This is pure marketing.
His image is shot and he's mad at Hamilton.
So he does that, the fan base sighs and wishes he hadn't been fired, then the fan base turns on UT's Administration and support for Coach Zo is minimal.
Go away Bruce! Enjoyed while you were here but go away now!

oUTlive was probably a pr move too. Thought it would help with ncaa sanctions. :loco:

Everyone who is mocking him is in the wrong.

Bruce is staying in Knoxville, his wife is from here and is very happy here.

For those who are Christians on this board, pray that God will use this time and Bruce's mistakes to bring him to a place where he receives the grace that is offered freely.

For those who are not Christians, understand that he went down to serve with some friends who serve there and that no one did it for the publicity.

Steve Lavin was out of basketball by choice for 7 years. He could have gotten back in after 3. I believe that Bruce Pearl will be in broadcasting for 2 or 3 years, will not take an NBA job, will attend camps and tournaments and befriend 8th, 9th and 10th grade all stars who he will bring with him to his new job.

If this was the first time in 6 years of Bruce at Tn that he did volunteer/community work then I'd agree with you. But that's simply not the case.

You're right. Bruce has never been a fan of media attention. The man's just a humanitarian.

That wasn't the point Law. Noone is disputing Bruce loved the media...

Just funny how for 6 yrs as our coach, the guy does volunteer/community work and we love him.

He gets fired.. does volunteer/community work and we hate him.

I don't get it.

He could donate a chunk of that 1 mil buyout he shouldn't have to the shelter. That may help a bit more

How can you forget that Coach Pearl has already donated a lot of his income to charities? He spent his time helping others, while you spent your time criticizing him. I'm sorry that Coach Pearl felt he had to appear so perfect that he lied to coverup offering a few out of town guests a little hospitality in his home. That's dumb in my book; it's also easily forgiven.

Based on some checks I know he cut and events he hosted that went under the radar, I seriously doubt this was a PR move.

I'm not saying what he did was bad at all. However, I can see why some on here think that it was a PR stunt. I personally don't have any idea if it was or not.

In reponse to part of your post, Pearl's firing may and could very well be the means to that end. Sometimes it takes our humbling moments in life to bring about personal growth. Hope this is it for him and he does indeed receive grace he needs. Basketball is last thing he needs right now.

+1. The St. Jude hospital visit after the Memphis win was documented. However, if some of you had known what he has done for the kids there then you would get off the Pearl bashing.

It's one thing to not like the guy for what he put the program through. However, he has always and will always do a lot of charity work. That will never change.

Bruce was dumb as hell for doing what he did; however, he has done a lot of good in the community and a lot of it has gone "under the radar' as tigervol said. It's not like he just set this charity event up after he got fired. It was a previous engagement, and the slow news day allowed for it to become a big story.

As I stated earlier, I try to give benefit of doubt even though I may tend to agree with perception of it being PR. I would hope it wasn't. Also, as I said earlier, I applaud anyone who volunteers for a good cause. My issue is with the way so many people use this instance to try to make him out to be a hero. This was seen a lot in the board on KNS article

Good to know, thanks for posting. I see it differently now

Sure you do. Some people love to hate in general. Others, like a few choice posters in this forum, never liked him and see the fruition of his transgressions as some sort of affirmation of their past opinions of him. As though they knew about him and everyone else didn't.

Too bad he lied over a petty little secondary violation. He put the university in a difficult position and they had no choice but to fire him. Lets hope some of these coaches that committed more severe violations are punished at least as bad as Bruce has been.

You're right. Not meaning to criticize him at all. Not my intention though it seems to come off like that. Read all my posts on the subject, not meaning to sound critical or like a jerk. My bad.

I don't think I've ever left any doubt that I detest Bruce Pearl. That said, I have no reason, based on other things he's quietly done in the community, that his actions last night were anything but genuine.

Of course, many of the same posters who will rush to this thread to deify Pearl are the same folks who mocked John Calipari, who has given more money to charitable causes than Bruce Pearl has made in his lifetime, raising a million dollars for Haitian erathquake relief as a publicity stunt.

Maybe Lost Sheep Ministry let the media know BP was going to be there to increase publicity/money for their cause. We have no idea if it was Bruce or not. It would have gotten coverage whether he let it out or not. He gets the benefit of the doubt with me based on his past history of giving and charitable works.

I see no reason for him to do a PR stunt at this point. He is not going to get a job in basketball until the sanctions from the NCAA are resolved. He will very likely get an ESPN job for the next couple of years. I'm very unhappy with his actions that resulted in his being fired and the damage that was done to the basketball program, but see no reason to bash the man any further, especially for this type of community activity.

Regardless of the mistake Bruce made, he still loved The University of Tennessee and gave it his all every game we played. He went out of his way to help not only the university, but the community as well. I just cant stand to see so called "fans" bash him for doing what he did. Yeah he made a mistake, but who hasn't? There's no reason for the negativity toward Bruce, he's still a Volunteer in heart and always will be.

While he may not want to work in the NBA, those sanctions would have no bearing on him working there. If he desires, he'll have a job in the NBA as an assistant next season

I don't see him having interest in the NBA. He fits college coaching and I expect him to stay at that level. ESPN will jump on the chance to hire him and he will do a good job for them. I truly hope he has learned a valuable life lesson from all this and will ultimately return to college coaching somewhere and have another opportunity at that level.

This is 100% true. Martin may eventually be a better coach for the program, but it is highly unlikely he could ever love UT has much as Bruce did and has big shoes to fill in the effort department
