For those that hate 3 star recruits....

All I know is on average it appears that the programs that have the higher rated recruiting classes year end and year out usually are also the highest rated football teams at the end of each season. Seems to be a connection between the two and we need to find what that connection is and start winning that battle.

and.......... vice versa

I understand this assumption, but take Oregon for example. They've had great success lately...yet this year's recruiting class is ranked like 48th in the nation. Personally that doesn't mean "jack" to me because I know how they are going to develop those players. Ultimately that's what matters.....player development!

So far this is an argument that has no conclusions.

You can't get all hyped about getting top rated recruits and not expect people to point out when you don't get top rated recruits.

Per 24/7 composite he is the #80 ranked player in FL. He is the #31 safety in the nation. That is not overly exciting unless they can develop him into somebody that is. The facts are the rosters with the higher rated players with competent coaching staffs win more than those that have lower rated players and/or less competent staffs. Simple A + B = C stuff to understand.

Which is why things will not be where we want them to be with a recruiting class currently ranked by Rivals after the Johnson addition at #38. That will not win any championships. Book it. It gets you new coaching staffs every 3 years. Book it. It better change very soon.

Now Mods please don't move this to the Recruiting Forum I work hard on this and I want all of VN to see it....

I want to say that the following are Heisman winners and contenders: Collen Klien, Steve Slaton, Mike Hart, Colt Brennan, Chase Daniels, Toby Gerhart, Kellen Moore, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram, and Johnny Manziel were all 3 stars or lower. Also to point out that there have only been 3 5 star players (McFadden, T. Richardson, and Tebow) to make it as finalist and only one of them was named winner(Tebow) since 2006.

I wanted to say this is because we had a commitment from a 3 star recruit today. Of Course some of the fans weren't ecstatic about the pick up. I just wanted to shed a little light on the 3 star worries. Three star recruits have been in more Heisman voting than Four stars and Five Stars.

This goes to show that its not about the level of talent that you pull in its about how the recruit fits your system. You also need the coach and staff to coach them to another level to make them play like 5 star and 4 star recruits. For every 4 star and 5 star commits that lives up to its potential, you can name a bust that didn't.

Lets Stay bUTch Strong guys. We are going to bring this program from the dead Go F******* Vols!!!!

I dont even look at 'stars' I look at offers. An offer is an endorsement by a staff of experts willing to give a kid a valuable scholly and a valuable spot on a roster. Stars are speculations by 'websites' or 'guides' ..they dont have to pay anything to offer their opinion.

The fella we got today has some pretty impressive offers.

Your facts are wrong how do you explain K-State, Oregon, USC, Michigan, Washington, and Auburn?

How come no one has mentioned the fact that players get down graded and up graded sometimes depending on the school they commit to. Have seen it happen on numerous occasions.

If you want to get an idea of how well a recruit is thought of look at his offers. The bottom line is you evaluate a player and decide if he can be a productive SEC player. If you think he can then you offer him. The real work begins when you get him on campus. The verbal we got today is a EE I think, so he is a solid 3* that can start in Jan. He was a good pick up, and we should be happy. There is nothing wrong with 3 star guys, but like a previous poster wrote they are less of a sure thing.

I think it's time...for us...to stop complaining...and start a scouting website. GO OUT and evaluate the talent that is recruited and then come back and post...

ALL OF US...

Compare the number of three star prospects to the number of four and five star prospects. This has been proven a dumb premise in the past on numerous occasions. Look at BCS champions and recruiting rankings. There are good three star prospects to be sure but the success ratio is much lower.

Mods, move to the recruiting forum:)

This is a logical post. It is not logical to name five people out of the thousands of three star athletes and imply three star players are better bets than four and five star players.

I don't hate any recruits. If they want to come and strap on the power T and play for the school that I support I will support them. From the walk ons to the starters if you wear Tennessee orange you have my support.

Wonder what recruiting did before they had stars beside their names??? You know coaches could care less about stars right?? That just gives sportwriters jobs that a select few only really know anything about anyway, stars don't mean crap look at what goes into the NFL every year and tell me about them stars!!!!

Nice post! New England Patriots would be a fine example, I wonder how many 5 stars are on that team!? I know it is an NFL team but to break it down even further or more in depth to goals of the kids today, it would be interesting to see the ratio of 2 stars to 5 stars that make it to the next level.

When Tennessee was at their best in the 90s and early 2000s, it was because 4 and 5 star recruits were the backbone of the team, not 3 star guys. The diamond in the rough argument gets old. The whole team cannot be diamonds in the rough.

PS didn't we do this with Dooley already?

The star system is the same of other walks of life. It is just a scale.( Hospitals, Stocks, Resturants, etc. Generally, if something have proven itself against similar competition its get a higher rating.

There is a reason why some guys are 3 stars and not 4 or 5 stars. Check out our defense lately and you will notice we have 3 star guys all over the field ........and they can't catch a single wr or rb in the sec from behind.

And the line was loaded with 4 & 5 star.
