i mean if the kid has been in this much trouble already you'd only think more would have to come

Another thing...he is already on campus, so the whole he's still under mom and dad's supervision thing is not totally true.

I wasn't being sarcastic. All this yammering about discipline by dismissal reminds me of a great old saying:Any jackass can kick a barn down, it takes a carpenter to build one.

Last springs off the field incidents+5-6 with a LOSS to Vandy+ this years off the field incidents= no win situation with regression to the 10th power. (And I am no mathematician)

If indeed the magic dust exists, this is the time to use it.

Exactly, I've never heard of an 18 year old kid getting in a lot of trouble and then turning his life around. If anyone knows of any such cases could you point them out to me please? Dont waste too much of your day looking because it might take a long time to find any cases?

<unlike hat, I was being sarcastic>

People like lawgator think that the best thing for an 18-19 year old kid who does something stupid and immature is to be kicked out on their butt, education stripped away, and left to fend for themselves for these mistakes. I cant think of a better process for the kid growing than that, can you? Oh, well, there is the other possiblity of showing the kid tough love by punishing them, letting them know you dont expect this behavior to continue, and monitoring his behavior from that point on.

Again, why the extra chances for athletes??? A single drug violation on one's record, and they are no longer eligible for the Hope Scholarship. Yet, aggravated assault, DUI (for an underage Lee Smith,) etc. and fans of the team will scream for more chances.

Where did you see anything in my post about extra chances for athletes? I don't think they should be treated any different. You think a DUI gets you kicked out of college? Nope. The DUI situation is a little different in my opnion. I personally do not like the way DUI's are handled. There should be more punishment. Driving drunk puts so many peoples lives in danger and that is sometimes taken to lightly in my opnion. I would push for serious punishment, but certainly no benifits for being an athlete.

A simple real world fact: people with special talents get more opportunities. If the Hope Scholarship kids had a better 40 time, they could burn a blunt and get by with it. To those who don't have sufficient talent to warrant multiple chances, I will simply quote the the great Ted Knight: "The world needs ditch diggers, Danny."

You think any scholarship programs, other than athletic scholarships, keep paying the tuition of those who get arrested for DUI's?

I am not for kicking them out of college. I am for kicking them off the team and pulling the scholarship. If they can finance their own tuition (anyone can through student loans, btw) then they can proceed with their education.

A guy who runs a 4.5 40 can dig a ditch just as well as anybody else.

Why should Smith's punishment be any worse that Jim Bob Cooter's? If anything, Smith should probably get something lighter since he is wet behind the ears and Cooter is a Sr. who should know better.

It shouldn't, Jim Bob should be off the team as well.

Actually, most scholarships only have requirements related to GPA and attendance. I had three different scholarships as an undergrad. None of them required me to do anything other than make decent grades and stay enrolled. I had plenty of friends on various academic scholarships who ran afoul of the law. None had their funds cut.

I guess I will clarify my earlier post. I was concerning myself with full tuition scholarship programs. Most all full tuition programs I am aware of have conduct clauses.

Throwing a player off the team is easy. All the fugazi disciplinarians will praise you. Sticking with a kid through tough times and ignoring the media and fan blather requires real strength.
So true.I for one will admit I'm not perfect, neither are my children, they've hit a bump in the road. Now all are in college and continue on with life.HV you would probably make a good judge because you know people aren't perfect.Far from it.Everyone desreves a second chance unless it's murder, rape, etc.

The disciplinary action that will do Smith the most good, is as follows. Fulmer should kick him off the team. Another team will undoubtedly pick him up. However, he will lose the 2006 season, and he will have to finance his own education for this year. He will learn a valuable lesson. Lessons are not learned through slaps on the wrist.

During almost twenty years of crimedawging I have probably given more breaks than made arrests but in today's world police are admonished and sometimes prosecuted for giving such breaks. The old days are gone! But I pose this question...... What would your response be if Johnson, Smith or any other athelete been given a break? Would it be special treatment because of their status?

This also applied to tickets, the majority I wrote were actually written by the driver himself! Just wished I'd had the privledge of pulling over HV! What a conversation that would have been!

It would be an honor to cross paths with you, Crimedawg. My father was a Sheriff's Deputy. It's not the veteran law enforcement officers I take issue with. It's the overofficious, bigoted halfwits that are too often given badges now that I have little respect or use for.
