Former Pearl Assistants struggling (split)

Did that guy really claim his family was 'split apart' bc his daughter, a 4th year UT student, doesn't live at home anymore?

Bruce should have helped these guys out, especially if that $1 million buyout was tax free (which I think it was)

It's just the right thing to do especially when families have kids in schools and mortgages to pay

Apparently no one on the staff knew the right thing to do or they wouldn't have lost their jobs.

I do not feel sorry for these guys at all. They worked with Pearl many years. They knew they were breaking rules and yet they never made any attempts to move on to other jobs where they weren't at risk. They made their choices, now they have to live with them. Where were their thoughts for their children and their mortgages when they knew they were committing offenses that could cause them to lose their jobs? I guess you only worry about those things when you're trying to drum up sympathy. Pathetic IMHO.

The notion that Bruce should be obligated in any way to help them out is mononic and shows a real disconnect from reality.

I don't expect anyone but me and the wife to provide for our faimly, any man worth his salt should do the same.

They should have managed their money better it sounds.

This thread was good discussion for about 3 pages. It derailed long ago.

what makes one a "Pearlophile or a Fulmerite".? im not being an ass, but I have seen those terms thrown around alot and Im not sure what puts you in the running for those monikers.

I'm sure it depends on who you ask, but to me, a Pearlophile or a Fulmerite is someone who can't let go of the past and realize that because of actions from said coaches we are better off because they are gone. Basically, Pearlophiles can't seem to accept that Bruce was fired for lying to the NCAA which is a major violation and could have put UT in major sanctions. Instead they believe he was fired because he had some kids over to his house when he shouldn't have, which would have been a minor violation if he had admitted to it. They believe some vast NCAA conspiracy screwed Pearl and cannot accept the fact he screwed himself.

A Fulmerite is someone who ignores the statistics that show UT football was in a steady decline after the 2001 season. They think because Phil won a NC in '98, he should have had a lifetime job here. For some reason, they believe Fulmer WAS UT football and seem to forget about the General and his success. They love to bash Majors despite all he gave to the program as both a coach and player, while proclaiming Phil a saint for what he accomplished in the '90's.

Both Pearl and Fulmer brought some great moments to UT sports, and for that, I will always appreciate them. But they also had reached the end of their respective roads here at UT and it was time for them to go. Both UT football and basketball will go on without them. Both programs existed before their arrival, and both continue with their departures. Some people put more into the coaches than they do the team. This was never Fulmer University or Pearl State. We've always been the University of Tennessee and we will remain the University of Tennessee no matter who are damn coaches are.

You can not even answer the simple question "What is UT basketball."

UT basketball is every player who has ever poured his blood, sweat and tears out for the Orange & White. From Paul Walther to Tom Boerwinkle to Ernie and Bernie to Dale Ellis to Allan Houston all the way up to Tobias Harris. It isn't Bruce Pearl. I enjoyed the success Pearl had here but he did not create UT basketball.

In 1916, we went 16-0. Our only undefeated team in basketball. Regular season conference champions in 1936, 1941, 1943, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 2000, and 2008. SEC tournament champs in 1936, 1941, 1943, and 1979. I could go on but I'm just pulling these stats from wiki so if you're truly interested, look it up yourself.

My question to you would be, are you a fan of UT or are you a fan of Bruce Pearl? If you were a fan of Pearl, fine, but he no longer coaches here. In fact, because of his own actions, he can't coach at any NCAA member school for 3 years. If you're a fan of UT, then accept our previous successful coach got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and tried to lie his way out of it. He got himself in trouble and almost drug us down with him. Now we move on.

NYYVol, you and me aren't really that different. We're both die hard UT fans we just have differing opinions. I'm sorry I've insulted you and been a general a-hole.

It's alright, bro. I apologize too. Name calling is juvenile and there was no reason for us to go there. You have your opinion and I have mine. It's all cool. We probably shouldn't have hijacked the thread like we did.

Oh you guys! I'm sorry too. Let's all hug it out and let this thread get back to normal. Group hug! Yay!

And thus ends the damn pissing match. :hi:

Agree with pretty much what was said a couple posts back. But tell me where the disconnect is. Is it from constant threads and posts by people who "wish" BP was still around and won't move forward? Because I see few, if any, of those.
Or is the issue with the same clowns who create threads and posts rehashing **** from the past couple of years, then make up childish bs or turn to personal attacks when others have a different view.

Are there threads specifically titled "I wish Bruce Pearl was still here"? Of course there aren't. But the Pearlophiles do make snide comments about Martin and the recruits he's been put into a situation to recruit. Every thing that happenned with Pearl has left this program in a mess. Martin is fighting an uphill battle yet there are people who can't see this. They think that because Pearl was successful, Martin should be able to pick right back up. It's not going to happen. People are trying to say Martin has more to work with than Pearl did when he arrived. That's laughable. Martin had to give scholarships to low rated players just to fill out the roster. Look behind the curtains(cue a black curtain reference from someone), and you'll see the Pearlophiles still hanging around.

And the Pearl sharks aren't without their own blame. There are some who still like to chum the waters. But they are pretty blatant when compared to the Pearlophiles.

Neither side seems capable of finding common ground or of just letting it go. And the constant name calling, while at times amusing, is also growing old. Just stop taking the bait. Put each other on ignore and move on. Does it really matter who has the bigger cyber-penis?

Pearl wasn't ethical. It's that simple. It wasn't just one innocuous lie that "everyone tells" and the big, bad NCAA decided to unfairly punish him for; he deserves everything he's gotten and he brought it upon himself. As a result, he's gone, and it's Martin's team now. The sooner people realize this, the better off they'll be.

Too much? I equate it to "e-cred" in the recruiting forum. Everyone feels the need to come out on top. This site isn't about us, it's about UT.

Why is Bruce obligated to help these guys, more than he already has over the last 7+ years?
That's not what I asked. I don't give a crap about their sour grapes. They act like they had no idea and that's crap.

I'm not saying he's obligated. I'm saying Bruce Pearl has and always only looks out for #1. These guys worked hard for him for years, and you certainly didn't see him fighting for them to get a buyout. You didn't see him say, "You know what, Mike? Give me a $500k buyout and split the other $500k between my assistants." Nothing like that. Instead, he continues to live like a rock star while Shay is living at the poverty line. And, Bruce Pearl has been kind enough to not even speak to Shay anymore.

I'm saying that reflects Bruce Pearl's character, and if you can't see that, you're blind.

I think you should get your hands out of other peoples wallets.

Shays living in poverty? Ha. Hardly. According to the article he's enjoying life, watching 10 hours of football every week.

Bruce Pearl owes these bums as much as he owes you.

.

Oh, interesting. So, you determine if someone's living in poverty by the number of hours they spend watching college football. I would expect nothing but a dumbass response like this from you.

I definitely don't define it as someone who made six figures for over half a decade.

Umm....living in poverty is living without material needs or comforts. He has a TV. He spends all day watching football. He has a roof over his head and food on his table. His life might not be what it was, but he's not living in poverty.
