Bottom line is if Phil was the coach some on here make him out to be he would be coaching today somewhere. The fact that he is not speaks volumes and please don't bring up his age, Spurrier is older and Saban and Miles are within a year or two of Phil. I guess the coaching world must not feel that Phil has what it takes.

so in your world he couldnt have decided to take it to the house unless something came up. He couldnt have decided that he's caught the rabbit (coached at his alma mater and won a national championship) and has no desire to coach just for the sake of coaching. That spending time with his grandchild (child of former player Robert Peace) was more important than being hundreds of miles away and not seeing the child. That the amount of money any other school he was ever mentioned for (Ky, Kansas, etc.....) just didnt pay as much as his business in Knoxville.

Your lack of exploring all possible options for CPF speaks volumes

Those would all be valid points Greve if Phil had not expressed interest in returning to coaching by putting his name in for consideration. Those are facts and not speculation and it came from his own mouth so as I stated earlier apparently the rest of the college football world are not interested in a HOF coach with a 152-52 record and would rather take their chances with other coaches.

he never ruled anything out keeping his options open. Instead of saying "I'm not coaching ever again" only to have an offer that he couldnt refuse, he just said he'd listen to anything. Maybe the money wasnt right. Maybe it was too far to travel away from the state he grew up in. And maybe the school said he was too expensive. But drawing a conclusion that he isnt coaching because he sucks since he has no coaching job is very, very short sighted considering we have no idea the conversations between CPF and the schools.

No Gman. YOUNGER coaches.

You boys have gotten waaaaay off subject here. This thread is about why Phil is no longer the coach here, why he was fired and why no one else has even contacted him to coach again and how bad he ran the program into the ground!

I've read alot of your posts. It's obvious you don't like (I won't use hate) Coach Fulmer. Who is your all time favorite Tennessee coach? It's not a trick question, I just wonder as much as you dislike him, who was your favorite? It's not as if you are glad he's gone, why all the insults?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh, and be my hero, I've asked several times on here for the good things that have happened to the program since his firing. So far I have Kiffin beat GA and USCjr. (2) things since the dismissal.

And here it is: the obligatory obesity remark. Sad. HOF coach deserves better.

Crickets. Nothing good came of this. I take that back...we hired a YOUNGER coach. Applying VN logic, we should have an NC by now.

Disagree. Once the borders closed, we had LESS talent, not the same amount of talent. Fulmer's performance tracked his talent level, which is true of almost all coaches. Fulmer's recruiting performance exceeded almost all other coaches. Even when the borders closed, his recruiting poached enough talent to keep us a nationally-relevant good team, just no longer an elite nationally-dominant team like the first half of his tenure when the borders were more open. Fans came to expect elite performances (BCS-or-bust; SEC-title-or-bust) when we now get to see what an average coach with average recruiting ability looks like after his firing: 4 consecutive nationally irrelevant seasons.

If you think Derek Dooley is an average coach, then it's obvious that no one should give two seconds of thought to your opinions on football.

You are literally--like, not exaggerating, LITERALLY--the only person I've seen on here that brings up age as a factor. You act like everyone on VN didn't appreciate the golden oldie we had because we wanted some young hotshot, when the reality is that people were just tired of seeing really bad coaching.

I am not sure, because I do not know the demographics of VN, but I may be one of the few that understand it....or at least believe it to be the reason. But you do use an interesting phrase to describe him.

It's the exact opposite of that. Instead of saying "I'm coming back" and then looking really stupid when he gets zero offers, he just says that he's interested and talks up every position that comes open even though none of them are interested in him.

If you're leaning towards retirement barring some huge offer from Ohio State or something, you say you're learning toward retirement. Here is a list of things you don't say:

"I just don't think I'm finished," he said. "I'm a young guy. I've got great energy."
"I would think there would be some opportunities."
Phillip Fulmer plans to spend this football season working for an investment firm, doing some television work and even taking a few weekends off.

By next season, the former Tennessee coach expects to be back on the sideline and back in the spotlight.

"I have a great picture in mind," he said Monday of what he's hoping for in his next coaching job. "Somebody that's committed to winning championships and being the best that they can be."
“I made a significant point when I got out of coaching that I’m looking for a program that’s committed to winning and being the best they can be. Certainly South Florida fits that profile.
ON THE UK JOB: “My feeling on it would be they have great potential, being in the Southeastern Conference and obviously having just a great history in basketball.”

ON UK’S TALENT LEVEL: “I only had a chance to see them a bit last year so I didn’t know what to expect. I was quite impressed with them the couple of times I saw them early in games (this year). … I think there’s nothing but an upside for somebody.”

ON HIS INTEREST IN THE JOB: “That’s really not for me to say at this point. I haven’t had any conversations with anyone.”

etc. etc.

1.) You didn't put any dates on there regarding when these things were said.
2.) What's he going to say about the UK job if asked? "They're a ****hole of a team. I beat them 17 times in a row. There's no way in Hell I'll coach in that dog**** place."? Sorry, but he has more class than that.
3.) After seeing how nice it is getting weekends off, seeing all the kids and grandkids he's not allowed to change his mind? He's been getting paid for 4 years now, maybe he's enjoyed the life he has.

Can you show me where he said he doesn't want to coach anymore and is leaning towards retirement?

No more than you can show he really wants back in. That's the point. You don't know, but insist on saying "nobody wants Phil cause he's terrible" blah blah blah. People's priorities change, they get used to something, etc.

Fact: Fulmer said himself that he wanted back in, even singling out specific jobs to say they fit what he wants.

Fact: He obviously didn't get back in.

Do you have a single shred of evidence that it's because he changed his mind, or are you just bending over backwards to make excuses for Fulmer?

Just think, if we hadn't gotten rid of ole' Phil when we did, we'd be even more years behind straightening out and rebuilding the program!

He said he's interested. Hell, I was interested in being the starting first baseman for the Cardinals after Pujols left. Doesn't mean I really wanted it at this point in my life, doesn't mean I would've taken it, etc. Or a better situation was I went and talked to people for a job I was interested in. Was even offered the job. Turned it down because it wasn't a perfect fit. I'm interested in moving to DC or someplace, but my family is here, so that may not happen. So, yeah, I'll give the man who gave so much of his life to the one place he REALLY wants to be a break.

There's no way you can prove that. You're just thinking if he had this mess that is the result of all the actions taken after his firing. Those wouldn't have happened if Fulmer hadn't been fired. Useless argument.

So, basically, you're all about proof until I ask you to provide some. Not all that surprising.

Also, it's common knowledge that he tried to get the Louisville job and got passed over. But then again, you've backed yourself so far into a corner that he would literally have to say "I desperately want them to offer me this job" before you would admit to what everyone else already knows.
