Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

He was great.

He got lazy.

He got fired.

We had a crappy AD.

Crappy AD made a bad hire.

Bad hire left after a year.

Crappy AD made the worst hire possible.

Crappy AD and worst coach ever are both fired.

The end...

Phil deserved to be fired. The AD hired two crappy coaches. But Phil still deserved to go.

I love 99% of your posts, Wylo, but I totally disagree with you in this thread. Phil played the eventual national champion in every SECCG game of the noughties, and we came up just short (and very unlucky in one).

I would do anything to be back in a position to know that we were competing for the SECCG every year.

Dooley had a team that should have done it this year. He was absolutely the worst hire possible, but we let Hambone make all of those decisions.

Hambone.

the moron hamilton should have been fired on the same day as fulmer. he set the program back 10 years with all his mistakes.

A-friggin-men. Oh, he had a plan but the problem was he bought the whole case of snake oil from the salesman. A coach who sucked in the NFL and was never a coordinator in the college ranks. But he sold Hammy hook, line, sinker. And we are the ones suffereing.

First off, thank you.

But I disagree back with you. Lol.

Fulmer was behind Saban, Miles, Spurrier, And Richt at the end. He was getting passed by. He wouldn't change his ways. He wouldn't bring in top assistants because he feared for his on job. He knew Chavis wouldn't take the UT job, but bringing in the Clawfense was horrible.

He was not righting the ship. He had lost his foothold in the SEC.

He was better than Dooley, but that is it. Hamilton should have hired a good coach the first time instead of an unproven name.

I would rather have Fulmer over the last two coaches. But that isn't saying much at all.

And that's a shame on the big boosters. They are businessman and CEOs. I don't think they were completely sold on Lane, but when you fire your coach midseason, there is nothing you can do

I agree but acting like we had a master plan was fools gold and it cost us. We shoulda never fired him mid season. He deserved after the season announcement.

I can get behind this. The lack of a plan by Hamilton cost us dearly.

Unfortunately it appears that we are doomed for this ride again with our new coach.

It was a rushed panic after Hart blew it so publicly.

I think we were both all-in on Gruden. I truly believe Gruden was the only true homerun hire at Tennessee.

If "the process" was the gawd-awful Kiffin-Dooley era for Gruden, so be it.

I looked at CBJ through Gruden-tinged glasses, and I wasn't happy. I will say though, CBJ appears to be the anti-Dooley, and I can appreciate that.

I just hope it translates into wins. If not, then I still regret what we did to Fulmer. Phil isn't Saban. He's not Spurrier at Florida (I personally think Phil was unlucky with Crompdaddy vs USCe).

Who is Saban though? (well, the Grude, obviously)

But Phil was all-Vol, and our second greatest coach of all-time.

I'm a Fulmer guy over Johnny. It was his time to go,too...

We got lucky with Phil when Johnny got canned. It could have easily gone south on Dickey just like it did when Hammy cut Phil. Promoted a coordinator with no HC experience and the only experience was in a no-lose situation.

Dooley got axed

Upon further review by my staff, this has been denied, because for Dooley to get axed, Tenn would have had to have a bad year. Sorry Grevehaller. As bad as coach as some on here would like to believe, you mean to tell me that us winning a couple of games is the only good things to come out of the firing of CPF?

Hey Gruden nuthuggers, you ever stop to think the treatment that CPF got (getting fired in mid-season) after a couple of bad years may have played a part in all of the "big name" coaches telling us no?

HMMMMMMMMMM

his request was "some good things that have happened since the firing of CPF". Personally, I think Mr Dooley getting a pink slip was a good thing as he wasnt contributing to the betterment of our program.

Ok. Gotta give you that one due to the question being asked wrong, and you'll pick a category first in the "Double Jeopardy" round, right after you listen to .............this.

So, if you were a Penn State fan, you'd think Paterno should've been fired in 1988 when he went 5-6. Or in 1984 when he went 6-5. Or 2000 when he went 5-7. Right?[/QU The difference is Joe Pa was PSU football! He built that program from absolutely nothing (unlike Phil) and had many many more successful seasons than Phil; And won more big time and big rivalry games than Phil. So, no, they did the right thing at the time by not moving him out!
