the way.

What we need are 4 or 5 big play makers and more several 3 star role players to learn the system and lay the foundation. If CBJ can pull it off starting with this class then the future is bright.

And how many times did Phil Fulmer get his tail-end kicked by lesser teams with top-10 recruiting classes full of 4 and 5 star recruits? Plenty!

It's all about coaching. You can't teach speed and you can't teach height ... everything else you can teach. The best teachers win much more often than the best recruits do. Mediocre coaching can turn a 5-star recruit into a turd in a hurry, and excellent coaching can turn a 3-star diamond in the rough into a special football player.

There are also 15 times more 3* than 5* players and were talking about one trophy which is completely media driven look at percent chances of nfl or all american if u want an actual evaluation

Guys please stop the one upmanship. I'm a genius (just ask me) and your an idiot. Happy to be just an not so smart fan. We are sharing our thoughts, this is not a competition. I personally would be shocked of coach jones got a 10-15 recruiting class, given he just came from cinncinati. Not Notre Dame, nothing against him, I like his enthusiasm and intensity! Not that there isn't talent in those conf. Big Ben, Jerry Rice, Randy Moss. Look at our schedule next year vs quality long term coaches and recruiters. If we could get a win against any of all the power houses we play next yr. It would be a success, just my thoughts

Saying that you should have several 3 star "to learn the system and lay the foundation???? What the the hell??? Really??? So you nucleus will be 3 star players???

The fact of the matter is that if Tennessee wants to be relevant they will need to sign top 10 recruiting classes each and every year (especially if you want to beat Bama, Florida, Ga, LSU, S Caro consistently).

If a program is setting its sights on SEC Champs and Natl Champs, the program will never get there without knocking down top 10 recruiting classes year-in, year-out with a top 5 thrown in every 3 or 4 years!!!!!!

Good info and thanks for posting it.

Based on the top 50 NFL draft picks only 40% came out of high school with a 4* or 5* star rating.

Based on that same info that means that 60% of the top 50 draft picks were either lowly 3*, 2* or totally unrated players coming out of high school which is fully 20% MORE low ranked kids that made it to the top 50 NFL draft picks.

People on here will argue both sides forever but many 4* and 5* kids become a total bust or have a bad attitude and are lazy and think they know it all as we've seen many times on our own Vols roster.

Many 3* kids are highly motivated, take coaches teaching much better, work alot harder and progress like they should based on their abilities.

We should NEVER ever belittle or bash any kid that wants to come play at Tennessee even if they're a 2* or even unrated by a silly service that gets paid for their personal opinion.

Thousands of kids never even get rated every year but some of them are really good football players.

How many teams WON over laMe kiffScum and the high ranked recruiting classes that USC brings in every year and were teams with a much lower recruiting ranking?

Exactly what I thought folks.

The start systen and ranking recruiting classes was made up for 2 main reasons...

1...To keep football fans more interested during the offseason.

2...To make lots more $$$$.

Also remember that big programs that WIN alot also get more top recruits so it's losts harder for a program like our Vols to get top recruits to even talk to us unless they can be guaranteed to either start or to play lots of snaps as a freshman and that offer can only last for so long as we get better and better players and start winning more games again.

Being realistic isn't somethinmg that's done alot on the norm on VN unfortunately.

I'll trust our coaches to bring in the best players they can get that will fit our needs and the systems our coaches plan to run.

VFL...GBO!!!
