This is pure marketing.
His image is shot and he's mad at Hamilton.
So he does that, the fan base sighs and wishes he hadn't been fired, then the fan base turns on UT's Administration and support for Coach Zo is minimal.
Go away Bruce! Enjoyed while you were here but go away now!

Imagine how he's going to contrive to get himself in the news this fall if Martni's team starts off slow.

I asked my wife why Pearl gets so much hate. I told her He cryed on tv, and now is serving the homeless. She looked at me and asked, Do you still think wrestlin is real? I don't get it.

How do you see that this will change support for coach martin? Pretty much nonsense in my mind. People have already decided whether they choose to support him or not at this point. Dipping baked beans isnt gonna change that only wins and loses will.

He could donate a chunk of that 1 mil buyout he shouldn't have to the shelter. That may help a bit more

As someone who was worked with the ministry before, it's good to see it get some publicity. If you ever are looking for volunteer work, it's a great place to start.

As someone who is in ministry now, I agree. However, some see this is a shameful PR opportunity. May be the case, may not be. It can appear that way.

Not trying to sound like a jerk about this, I am just amazed at the way people swoon over this guy. The comments section of the KNS article about this is embarrassing. "Poor Bruce treated so poorly by UT yet turns other cheek". People acting like him serving food at a shelter somehow means he should be the coach still, or has an infinite love for Knoxville or UT for signing "Go Vols". People are treating him like a victim or hero after him being fired. I just don't see it. I applaud anyone doing a gesture like this, but why so much attention for this? Doesn't make him a hero. I am more amazed at the people who make $25k a year and spend valuable time and resources helping the less fortunate on a regular basis. Again, not trying to sound like a jerk about it, I just think the majority of fans have bought in a little too much to this guy.

Press coverage = PR event. It's pretty simple. If they got a TV camera down there in time to film it, then that was the goal.

Tend to agree, as stated in my first post on this thread, just trying to at least give benefit of doubt

I might be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if he hadn't demonstrated in the past so conclusively that the maudlin grand gesture is a big part of his marketing arsenal. At some point you just start rolling your eyes.

Gotcha. Like I said at beginning of thread, I see it same way. I was addressing another poster's comment about the ministry getting PR, and presenting 2 ways people could see this.

Just because it's a naked PR gesture by Pearl doesn't mean that it doesn't help the ministry too. It's still a good thing.

I hope he wrote them a nice check while he was down there, though.

So true...but then again one is an ex o-lineman and the other a ex db.

Fulmer wasn't a very big offensive lineman. By today's standards, he wasn't much bigger than big runningbacks

Fulmer gained 50-75 lbs while he was head coach. Look at pictures of Fulmer in 1993 vs 2001. HUGE difference

The man tried everything in his power to stay coach at Tennessee, even allowing them to tear up his contract. He does alot of charity events that was not in the news and was a huge supporter of everything Tennessee.

On the basketball side, he gave me the most exciting six yrs of Tenn basketball that I have experienced. I dont remember R Mears but went to games with D Devoe as coach through the Pearl era.

I do understand the overzealous love that some fans have with what he brought to our program but that emotional connection will fade away in time. I dont understand the hate and constant berating of our former coach.

He didn't "allow" them to do anything. He had no choice in the matter. He also kept lying and cheating, not doing all he could to keep job. Don't hate the man at all, just hate the way people look past facts in over the top blind adoration of the guy.

You must have missed Hat saying that the news stations send cameras down there every week. Bruce did this kind of work when he was coach... and he's doing it now. So just because he is nolonger our coach means he is doing this just for PR? That makes no sense. If this was the first time in 6 years of Bruce at Tn that he did volunteer/community work then I'd agree with you. But that's simply not the case.

He ought to be writing "Go Vols" considering UT is paying him $1 million when they were obligated to pay him nothing.
This ^ plus if he loves UT like he claims he does, he should contact Jones and Ware himself and ask them to honor their LOI.
